Yeah, Im a huge fan of the Fallen London universe and when I first went into Dredge I expected it have the horror dial up to 10, but as it turns out its really just a 6/10 on the horror dial. Its a really good game nevertheless and the and fear can still be very intense but it was generally not what I hoped it would be. Just imagine Sunless Sea in this engine. No sun, dark fog everywhere, somewhere at the horizon you spot a light. You may have just enough time to reach it before the Giant Eye in the dark waters beneath your boat gets to you.. And by "getting you", I mean, before you go mad and start eating your crew..

I'd love to see a game that looks and plays like Dredge but with the scope, quests, combat, and writing that Sunless Sea has. I love both both games and something inbetween would really hit the spot I think.

While I enjoyed this game, I really enjoy upgrades. Dredge let me down a bit by allowing(?) me to fully upgrade myself 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through the game. I wish there were more or more impactful, somewhat progression gated upgrades. Pretty good game, especially for the deck/handhelds. Highly recommend Judero Mort. The game is full of feeling and extreme oddness. A lot of care was put into crafting the handmade world/characters/music I don't even know how I found it, but I'm happy I did.

I do like a Tetris inventory system. It shows a need for commitment to the things being collected and the respective problems in storing such things. Other "modern" games with a line of text and same size icon don't really capture the whole "can't have it all" principle.

Glad you enjoyed this one! What I really like about it is it’s just so different (from what I usually play at least, but also just in general. It’s unique enough that you can’t just say it’s like “this game” or “this game mixed with that game”). It also just nails that atmosphere and vibe, making it overall a very memorable experience Also for anyone interested: noclip recently did a documentary on Dredge that was a fun watch!

The only thing I would add about your assessment of the first DLC (which I agree with, by the way) is that the devs made it as a response to the success of the game. They never planned to develop more content for it, but when they saw the response players had upon release, they cranked that first DLC out by the end of the same year, not 9 months later. Is that an excuse for it being shallow? No. But it might very well be the reason it feels the way it did.

Thanks for info, completed it when it came out and completely missed the DLC :) now bought! Only point on dlc is Iron Rig is basically twice the cost of the Ice one so may well be a case of you get what you pay for :) Loved this game and weirdly for a Lovecraftian game found it quiet zen (while definitely not lacking in atmosphere).

Thanks for the detailed review as always. I haven't finished Dredge--as you say, it does slow down in the later hours. However, unlike you, I did find some parts challenging. Or rather, I got into some tight spots and died a few times. Also, there are some not-really-puzzles-but-things-to-find areas that annoyed me. Without spoilers, I did get a little frustrated with how some mechanics weren't explained. Exploration games need a lot of mysteries, lovecraftian ones especially, but that's how I felt.
@AyarARJ2 ай бұрын
I think "mechanics" should not be part of "a lot of mysteries" in almost any game.

Chorus: Come up, come up, oh sweet thresher-shark. One of us today will die. One will go down the other one's throat Beneath the pitiless sky. The earth is thick with the numbers of man, The poisoned soil turns cold; So out we go to the ancient sea To feed as we did of old. (Chorus) The gods made man like any other beast, For all that his pride denies. We must take our turn at the kill, And all of the rest is lies. (Chorus) You who raise tame beasts on the land, That you march to the slaughterhouse door, May point no safe fat finger at us Who risk a little bit more. (Chorus) You who buy your meat in the stores Can rise no howl of shame; For you pay for the food-beast's death, You eat, and you share the blame. (Chorus) You who feed on nothing but plants, Don't hold your pride so high; For plants are living, and just might feel, And they take so long to die. (Chorus) So come to the battle of jaws and gaff, At the border of sea and air. We'll duel for food while the old gods laugh -- By the gods, this fight is fair! (Chorus) Fisher´s Chant - Leslie Fish

Folks who enjoy this game should REALLY check out the podcast series 'The Silt Verses' for your soggy Lovecraftian fiction fix. First couple of episodes are a bit disorienting but when you get into it it's a cracking story.
@neodav000012 ай бұрын
I never played the DLC, but yeah, challenge definitely seemed to be an issue as the game progressed. The atmosphere was nice and spooky in the starting bay, crossing the open ocean was properly scary (at least in the same way Subnautica had those big empty seabeds), but by the time you got to the last couple islands, the landscape was weird enough that it didn't feel real enough to be scary, and the "horrors" were mostly just kind of annoying inconveniences. You wished they'd go away because they're keeping you from doing what you need to do, but it became clear they weren't really a meaningful threat, and it made the earlier parts of the game retroactively feel less scary too. I liked the game, but it definitely fell off in the mid/late-game.

"As you can from just looking at this game..." Oh, that reminds me. Yes, the gameplay samples in Mort vids are great complements to the reviews [impressions, check outs] for sure. Mandatory component for any value of, course. What's missing for me in all Mort's vids is some audio sample. I'd really appreciate the similarly complementary (a) gameplay audio snippet(s), (b) dialog snippet(s) if relevant. I suspect some people might like a music snippet; whereas I could care less; but for those people, (c). Nothing long, but the matching bit to the visuals. Not a big deal and it probably changes the formula too much. If anywhere, only integratable into the Review. Anyway, meant as constructive observation. Thanks for the review on Dredge, very helpful as I mentioned in the Impressions comment!
@MortismalGaming2 ай бұрын
I get that, but the reason I don't is because I'd have to have the rights for every bit of that audio or risk copyright strikes. Dialogue is doable, but anything musical is a problem waiting to happen.
@AyarARJ2 ай бұрын
@@MortismalGaming By coincidence, that works for me, hah. Music vol 0%, short dialog sample + bit of combat audio or walla or whatever you think illustrative. For music, and risks thereof, current approach of reporting would have to stand. But again, I think it's pretty disruptive to the format. Just low key saying I feel it would a valuable add.

I ended up not liking this one myself. It IS better fleshed out than most of Team17's published games, which have a tendency to be 'great...then the money runs out so we rush to fill stuff in' sort of affairs. See also Genesis Alpha One and King of Seas. This however, is mostly feature complete, with the DLCs even adding content, and good stuff too, comparable to the main game. Sadly they ARE still just more numbers stapled on, new fish and gear variants FOR those new fish, with maybe 3 pieces in each DLC to really enhance your vessel. Still looking forward to what comes next from this team, as I can see design ethos behind a lot of their decisions in making this one allowing them to make, not a sequel given how this one ends, but another game in the same vein in the future, and making it just freaking amazing.
