You need to spread setting compound then lay tape over as 1st step.

Thanks! Pre-fill is always a great idea, but there seems to be differing views with mesh. Some say you need to with mesh tape, and others argue you don't as the gap gets filled when you apply the mud over the open mesh. In my upcoming complete garage drywall video I pre-fill everything though! 😁

Good beginner tips 👍 I’d always turned to mesh tape bc it’s sticky. But in hindsight, I was technically using it wrong this whole time 🫠 I mostly used all purpose w/ it, not quick set 🫣 These days I think it’s time we switch it up, to mainly using FibaFuse/Max, especially for these scenarios! Paper tape was always King anyway, but FibaFuse appears to be the best of both worlds! Less chances of cracking, it’s thinner, less muds needed, lays flatter less humps & sands better! Def my new goto 👏😃

You can fill the crack first if you like, but there is no need with mesh as the mud will squeeze through the mesh and fill the gap as you apply it. Never had a crack yet! 😁

You know what I'm not 100% sure. This is 45 minute hot mud and to be honest I think it's ready to go right after it dries. But that's a good question I'm going to look into that. I do recommend priming before paint. I know the paint today claims to have primer in it, but I don't trust that. Thanks for a posting a great question!

You can, but I don't believe you have to. I've never topped with regular mud after using the hot mud and never had an issue.

I like coarse drywall screws, maybe 1 to 1 1/2 inches long. You want the bugle heads sunk just slightly into the paper, but not so deep they break through.

With the mesh tape, you have to use hot mud. I used the 45-minute stuff and I wouldn't recommend anything faster unless you really know what you're doing. I just get whatever brand they have at Home Depot.

Instead of mesh tape i like to cut a piece 2 inches larger in both directions then take off the excess 1 inch of drywall but leave the paper and mud the paper in. It has a stronger seal since its attached to the drywall already and is easier to float out.

They call that a California Patch and that would have worked too. I do believe that is a kind of controversial technique that is either loved or hated. Bottom line, there is always more than one way to get any given job done!

Pros say you must mud before tapping. Then mud again until finished. Otherwise, it cracks.

With paper tape yes you do need to mud first, then tape, then top again with mud. The mesh is actually designed with adhesive to stick directly to the drywall. Then you must use a hot mud for at least the first layer with the mesh tape.

@@LongshotGarage has nothing to do with glue, but structure. Mesh or paper, it must be set on mud to keep air from entering from back of wall through the crevice. Reason why the crevice must be covered before tapping. Or it will crack with time. Same principle of a butt joint.

Just the stuff you get at Home Depot, USG Sheetrock Brand. Just in case you didn't know, if you are using mesh tape you have to use hot mud. I use the 45 minute stuff myself.

Cause you need to put mud down before the tape and then more mud on top for the tape I was always to be generous with the mud when it comes to tape after you cover the tape you slide your knife down the tape and all the excess will cone out the sides but it ensures there's mud EVERYWHERE on the tape. If you skip any of these steps your it will Crack which then causes the paint in top to Crack as well and it's SUPER noticeable haha

Sure, hit up your favorite home improvement store. Grab a bag of hot mud, I recommend 45 minutes or longer. Don't be enticed by the faster stuff, it'll move faster than you I promise. Get a metal, 6-inch, drywall knife and a metal mud tray (avoid the plastic one, I started with those and regretted it.) You'll also need mesh drywall tape, of course you can use the paper tape if you prefer. Besides that you will need some some short drywall screws, a few scrap pieces of wood, and a small piece of drywall that will cover the patch you need to make. If you don't have any drywall, they do sell small pieces at the store so you don't have to buy a 4 x 8 ft sheet. You could also get a much wider taping knife if you want to spend the money, but you don't need to. Oh, and a foam sanding block to finish it off. Hope this helps!

It is not plaster, it's drywall mud or joint compound like you said. If you're using mesh tape make sure to get a bag of the hot mud that sets in 45 minutes or slower. Anything faster than that is really hard to work with unless you're a pro.

Thanks for your comment! Hopefully, I can help. So you need a drywall mud tray and a drywall knife. If you're only going to buy one, I suggest a 6-in wide drywall knife. If you're willing to buy two, any of the wider knives will help you flatten out the patch. Of course you also need mesh or paper drywall tape, and drywall mud or joint compound. If you're using the mesh tape you have to use fast setting joint compound that you mix with water. If I can do it, you can do it -- Good luck!

You need to use something... you can use the mesh or you can use the paper. I always assumed the mesh was stronger, but recently I've heard that the paper is stronger. Remember, if you do choose the mesh you must use one of the fast drying joint compounds -- I like the 45 minute mud.

I feel if you have raw drywall, brick, block or stucco, you should prime first. However, with a small drywall patch I think you can get away without it -- especially if you do several coats like you did. If your patch looks good, it should be fine!

Just gotta soak it, the dried mud will come off your pan. Next time try cleaning out the pan and your knive(s) asap. Also don't use 5 min mud, I won't go any faster than 45 minute.

I'm not sure about that, but mine did end with texture on the wall, specifically a heavy knockdown. I didn't show the texture being applied because that is much harder than repairing the hole. Texture is an art! One of these days I'll do a video on it.

You're right, loose paper, or any contaminant, really messes up the mud and makes more work. That wasn't the issue here, the edge of the opening was fine. What you see is the mesh tape on the first pass. I like to build up in several light coats, but this job only took 2 with almost no sanding.

There's nothing wrong with this but it is faster to leave the original small hole and just blade some thick base coat or even cornice cement into the hole then tape over. If you can't get the plaster to stay in the hole you can put literally anything you want in there to stop it falling through. I've used the cardboard roll for paper tape and just wedged it. Get creative.

Believe what you want. Those lines were there until I smoothed them out with the large drywall knife, which, of course you can see. It took only minimal sanding, and yes, the edges are feathered perfectly. Once the texture was on you couldn't even find that spot.
