My main issue with The Callisto Protocol is that, for all it was attempting to tap into Dead Space nostalgia, the enemies are utterly forgettable. Think about Dead Space and how iconic different enemy types are - the slashers, obviously, but also the leapers, the lurkers, etc. You can recognize them each just by their silhouette. Callisto Protocol, by contrast, mostly has “guy with skin condition of varying severities” and “dude with two heads”. It is visually very impressive, though.

Ill never forget playing mafia 3 and running across the french quarter/markets and thinking “if this is over here, i bet bourbon street is this direction” and i found it immediately on my first try and that was SUCH a cool feeling - being able to navigate a video game world by a real world memory. Also, i really like games where you hunt down bosses and/or enemy captains from a hierarchy. Some examples of that are - mafia 3, shadow of mordor/war, assassins creed odyssey (loved it as a full blown rpg), and of course, the old mercenaries games. Inquisition is such an interesting game to be in this conversation. Cause while I agree that the discourse has collapsed around it by this point, that game won many GOTY awards the year it came out. It's wild that a game that was so successful could now be widely considered "bad" partly because of how contrarian *some of the fandom has become in recent years. EDIT: if you legitimately didn't like the game, your opinion is valid. I've heard enough about it now. You don't need to tell me. But feel free if it's really eating at you.

@robinmattheussen23958 ай бұрын
I do think it's a shame that you assume that people call it "bad" purely because they want to be contrarian. Clearly this is not the case. I recently (two months ago) played it for the first time, and I ended up putting 65 hours into it. If I wasn't willing to give the game a fair chance, I wouldn't have put that time into it. But despite putting my best foot forward, I have to say that I personally found it to be a really awful game. If I was just a hater with a predetermined opinion, I wouldn't have bothered with finishing the game like I did. The only reason I finished the game is so that I could wrap it up and form a coherent opinion of it on my own. I think you'll just have to accept that there are many people who genuinely do not like this game. I think being a contrarian and hating the game for the sake of it is honestly just as bad a rejecting other people opinions offhand because you can't believe there are people who just didn't get the enjoyment out of it you did. That's just not fair and not productive. You also claim that it is wild that such a successful game can now be considered "bad". That's honestly not wild at all. Many games are successful commercially and critically while still being very divisive. Just take DA2 for example. That did pretty well with critics and sold quite well too. But it was almost instantly maligned by fans upon its release. It's not that uncommon at all. Or take Monster Hunter World. That's one of Capcom's best selling games of all time, was critically acclaimed, and is hated with a passion by a significant portion of the fanbase (I do not agree with that, but I cannot take away their right to their own opinions). Sony dropped Demon's Souls and didn't even want to publish it outside of Japan because executives thought it was an awful game, but it became an instant cult classic upon release and is now part of a series of some of the most popular games in video game history. These things happen all the time.

While Dragon Age 2 has a lot of flaws, and that dev time they were given is just staggering, it still one of my favorite gaming experiences. To me, the biggest thing with, aside from the crunched dev cycle, is that it was just at least a decade ahead of its time with what it was trying to do and the story it told. Which I think is reflected on how massively the response to it and how it is discussed has changed over the years. Also, not only is the character gallery it creates magnificent, but I still count three antagonists from that game among the best I've encountered in gaming. Finally agreed on the Hinterlands as I would argue that it was the sole location in DAI where the story conflict actually felt realized in the area. This was due to their open world/exploration approach which meant that the locations had to be separated from the central storylines, which led to a weird sense of detachment between exploration and the main story.

You could just revisit them if you want to really. Also, the fact that he is again so normal about loving a bad game proving that likes and dislikes are just subjective stuff. I actually enjoyed "Fire Emblem Fates". Conquest, especially. Yes, the story could've been better, and Birthright was a bit too easy. But it was my intro to Fire Emblem as a series, and I loved all the characters in it. So many of them were really memorable and distinct from each other. Conquest also had some seriously good gameplay and challenge to it. Probably best in the series. (That said, "Shadows of Valentia" is definitely tied with it for favourite.)

I won't pass judgement on Starfield until I've actually played it. What put me off buying it was the ridiculous price they set it at (and so many other AAA publishers are now doing) . At minimum, it'll need to go on sale for 50% before I consider getting it. At which point, I'm sure I'll find something to enjoy. Broken Roads is on my Steam wishlist and despite whatever negative reviews it received, I fully intend on buying and playing it at some point. The Callisto Protocol isn't my kind of game so I never gave it much thought. I only got maybe a quarter of the way through DragonAge Inquisition before I got distracted by another game. I don't recall why I never got back to it. Some of the systems were a bit clunky (like the weapon/armor crafting and a map or two was a tad confusing) but for the most part I was enjoying the game. I was a huge fan of DA Origins and while I liked the story in DA2, I didn't care for the lazy, slightly redecorated but obviously overly reused settings. Not sure if I'll ever get back to Inquisition since the surprise reveal was spoiled for me. Also, EA's App of the moment is always annoying. As for The Outer Worlds, I never really forgave Obsidian for it being an Epic exclusive for such a long time. By the time it came to Steam, I was simply no longer interested. I might give it a chance eventually but there's only so much time I dedicate for gaming.

I think what it boils down to is expectations. I haaaaated Fallout 4 but it's a me issue, I was coming in fresh from FNV and I have come to recognize that many things were done right in that game (like gunplay), but those were the bits I didn't care about, while the bits I did care about (like writing) were basically afterthoughts. Ultimately, if you come in with high expectations you made for yourself, it's on you. However, if the *company* set up these expectations, as in the case of Starfield, it's absolutely on them.

- RE: Operation Raccoon City/Resident Evil 6 - Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel - Dead Rising 3 - Jaws Unleashed - Dragon Age 2 What's considered a bad or good game is completely subjective. A well-received game doesn't automatically make it good and one that has mixed to negative reception doesn't automatically make it shit. Everyone will have a different experience with the same game. That's how life goes. As long as you can explain your points in a healthy, civilized manner, you shouldn't be shamed for liking or disliking something that goes against what the general public perceives a certain game. Video games are a fun hobby that shouldn't be taken so seriously to a point where people resort to being toxic when explaining why they like or dislike a game and anyone who disagrees with them is wrong and their opinion should be invalidated. Great vid @Mortismal Gaming! It made remember many games that I have played which may not have had overall positive reviews, yet I enjoyed playing them despite their reception. I think it's because, while it isn't the second coming of anything, it's also not horrible? Exploring the world is decent, the characters are alright, the combat is fun, you can get really good at it while not feeling like it's too easy or you didn't work for it, and you can change your build easily enough. A solid 6/7 out of ten on all accounts, unlike most "good" games, that stumble on exploration, characters, story, quests or combat, while being good at the others.

Mostly with the perk system, armor and weapon variety. The perk system is very uninspired and are mostly just flat increases. Compare that to New Vegas and you had a whole array of interesting perks for roleplaying. The armor and weapon variety was also very lacking. Not necessarily a sprawling 100hr+ game like other RPGs, but just “more.” I found the gear/loot, enemies, and exploration somewhat lacking. Also, there weren’t any particularly memorable choices to redo and devote whole playthroughs to, so the replay value was limited for me. Nonetheless, Obsidian has a very solid foundation to build upon for their sequel.

Inquisition was my first hook into dragon age when I was a teenager. I started Inquisition, realized it was the third game very shortly into it, and then I played all the games that came before it. I still love it. I love all the games. The entire franchise feels to be written with love, and I can look past some technical issues, especially because not all of it is the Devs fault. I appreciate them experimenting, and I appreciate that they really always do make me care about the world. They can never make me hate Inquisition. I recently got my husband to start playing it--he is a big fan of Fallout, at the same level I am of Dragon Age, and he is really enjoying it. Fills my heart. I get it is not for everyone, but lately, and this is partly a vent, people speaking on the next game coming out, saying it will fail, bug me because it is not out yet. It wouldn't bug me if the hate was not SO BAD about it. I acknowledge faults of development, as well as the fact that the game did not please everyone in the way Origins now seems too, but Inquisition did not win awards for no reason. At this point though, it feels as if the game is slowly teetering into a cult classic rather than a wide success. I partly feel like Anthem's failure made people view all the works of Bioware more critically--and even the buggy release of ME: Andromeda (although, I truly do not think that game is THAT bad, as it's set up similarly to ME:1 imo)--and that also means their older games that were, at one point widely accepted as successful. I will die on the hill that every single Dragon Age game is good, heightened by the narrative--even DA:2 with all its faults. When I play games, I remember the story. Stories are what stick with you. Bioware has always done them well.

Carving out your own story is usually where the fun is at with Starfield. Personally, I really enjoyed the wandering freelance bounty hunter angle since it leaned into what the game did well. Disabling ships, zero g boarding actions, looting contraband, eventually getting caught red handed and coerced into becoming a criminal informant made for a more memorable story than anything to do with the relics. Mods might end up having just as much draw as DLC in the long run, but that feels quite a ways off. If a modding community engages with something like Fallout 4 to the point that we're getting expansion sized mods like Fallout London a decade after release, there's a lot of potential for Starfield.

DA:I is unironically one of my favorite games. I don't replay a ton of games because I tend to play lengthy rpgs and I've played Inquisition start to finish 3-4 times now. Honestly, I bounced off of it the first time - yea, I got stuck in the Hinterlands meme. It felt drab to say the least. But then a year or so later I picked it up, paced myself outta there and the game opened up to just be this amazing game - imo. There's not quite a game like inquisition - at least doing what it's doing the way it's doing. Grand story, fleshed out characters and branching narratives and actually the best implementation of feeling like the leader of an army in an rpg of this style. Game's not perfect - of course, no game is, but it does so much right that I can easily let go of what it doesn't. Seeing it on this list makes me wanna start up another playthrough lol. I respect your list - I feel like I find myself in opposition of the general narrative around a game's quality just as much as I'm in agreement. I couldn't imagine being a game reviewer - it feels like it'd stress me to no end trying to placate people especially when a game's supposed to be ''bad'' but I FEEL like it's ''good''. For example, my hot take is that AC: Odyssey is incredibly fun. Has issues. Of course it does, but the share amount of fun you can have thrashing people and putting your build together in the end game is really akin to an arpg and it's genuinely shocking how all in the game steered into it. I get that it's nothing like a traditional AC game (my fav is Black Flag), but I feel like the amount of fun that game illicits is highly underrated.

I plan on giving it a shot sometime, can you elaborate on how to get the most out of it with the hinterlands stuff? I've heard multiple people mentioning it but they don't go into detail
@lolersthe4th8807 ай бұрын
@@fatbroccoli8 So, the game is segmented into large open areas on a world map. The Hinterlands is the first stop and gives you a few ''main quests to handle'', but it's also packed with lots of busy fetch quests etc and other ''main quests'' that can keep you there for a while. My advice is that you definitely don't need to do much if any of the side stuff and just clear stuff that's clearly main quest objectives and dip out. Once you do the overarching quest opens up and you have a lot more places you can visit to further advance main quests and recruit more characters etc, which is the real meat of the game along with gearing characters and assigning builds etc. DA:I is a game with a very flawed opening act, but it has tons of systems to interact with, many of which have meaningful payoffs. If you've never played any of the other games in the series you'll miss out on call backs and cameos, but it genuinely doesn't impact the experience because regardless of knowing these things or not, the game will catch you up to speed. Overall, if you're a fan of any of Bioware's games, Inquisition is a genuinely great game in their portfolio. It has fun character progression, a pretty large cast of companions that all want different things regarding the plot and your choices do have pretty impactful outcomes on how things play out. It was hindered on release due to its opening act and likely due to open world fatigue, but it's absolutely an experience worth having if you've played a Bioware game before or even something adjacent. PS: It's one of those games that time really favored. Sort of like the Witcher 2, which now gets far more love than it did before Witcher 3 really showed that CDPR could cook ya know. PSS: As it is a Bioware game, doing companion quests are obviously incredibly important. Some of the best moments in the game come from them honestly, it's great. Hope this helps you decide one way or the other :)

First, I have a friend who bought an Xbox just to play Starfield and couldn't put it down, so rest assured that you definitely aren't the only one who appreciated Starfield for what it is. Second, I laughed way too hard at the Australia joke. Third, I like how you bring up games you've reviewed in videos like this and mention when those games have improved since launch. I don't see many reviewers who bother with things like this so, credit where it's due. Openly acknowledging that there isn't really any definitive stance on a game these days even when you're a reviewer (since so many of them launch broken now as an industry standard) is always refreshing. Redemption arcs are indeed possible for devs. Though you'll never catch me disagreeing with anyone who feels it would be nice if redemption arcs weren't needed after a game releases. Further, I'm with you on Inquisition and Outer Worlds. I did enjoy Dragon's Age Origins more, but even so, I played the hell out of Inquisition and it was time well spent. Outer Worlds is one that I simply could not put down. Sometimes you just find the exact thing you're in the mood to play without really realizing it until you blink and six hours have gone by somehow. That was Outer Worlds for me. I had it beaten twice before any of the DLC dropped so I really should go back at some point and do another run to incorporate those other parts of the story.

I only recently got The Outer Worlds in preparation for Starfield, and I actually liked it way more. I think people were expecting more from it given it was made by the same guys that did New Vegas, but it’s definitely a great experience as a new IP. I can’t wait for the sequel 👌

Outer Worlds was amazing. Had a lot of fun playing it.

Thanks for this channel with no hyperbole or clickbait. I really value your good honest reviews and ability to form an opinion, articulate it, stand by it, considering both pros and cons in a measured way. These qualities are becoming rarer in our polarised algorithm-driven world.

DAI is my favourite game (now together with BG3). It's what made me love gaming. The story and characters are incredible in DAI and totally sold me to the dragon age lore

The Outer Worlds and Callisto Protocol would be on my list as well! Great vid.

I.....LOVED....The Outer Worlds!

I'm really torn about DA: Inquisition. I've played most of the main campaign (but never got to finish it in the end), and I liked the story, most of the characters, the inquisition mechanics, etc. What I didn't like is not really a DA-only thing, but a collection of videogame rpg tropes. 1. Oversized weapons. A rogue with two daggers looks like a gladiator with two short swords. Not the regular ones either, but really mean meatchoppers, that should function more like a cleaver, than a sword. The two-handed weapons would make Cloud Strife blush. 2. Ridiculous powers. You can smash your two-handed sword to the ground with such a force that it cuts open the rock you are standing on and that... somehow for some reason deals damage to the enemy? If you are so strong and so fast, why don't you just... hit the enemy with the same speed and strength? 3. Unrealistic feeling of the battle - and no, not the fantasy part, but the internal consistancy. For example: someone rushes your archer, and the archer just keeps shooting arrows from like ten centimeters from the enemy. (It's even shown in this video.) Things like this just ruin any immersion I had. I tried to get back into the game to finally finish it, started a new capaign with a new character, noped out in less than an hour. I might just not be in the intended target audience of the game - I'm more of a Witcher 3 / Kingdom Come: Deliverance kind of guy -, but these things just annoy me so much, I can't look past them. And let me emphasize it again: I'm not against magical abilities and oversized weapons, I actually enjoy Final Fantasy games, which do the same things even more to an extreme - but those games have worldbuildings that are consistent with the way battles are handled, and don't break my immersion.

I hear you man. Once that immersion is broken its SO hard to come back. Kinda happened to me with Fallout 4. The minutemen took me out of it so bad, I quit.

Dang, those negatives sound like positives to me, I'm gonna give it a go hopefully this year, I bought it for 2 bucks a while back

I tend to take the selfish perspective. If I like or dislike a game, then other opinions don't really matter. Which sounds bad at first, but it also saves me the time and headache of trying to change someone else's mind. I just move along with my day instead! 😊

This is objectively correct. Everyone is entitled to an opinion or total apathy. Only yours matters to you and may influence your behaviors. Including whether or not you want to learn of others' opinions. Or whether to respect each you learn of or not. Your opinion on this may differ.
@View6198 ай бұрын
Indeed. I have no problem holding a different opinion than others. But it's never worth the effort of explaining yourself or having others tell you why it's "wrong". 😅

This was a really interesting take, and reinforced why I hold your reviews in such high standing in my own purchase decisions: on the four of the five that are my kind of game in the first place (would never have bought Callisto Protocol regardless), I basically agreed. The only one was a bit of a surprise was the Outer Worlds DLCs, because Murder in Eridanos was one of the most infuriating game experiences that I've nonetheless managed to finish in the last few years.

Starfield for me personally was such a hype i insta pre ordered the premium edition. When it came out i completed it within 4 weeks and around 100 hours of playtime and just enjoyed it. It's obejectively not a good game for todays standards but there is just something about bethesda games that i enjoy. There is this "bethesda magic". I loved skyrim and have countless hours in it also modded a ton.

You just love that high quality jank
@KillerGoat867 ай бұрын
I played Callisto Protocol at launch and i seem to recall having issues with the dodge system, along with an assortment of jank and performance issues. I ended up putting it down for a couple of months, and eventually it was one of the few games i beat last year. I've recently started playing through the DLC for the first time. The melee attacks do have a satisfying crunch to them. Overall, it's not bad, but if i had to recommend a similar type of game, it would have to be Dead Space.

From what I've read it's mostly "good game on its own, but from Obsidian and especially as a New vegas spiritual successor, pretty mediocre"

The Salt-Factory review was subtitled “obsidians aggressively average game”. But i thoroughly enjoyed it.

I tried to play DA:I 2 years ago, I actually paid for the damn game (on deep sale but still) and go figure their online services were down. That wouldn't be a problem except that the single player game wont run without them. Then I tried to play the next day, got 45 mins in and the services went down again and the game crashed. Couldn't refund because it came from a bundle I just gave it a 0 star and never looked back.
