Fun fact for anyone who doesn't know, you can skip the vast majority of the gauntlet by just casting knock on the final door. Sure you'll lose out on all the loot in there if you go through without collecting it but if you're just wanting to get through it'll save you quite a bit of time.

I remember Oblivion well, it being one of the biggest disappointments of all-time for me. Straight from Morrowind, I couldn't wait to play the next title in the series that had a massive graphical leap and a huge world to explore. The moment where you get out of the sewer is easily the top part of the game. And then... everything just goes downhill. Exploration is useless now, because ALL loot is both random and level-scaled, so your progression is going to be completely linear. All dungeons are extremely repetitive and, because of the previous point, it doesn't matter which one you go into. Level-up is actually a bad idea after some point, because it makes the world stronger and you stay pretty much the same. Main Quest is the worst of the series by far. The world is generic beyond belief. What a massive downgrade after the mushroom kingdom of Morrowind. Quests, while some of them are the best TES has ever seen, are just a mindless checklist. You can do everything, and you will. Switch off brain and go to the next marker. All the fun spells are now removed, great. I get why people love Skyrim, I get why people love Morrowind, and hell, I get why people love Daggerfall. They are all flawed, but have their upsides: Skyrim is the easiest to get into, Morrowind is the most imaginative and immersive, Daggerfall is the most ambitious. When it comes to Oblivion, I really don't see it.

One thing that really grinds my gears in a lot of more open world games (BG3, Skyrim, Project Zomboid, etc) is the amount of useless clutter loot to sift through while exploring. In BG3, the majority of good stuff is going to be in a fancy chest, on the body of a powerful enemy, or in a shopkeeper's inventory, but you're still conditioned to check everything and everywhere because every once in a while, you'll find a really useful item on some random skeleton you find in the wilderness. There's a fine line between realism/environmental storytelling and tedium.
@OrangeNash
@OrangeNash 9 ай бұрын
That whole trope/cliche has become really tiresome. After 30 years of playing games with this in, I'm really wondering why the poor locals haven't collected the gold from the dead wolves? Why don't bandits pick up loot from dead bodies? Actually, robbers and bandits are even worse as they don't ever actually rob anyone, they just have their own loot! I understand people like collecting loot and we do need it to reward exploration. But it's a matter of balance and there's just too much of it literally lying around. It is immersion breaking in open so-called "worlds" invariably with these huge problems, poverty, war, yet the locals just leave heaps of valuables littered around. Designers should have come up with something a bit more immersive by now. In RDRD2, I was so amazed when, coming back to collect a pelt off a deer I'd shot earlier, a pack of wolves were scavanging the carcass. So it can be done if designers try.

I'm with you on "the flip" in Jagged Alliance 3. After my 2nd playthrough I downloaded a mod that lets me shift my militias between sectors and it became a MUCH more rewarding experience. Instead of all my well-trained militia getting smoked off screen by the plot, I was able to reinforce my mines, Flea Town and Port Cacao and then immediately begin counter attacks and reclaiming lost mines. It made me angry that they would just completely reset your clock by crushing your militia with Army units and forcing you to revisit almost the entire map. Great game though.

I didn't hate a single thing in Baldur's Gate 3, up until Lady Jannath's estate. Before it was fixed, I had to brute force it due to Volo's eye operation just breaking the whole thing, it took me over an hour but because I triggered combat on entry so I didn't even get to talk to anyone to figure out what to do! To your point I could definitely see the gauntlet of Shar getting old after multiple times, but Lady Jannath's Estate, even after numerous patches still makes me angry just thinking about it.

Wrath of the Righteous has two of them for me. The first is that every single npc tells you their life story from the moment that they meet you. The second is that by the time you fight your 47th group of succubi and incubi (or... well, pick any enemy in the game since encounters are just copy-pasted a few dozen times each) you're done with it and just ready to move on.

This might be too non-specific- but my least favourite part of most my favourite games is just when they don’t balance the difficulty well enough. So many games seem to balanced around making the game possible to complete for any player, regardless of whether they’re engaging with the systems, equipment or side quests. So on repeat playthroughs of games you love the systems of, you’re almost encouraged not to use them because otherwise you ‘break’ the game and make it way too easy. Just for making use of the tools the devs gave you. Infinite Wealth is a great example of this, as you touched on in your 100% review.

The Gauntlet of Shar is probably the most baffling design decision that Larian made in BG3. I know that they´re fond of their more puzzle-y, trap filled areas that reward paying attention, reading clues etc. But those areas are usually optional. (like in D:OS2) To create this forced funnel that all playthroughs need to go through with no alternative really sticks out in a game like BG3 that is usually very supportive of player freedom.

Oblivion's leveling has always been one of those really fascinating cases to me of how a few small changes can completely shatter an otherwise semi-understandable system. Like, say what you will about the system overall, but in Morrowind, it's relatively intuitive. You buy training from NPCs and skill increases improve the stat boosts you get when leveling up. There isn't a limit to how many training sessions you can have, so you're free to spend your gold on training sessions in-between adventures. Ideally, you're using your class skills during actual gameplay, so training your non-class skills is both cheaper and makes more sense. And on top of that, training makes time pass in-world, which makes the game feel much longer in scope. Training sessions aren't just a pointless inclusion; they're a mechanic that you're generally expected to take advantage of throughout the game. Oblivion completely screws this up by adding a hard cap of 5 training sessions per-level, which means you *have* to actively use non-class skills in order to get better stat boosts. By doing so, not only does it kneecap a core component of the leveling system, it takes an intentional mechanic and turns it into an actually-pointless mechanic. But the level-scaling was built and designed around the expectation that you'll be training non-class skills and getting decent stat boosts... and thus, everything falls apart.

My first playthrough of Oblivion I foolishly chose the skills that I planned on using a lot on my character for my main skills. I ended up leveling up too fast. If I recall, leveling up major skills caused your character to increase in level, but the minor skills you increased during the previous level determined what ability scores you could improve. The leveled enemies increase in strength, hit points, etc, and if you didn’t carefully manage the skills you increased during the leveling process, you were totally outclassed by the enemies in later levels. Years later I finished the game by unintuitively picking as major skills things like armorer that you could perform in a controlled manner and that would not increase as you played the game. So I would have to keep track of what minor skills I leveled and then spend a half hour or more repairing armor when it was time to level up. Not the most fun.

It's fine for the first playthrough but it gets tiring having to collect all the basic items and equipment at the start of the game, which takes unnecessarily long due to the size of a world that's mainly filled with repetitive "find the lever then fight the boss" dungeons. Shars gauntlet isn’t bad, all you have to do is solve the invisible puzzle, crush balthazaar and the demon, and use that purple gem to get to the next section, and cast knock for the final door. All you miss out on is a crit ring, and the rat’s armor.

Completely different game genre, but the Batmobile portions in Arkham Knight. They weren't actually that bad, but they really crammed a lot of it in the game and it just broke the experience that previous games had built. They felt like they didn't belong. Just always the first example that comes to mind. While I'm more okay with Rogue Trader than considering it a favorite game, the endless amount of combat in it comes to mind. Each encounter just takes so much time, even when doing the Argenta sniper approach, a lot of them don't pose genuinely threats and they just.... Drag... The... Pace... Down... So... Much. Finally Dragon Age 2, the third Act. I still like it, but you can just feel the rush there and it leads to some really horrid plot beats that even the devs admitted was because they just had to get something there. I feel anyone who has played that game knows exactly what boss fight I am thinking about especially.

I had opposite journey with batmobile. I hated it at the start, but over time, after learing combat and instaling uprgades ( especialy upgrades, starting batmobile is stupidly underpowered ), I started to really enjoy it. Yes, tank battles can be super hectic and chaotic, but beating 40-1 fights without scratch is amazing feeling.

@@ComissarYarrick I can honestly see that point of view as well as I do think that the Batmobile segment is generally well done, especially after the start. It just, for me, was such a massively different mechanistic choice and the puzzles especially with it were... Sigh. But completely agreed on some of the massive fights, especially that last stand at the GCPD. Quick high five about reminiscing about the greatness of the Arkham Trilogy.

2nd half of Vampire the Masquerade - Redemption in modern times. shortly before 2000. On paper it's nice (anyone remember fear of 2000s?), but playing feels weak - most weapons were awful, pacing sucked and content in general was not great. Black Mountain mines in Arcanum - boring dungeon crawling and lot of traps with some equipement damaging garbage on top
@burningsheep4473
@burningsheep4473 9 ай бұрын
I did never get to the second half of Redemption as the Tremere area and my stupid, stupid, wasteful AI companions had already used up my patience at that point. But the soundtrack for the first half is much, much better in my opinion. I don't mind the BMM too much. The traps can mostly be tanked and I like it in terms of encounters and overall storytelling. Other areas like that are less interesting and often still pretty grindy. But the combat in most of the game is simply easier to handle when you don't have to worry about your equipment breaking and not having to bother with a big party. My first playthrough with a pretty basic melee character was probably the easiest and simplest so far.

Beyond what it does to enemies, the level scaling in Oblivion also fucks up a lot of the gear. I’m thinking specifically stuff like Daedric quest rewards, which should be epic legendary items, but can have shit stats on them (the actual values) if you do the quests at too low of a level.

I've thoroughly enjoyed Expeditions: Viking, and was super excited for Rome - a more polished title, improving from previous game, set in a setting I personally enjoy more.. The opening chapters were great, until a point I was forced into doing side missions using only the underlings. I was so put off by Rome's design choice and the fact those side missions were mandatory to clear the area/put it under your control. And while I really enjoyed customising and optimizing 'core' 4 or so characters, being forced to use more of them was such a slog and turn off, that I actually dropped the title I was super hyped to play. I'm still salty I'm missing out on a potentially amazing game, but I just cant slog through it. ^^

Gauntlet of Shar is where I gave up in BG3, didn't finish. My least favorite slogs in games I love would would be parts of Alushinyrra (WOTR), The Bridge Ablaze / Drowned Kingdom in Deadfire DLC, first 3 levels of Dragon's Eye in IWD, and the starting tour of the College of Winterhold in Skyrim only because I've done it a million times! I don't hate Blackreach as much anymore because I know how to get through it fast. Also the entirety of Kingmaker after beating Stag Lord... I just find most of that game to be a slog, a lot less fun that WOTR.

It will satisfy one style of play, but I think it's more of a pointed irritation than an interesting plot point. I'm not a fan of level scaling in general (in any game)...for me it just comes down to the question: Why should enemies that are low level scale with my level? What I want to see is my progression from lvl 1 to a powerhouse towards the end of the game, but if I have a random mook scale with me, then that progression becomes quite disappointing when I can't one shot enemies I struggled against in the early game. Some might say that it's just so that the game can be challenging when you become too powerful, but I would prefer devs focus on end game content and actually THINK of enemies that can be challenging to a maxed out character... not go for shortcuts like level scaling to pump up game difficulty.

Xcom EU: Randomness of events and panic level. Why in a tactical and stratigic game i have to handle this and i can't plan anything that involve base development and missions management? I hate when a game create a false sense of urgency. Bayonetta: Boss battles. In a game with a complex combat system with a complex combo system, you can't use any of this great systems in boss battles, because boss battles are not designed in a way that takes advantages of the combat system. Boss battles are the worst part of the game. Fallout 4: Minutemen faction. Is simply boring. Also the nuka world dlc is a complete waste of time. Deus ex Human Revolution: Lack of builds variety and lack of sense of "progress". It's a complete different game than the first Deus ex. In the first Deus ex you can have any approach you want (stealthy, more action oriented) and you can make different build s, but in Human Revolution the only way you can play the game is the stealthy way with hacking (expecially if, like me, you play at high difficulty). Boss battles are also terrible. Bioshock infinite: Similar to Deus ex Human revolution.
