A Ukrainian mortar battery provides cover for their infantry on the front line in eastern Ukraine. They fire dozens of shells per day, including some captured from Russian forces. They aim at targets up to 7 kilometers away, the maximum range, as longer-range Russian artillery hits back at them.

To be fair, Ukraine has been plagued by oligarchs too, e.g. George Soros since the independence of Ukraine back in 1991 (If I recall correctly, perhaps may be 1989). George Soros created his foundation since Ukraine regained its freedoms, but are we seriously going to consider George Soros a philanthropist? Lmao (I am against the war btw.)

There is much irony in your statement. The only reason Ukraine isn't getting weapons and equipment to the front lines is because of their oligarchs.

Being on the heavy mortar team is the most scary job I can imagine. You're only JUST far enough away to avoid direct fire, but any blitz advance from the enemy and you could be staring down the barrel of a tank real quick if there's even the smallest communication or detection error. Secondly you are, by necessity, always within range of heavy artillery. Even the (slightly inferior) Russian 152mm are automatically within range of you even if they cannot reach their western 155mm counter-parts who generally hang back as far as they can (for this reason). TL;DR: These guys have big heavy brass nuts! I'm a retired artilleryman of the Danish army, so I know what I'm talking about.

dont you shoot and scoot method? I am sure you still do and run into the issue u are mentioning. When i was a younger guy, i always thought this was a dumb a useless job for untrained soldiers. Boy has my learning changed on war... But is it supposed to recoil like that? Wouldnt they have to re adjust say to hit same target?
@andersjjensen
@andersjjensen Жыл бұрын
@@SandorSoptei When firing max range heavy mortars do jump around quite a bit. In the clip you see him adjust the sights to the autocollimator (which is fixed). It's not perfect, as you ideally need a three point calibration whenever you've moved, but at 8km distance, and when "blind firing" like this to provide "keep your heads down motherfucker!" fire support for advancing troops it's not that big of a deal. They just want the enemy to take cover in their roofed shelters rather than staff the trenches. As for shoot and scoot: Normally you would. But if the enemy has no artillery radar, or has so poor artillery accuracy that it doesn't matter, then I guess living dangerously in return for continuous fire support is a valid trade-off.

Can you tell us a bit about if a shell like this lands 30m-50m next to someone does he survive ??
@andersjjensen
@andersjjensen Жыл бұрын
@@KKKKKKK-sr1fz If I recall correctly the expected incapacitation diameter for a person standing upright in an open field is 25m for 120mm mortars set to impact detonate. For air bursts it's wider than that, but getting the timing on those correct is hard. For 155mm standard HE shells it's around 50m. Incapacitation does not equal death... unless your medic team is incompetent or neglecting.

American 120 bipods have a buffer on the cannon collar that absorbs some of the force from the blast and keeps the system stable. If the buffer ceases functioning the mortar will 'jump' like the one in this video. I can see a buffer on this one (the small cylinders running parallel to the cannon tube in front of it). I speculate that this mortar has a malfunctioning buffer system and the soldiers are operating it anyway. I wouldn't recommend it but I'm not fighting a war.

During the last great hate-fest in the '40s on these Ukrainian fields facing the Russians, we called our mortar platoons Zigeuner Artillerie (gypsy artillery) because they were wanderers just like us infantry. And this was also a joke, given the small size and relative weakness of mortars in comparison to the regular artillery.

The Ukrainian Forces must be the worlds mpst effective air delivery postal service. All the ammunition the -retreati...- fleeing Russians left as a -gesture of goodwill- is now being *returned to the Russians with highest accuracy.* These mortar teams, they are far closer to their opposition than their adversary RU howitzers. Every time they fire they know return fire shells are coming back on their position in a few minutes. Brave guys! *Slava Ukraini! - Heroyam Slava!* - Stay safe!

Fortunately Russia has lost almost all of their artillery radar capabilities. Otherwise these guys would be minced meat unless they ran "shoot and scoot" constantly. That they can set up shop and just start pounding is direct proof that Russia is being rammed in the rear. That the Russian counter battery fire is so inaccurate that they just take cover and wait for it to pass, yet keep using the same position, is just further testament that the Russian army is amateurish and under equipped. Back in the 90s and 2000s I manned an M109A1 155mm self propelled howitzer in the Danish army. This was before drones and GPS guided shells. If we had gone up against someone with a heavy mortar system they would have been borscht within the first 10 minutes after obs had a general idea of their location. That being said: These guys have nuts the size of wrecking balls (and about as heavy). They must trust their front line friends completely. One drone getting through to spot their precise location is all it takes for all of them to die (assuming the Russians can hit +/- 25m first try).

@@andersjjensen Would the artillery radar be positioned somewhat to the rear? Could we suspect high precision rockets from HIMARS to have been responsible for taking them out when discovered? Thanks, it was interesresting to hear your personal experience.
@andersjjensen
@andersjjensen Жыл бұрын
@@larsrons7937 Artillery radar can be positioned fairly rearward, as they only need to observe the shell (or rocket) at the top of the arc to be able to tell the point of origin. This makes them hard to visually spot. But Russia didn't have particularly many to begin with, as radar tech is expensive as hell and doesn't look impressive on parades. However, artillery radar are easily observable by the western AWACS planes which "just happens to be on patrol in Poland". So yes, GMLRS rockets have, or whatever else happened to have the required range and precision will have taken them out as soon as they were detected. AGM-88 HARM is another option, as those are specifically designed to home in on anything that emits radar waves, but these have only "come online" recently, and they're fired from fighter jets, so they are primarily held back for anti-AA ("anti-anti-aircraft" sounds funny!) systems. But theoretically they can be readily deployed against artillery radar if the need is pressing.
@larsrons7937
@larsrons7937 Жыл бұрын
@@andersjjensen Thanks for a good clarification. Very fortunate that we have those AWACS planes flying around, Putin must be annoyed he can't touch them. And I guess the Russians lack anti-anti-anti-aircraft capabilities to counter the HARMs, so they are having a bad day again-again-again.

Can anyone share what the purpose of the rope around the tailshaft is... Is it the propellant charge? Is it a field-modification? I haven't a clue how mortars work, but wouldn't it help to weigh down that mortar plate with a few stones to stop it from flying up like that when firing? Maybe then they wouldn't need to keep re-adjusting the mortar every time and could fire more often.

@nbrain1595

yea but it would also put a lot more stress on the mortar itself, since the bounce actually releases a lot of the energy. and dont forget that they regularly have to reposition quickly to avoid counterfire or reach new positions. to actually stop the bounce they would have to use really serious weight since its straight up powered by serious explosions, so maybe not feasable even if technicly possible? (just my 2 cents from an amateur engineering perspective)

Oftentimes you have a soldier or two holding onto the base. On top of that, they will flatten the ground and pack it in so there isn't as much deformation. Once that dish at the base digs into the ground, it jumps less. I'm assuming the reason they aren't doing all that is either because they have to keep pushing forward with the infantry, they're afraid of counter battery (extensive on both sides), or they feel that the concentration of Russian forces in their target location is saturated enough it doesn't matter.
