I have a disagreement with a comment you made in your video. You indicated that you are not a filmmaker, or hope to be one. Well I watched your entire series from Ellesmere Island chasing the White Wolf. If that production of yours doesn't count as a documentary film then nothing does. I have spent the better part of 20-years producing outdoor related stories which have aired on TV networks here in Canada your work certainly meets and I would say exceeds what would be acceptable for main-stream media outlets. I wish nothing but continued success in your outdoor adventures, I for one will be looking forward to your next documentary film. Cheers from Alberta, Canada.

Nice one Morten. Often I find when leading tours people aren't used to the weight of their bags on hikes and it certainly is an important part of wildlife photography, to be comfortable with your gear when lugging it around. Nothing knocks creativity down like feeling totally exhausted! In regard to the macro, might be worth waiting for the Z mount 60mm or 105mm S, but the 105mm Nikon VR is very good indeed! Cheers, Tom

Hey Morten! I'm sure you've considered something like this already, or mentioned in a previous video but I'm a fairly new subscriber so I might've missed it, but as someone who does a lot of camping I'd say a sleeping bag compression sack would be really useful in shrinking your winter bag down to condense the size of your backpack. I've got a Marmot winter sleeping bag that's around the same size as yours but it has a compression sack that makes it about the size of a football. Someone else may have mentioned this in a comment below or in person, and you might have a reason for not using one, but I've always found them to be really helpful and you mentioned being excited about using your smaller spring bag so I thought I'd mention it!

Hi Morten. I have the Fstop Shinn. The big one. My bag is around 14-15kg. When I've been to Vanuatu I was carrying like 20-25kg because of extra water and some extra gear of mine and from my wife. Then when I went back to the 14-15kg it felt soooooo light. I agree 100% with you for getting stronger when carrying some weight around for "nothing". (Fitting a mavic2pro combo + nikond750 Tamron 150-600 sigma 24-105 samyang 14mm and sigma 85mm + tripod. Plus extra gear like Camo clothes and batteries, water and stuff).

I must say I agree with the gentleman below my comment, your film making is very good and also the story telling and I do agree references getting used to carrying a heavy back pack so you body gets used to the weight, I my self quite often carry climbing gear, summer/ winter and my camera gear.

Went backpacking for the first time last year. Always a hiker and a camper but never put them together. Then I decided Camper meets photographer on a hike. "how will I get my camera gear involved?" Everyone thought I was crazy. Because I didn't have backpacking gear I had the opportunity to gear up light. This year's trip was postponed/cancelled because of the madness. I do think lots of practice hikes were important and going out showed me what I truly would use.

Your backpack seemed almost bottomless as you kept pulling stuff out of there 😂 You are also the only person I know who has an axe in their photobag 😉 I already struggle with what you call a "small photobag", which only has a Tamron 150-600 and a macro lens (and camera). Thank you! I just found your video and it reinforced lessons I'm learning as I pursue my outdoor photography. This is what makes you stand out as an exceptional film maker and photographer. The back ground planning and concerns in probably most of our minds you address and provide fantastic advice. This couldn't have come at a better time for me as I was getting concerned on how I could manage my kit for a mountain wildlife trip. Looks like I will be overloading my bag form now on to get in training. could you cover I you next bag video the start adjustments for wearing such a heavy pack. Should be worn high , low and what strap should be pulled tight to get maximum comfort. This would be truly helpful. I was panicking at around 15-18kg, 35KG the previous comment was correct in that the soldier is still in you. Keep up the fantastic work

For the replacement of your macro lens ; heard a lot of good things about the latest Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD (what a name!). Sounds very good and Tamron have a lot of experience with macro lenses 👍 (great video thought, find your work very inspiring as a “wanna be” nature photographer 😊)

@@MortenHilmer I use the Tamron 90mm SP f/2.8 (Model F017) on my D500 and it's fantastic. Ridiculously sharp, even wide open. If I lived someplace like you do, I would definitely do the same, because there could be those days when you go out for just a day trip, but decide you want to stay longer, you are prepared and don't have to worry about things! did a lot backpacking and hiking/climbing in the past. trying never go over 25kg on shoulders. i think it is not only about muscle strength, in my opinion knees and back is not training well that way it should be very traumatic for bindings in the long run. but hope i am wrong. thanks for the video, it is more clear now why you are caring so many things )

As always awesome... you should buy nikkor 105mm f2.8 macro g lens. Best for Nikon. Try Nikon 200mm f4 macro. It's a manual lens, little heavy, gives good distance between subject and you.

With my back I cannot carry more than half what you have…ok, the Macro lens I suggest (I have gone through two of them) is the Tamron SP 90mm 2.8, incredible lens and not expensive. I’m sure they have a Z version or adapter for it - I have the F version and have adapters for Sony E and now Fuji GFX. Cheers and be safe…

I use a Tamron 90mm Macro f4 I believe, I have it with a nikon mount, not sure If they have a Z mount version yet. But great lens, light weight, and good quality

I dont think they do yet. I use mine with the z6 and ftz adapter and works great since I dont need the autofocus. It works but just sounds like it will fry the lens motor sonic dont use it

Wow, and I thought I carried a heavy photography pack! In regard to macro lenses - I'm using the Laowa 100mm 2:1 macro lens with my Z6 right now. It's a great lens, but is completely manual with no autofocus or image stabilization.

Excellent video. Even though I shoot primarily with a video camcorder (Canon XF-705) I am always learning something from your great "Behind the Scenes" videos. I like the way you pack it all in. Several years ago I started to compile a list of every piece of video/camera equipment I own, including cables, batteries, chargers, power adapters, flashlights, audio equipment, you name it. So now, whenever I go on a trip I take out my list and go through it as I pack my bag according to my needs for that trip. Do you ever use such a list? Bob

Take a look at Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO. AFAIK it's the only macro lens made for the Z Nikon line. It looks great and it's not expensive, the only drawback is it's not an autofocusing lens.

Morten, I recently discovered your videos after following you on IG. I created a youtube account just to subscribe to your channel. I am truly inspired by your work and your passion. I watch your videos up on the second monitor while I edit photos. I go on long photo hikes here in Idaho USA. I agree most camera bags are not designed for hiking. I use a similar hiking bag (Deuter ACT lite Much less expensive) I use a heavy NIKON 200-400 f4 and only one extra camera and lense for landscape. However, like you, I pack all the other essentials on every trip long or short. (45lb or 20kg max) When friends join me on a hike they question my sanity to carry so much gear on even short trips. Hell, I question it myself sometimes. Keep up the good work my friend. Let me know if you ever want to explore Idaho. We'd be happy to house you and show you around the wilderness. Keep those videos coming. I'm still catching up on old ones. Great content. Thank you for letting us join you on your adventures.
