When I first played this game, I was trying for zero kills on the first prison break level, but I ended up killing the last guard before the gate explosion somehow. I thought, "oh! He suffocated because I locked him in a dumpster!! That's so clever!" And then I played it again and I realized that the dumpster happened to be right next to the giant bomb ☠☠

Doing a no death playthrough is tough, you'll have guards get knocked out by sleeping darts and fall off a balcony or ledge and die from the fall.

Dishonored 2 has one of the most intricate level designs I have ever seen in the Clockwork Mansion. Also, it had time travel that was better implemented but overshadowed by Titanfalls 2 similar level released around the same time. Death of the Outsider is a lot of fun, they removed the Chaos system, energy regenerates, the powers are even more evolved. Arkane just decided to let players go wild without restrictions.

the only part of dtto i liked was the bank heist. other then that it feels like its just discount dishonored 2. plus daud didn't get enough screen time and his death was done well enough but the end felt like it fell flat and it didn't give enough information about what happens after the campaign like the rest of the series had before it. fun but not a worthy end to the series

This was one of the best immersive sim's since Deus Ex for me. It's one of those games that I liked so much that I replayed it to see the other endings. I'm disappointed that Arkane kinda split up into Arkane Lyon and Austin after Dishonored 2 and they didn't more more of this game and/or Prey and went into a completely new direction with their games so I miss Dishonored` like games dearly.

Regarding Dishonored 2, I enjoyed it a lot, including the Death of the Outsider DLC as well. One thing I enjoyed in DH2 was how they actually made a point to incorporate the "Mostly Flesh and Steel" concept into the storyline. Whether or not you decide to accept the Outsider's gift, and thus give yourself a crazy number of powers to play with, is somewhat worked into the narrative to a small degree. It's not game changing that I am aware of, but at one point during the campaign, a character actually remarks on how you didn't take any of the Outsider's gifts. And given the narrative tone of the game, it kind of added a new dynamic to the low/high chaos component, into a corruption/virtuous component, for lack of a better dynamic. Do you reclaim what was taken from you by making a pact with the "devil" ? Do you reclaim with your own blood and sweat? Ultimately it's more a personal aspect to it, but it was personally so compelling for ME, that my first playthrough of it, I didn't take the powers at all. I wanted to beat the game as a pure human, untainted by darkness. Just for my own personal enjoyment. And it was fun. I also changed it up based on which character I played as. One of them, I canonically had refuse the powers, the other I was like "pssh, yeah sure man, I'll make whatever deals I need to, to achieve my goals."

The resemblance to Thief makes a ton of sense when you remember that Arkane had a lot of former employees who came over when Looking Glass Studios went bust. It's the same reason Arkane made Prey as a spiritual successor to System Shock. (Irrational had a lot of former Looking Glass people too, hence Bioshock.) As for the rest, yeah, the disconnect between "here, have all these extremely lethal toys and superpowers" and "punishing you for actually using any of them" was a very common complaint about the game, and as you noted, the penalty kicks in very quickly. It makes sense, since most of the guards are just doing their jobs, but still. On the bright side, at least it's still a ton of fun to go pure stealth. I think the nonlethal ways of taking out your target and ruining their lives were probably my favorite part of the game. A good revenge story should be poetic and creative, not just stabby, and going Edmond Dantès on their asses felt way more fitting.

I don't understand why you didn't say much about the lore, art design and atmosphere, they are absolutely phenomenal and one of the best aspects of Dishonored along with gameplay. Stealth in Dishonored is one of the best in my opinion, because it is literally the only game (from what I have played) that has more proactive stealth than typical reactive stealth, which makes it much more dynamic and fun than other stealth-action games. I also never understood people who complain that the chaos system affects the ending and restrict the "fun". Your actions during gameplay have consequences and directly affect the ending, this is a conceptually perfect system for an immersive sim that makes the game fundamentally better within this genre. Other than that, the review was quite good. Dishonored is my favorite game series and I hope you enjoy the sequels.

I am looking forward to you playing Dishonored 2. I never could quite get into that game (for various reasons). But the first game feels like the perfect mix of everything just coming together and creating a masterpiece. Feel like the length of the game is particularly perfect in this regard. It's just long enough for you not to feel ripped off, but also not so long that some of the repetitive aspects of the game start to drag on you. And if you still haven't had enough after finishing the game you can always replay it with the opposite playstyle to what you just chose (stealth/murder spree).

Dishonored is my favourite franchise of all time. It’s not just the gameplay, but the world Arkane has created. Alle the Lore around the isles and Tyvia are just mindblowing. Wait until you find out more about it in D2 and DotO. They created such a rich world, I often play the games just to be there. The same with Prey. It hurts so much that they had no real success with Deathloop und Redfall, I still hope we will see Dishonored 3 or Prey 2 in the future.

I actually just started this a few weeks back (but was promptly distracted by other games - Darkest Dungeon 2). I did plan on continuing it, I just did the first prison breakout bit and boatride to meet some folk, but the prison section was good fun - I did like a deus ex ghost approach, entirely unseen, and it seemed decent but I did also notice the guard detection seemed a bit squirrely at times but figured it was just because i hadn't adjusted to the game yet. Will probably continue and do a non lethal ghost / low chaos by the sounds of things / run.

Good stuff. I agree with all criticism, especially chaos system, which I think discourages interacting with more interesting system. Overall the sequel handles with better with most of Emily’s kit being useful in both lethal and non-lethal playthroughs. Though even the binary state of “good, bad” playthrough is something I am, not a fan of. I wish consequences were more gradual - that we could make decisions on how to handle the counter on individual basis rather than adopting playthrough wide approach for the whole game. I think it would result in a more interesting title if we could shake up our approach more. I wonder what you will think of the sequel - it is overall a straight up improvement on the original (some of the missions are a real marvel of level design) but I found the story to be very shaky.

I certainly enjoyed it, as I said. Mind, still shocked by how some reviewers can get hung up on single points(A LOT of reviewers will spend whole minutes on the fate of Lady Boyle, for instance. Because they seem to ignore what non-lethal options are for the other targets). Heck, I still remember one that said she thought the empress was the villain, who was doing all sorts of nasty things and not supporting the quarantine. Turned out her only playthru was on a stream, and she had read literally nothing. Like, not a single note or book. That all being said, between the 3 games, this is the hardest to replay, since you're starting ALL the way over, with no 'new game+' bonuses or abilities, and quite a few things like the prison being pacing disasters on replays since they are very set piece heavy moments that require you to play them as intended. Of course, that does allow this one to tell a VERY coherent and present story, immersing you in all the things Corvo is having to do to win back the Empire for Emily, which is why I think we have such an attachment to him that they allow him or Emily to be playable in the next one, because they know some people will want to put on his mask again just for one more go. Anyway, I was expecting the Trials to slow you down more than just a day or two, as I've heard nightmare stories about them, though I'll admit, since there's no bonus in the main game, I'm not going to play them myself.

There's so much to love about the Dishonored titles and Prey--level design, style, creative powers/moves and even more creative uses for them, and incredible world-building are just a few examples. I sincerely hope that Redfall doesn't sink them. At the very least, I hope the great minds in the studio are able to move on to bigger and better things. Redfall seemed like it had the foundation for an interesting story and then someone (or multiple someones up the ladder) kept making demands of it that just weren't feasible or intended from the start. What started as someone's passion probably turned into the spoiled milk in the fridge that no one wanted to touch to throw away. We know Arkane is capable. Redfall reeks of tampering and unrealistic expectations. We've been seeing this type of crap happen to a lot of hyped up games over the last few years--ME Andromeda and Anthem come to mind--and I almost never come out of it blaming the people who worked on it but those who loomed over them going "fit that square peg in the circle hole."

Great game. It has an unique take on the steampunk (whalepunk?) setting. The motivation to take down the villains is on par with Max Payne. In some games you don't really care why you go after the bad guys and here this is not the case at all. A bit like "The Count of Monte Cristo". The gameplay is forgiving (which is a plus for me). It does not require you to go pure stealth. If you get caught you can fight back pretty effectively and you can also disengage and hide.

Like I mentioned in the prior video, Dishonored is one of those titles that I like to play once or twice per year. It's my favorite stealth game of all-time. I love the Steampunk Victorian setting. There are so many options at your disposal when it comes to eliminating certain targets, whether it's lethal or non-lethal. Of course, part of the fun in Dishonored is going in guns ablazing and using Corvo's supernatural abilities and causing absolute mayhem. You'll end up getting a high chaos rating, but the game ends up being more enjoyable. What's the point of having awesome supernatural abilities if you can't utilize them? Taking the low chaos approach is still fun, but it takes a lot more planning and time, especially on harder difficulty settings where you need to take every action into account. The detection system isn't perfect and it does have some inconsistenties, but it works for the most part. It's unfortunate that Dishonored 2 didn't do well, which was due to the myriad of issues that the PC version had at the time. The entire series is a blast to play especially the first Dishonored. Thanks, Mortim for the awesome video! Your hard work is always appreciated! Keep it up! God bless and stay safe!

How in the actual phuck have you 100% Dishonored already? It took me like, 6-7 months, it's taken you 6-7 DAYS!?! 🤣🤣 Very impressive pace good sir. I'm blown away.

Still have the Game Informer issue with this on the cover. Absolutely love the art style and it was an amazing game. Its one of the few I have played multiple times, every time trying to get the no kill achievement and every time, never get it.

I feel like playing a huge puzzle game with dishonored especially on low chaos runs. Edit: also most abilities and equipment doesn't cater to a low chaos play style (which yes, Dishonored 2 addresses). But you can tell that the devs put care and love in the game.

Next one is exactly like 1 so a break is a good idea, but 2 is soooo good, levels are so much better, and just tiny touches to the gameplay make it feels so much better, you in for a treat with 2

It's definitely not exactly like it. There's two playable characters, way better level design, a new location, more powers, and the whole rune crafting system.

@@goosewithagibus gameplay is exactly the same, objective is exactly the same, new level design does not change the formula it makes the original formula better, I'm not dissing the game in any way, it's an amazing sequal

There is a mission where you have to fight your way up through a guard post to reach a glass house at the top to kidnap someone. But if you have double blink you can avoid all of that by climbing onto a chimney and blinking straight up to the balcony outside the glass house. That kind of flexibility is so rewarding.

One part of the chaos system that I like, is that if you kill all of your targets you'll still get the low chaos ending, despite those having alternatives to "spare" them, which is a fate worse than death, every time. Chaos can be seen as your professionalism. You're an assassin, and assassins aren't meant to leave collateral damage.

Yeah the actual limit of kills before high chaos is around 10 or so, so just the targets isn't enough if that's all you're killing

What a game it was. Same for the Dishonored 2. They really nailed it at creating a whole cohesive world, pretty grim and dark where you can feel the poverty of people, the decline of the nation. You could really be immersed in that world with lot of little scenes, or, as you mentioned, all the quotes from the Heart, which gives you a deep insight of what's happening, revealing sometimes how desesperate people are in that game. Nice replayability too whith High / Low chaos. Characters were well written too. Thinking of those two gems of a game makes me desesperate when you know, now, what Arkane Studio has become with its lattest title. :/

I beat it on the 360. I recently got the definitive edition on PC on the Xbox app with the notion I'd go for most of the achievements. I did the first level but somehow didn't get ghost. I uploaded a video of that to my channel and posted it to reddit but didn't really get great answers. Like you'll know you're in the clear if at the explosion where you break out of the cell you don't get shot at... which I didn't as is obvious from the video. Ah well. I missed out on 6 achievements. Trials stuff. Void Star, By My Hand ALone, Assassin vs Machine, Headhunter, Devil, and Time Management. I'm going back to some 360 games to try get stuff I missed before. Currently playing Hitman Blood Money. Some games don't work on the Series X though and I'll not be able to go back to do some stuff unless I get a 360 or power supply for my One. I've misplaced it somewhere. One of the games I intended to go back for achievements was Metro Last Light. Speaking of Metro, I'd put the Dishonored games, Bioshock (particularly the first), and the Metro games as really good immersive games. Something to consider if you're looking at future games to play. As far as Metro goes, there's 3 games in the series. The first two have the original versions and redux versions. Different voice actor in the original of the first game, then they got a different voice actor for all games since, sequels and the redux versions. The redux versions improved the gameplay yes but they also change the lighting which has its pros and cons. It's a lot brighter which kind of changes the tone of 2033 which somewhat takes away from the survival horror feel somewhat. (If you do play them just be careful about two things: You have military grade ammo that is currency. You'll want to avoid using that as ammo you shoot, and secondly there are areas you need the gas mask to survive but you should be careful to take the mask off when you don't need it to conserve filters. It's easy to leave the mask on when you don't need it and on difficulty settings where filters are more sparse this is not good.)

Dishonored was pretty fun. Given the backstory, I tried to play the character into that and the good ending was pretty easy...because I really didn't kill many at all. I KOd a lot. Pity I still haven't been able to get into the sequel. I've started it multiple times and just wasn't grabbed by it.

I remember being torn when this game came out. It was a great game.... but it was incredibly short. And this was one of the first games that came out with a 59.99 price tag back when most games were 49.99. It was this whole 'oh this game is fun... wait it's done? I payed sixty bucks for a 12 hour game?' kind of thing.
