Moscow Orthodox Patriarch criticizes Union with Rome

His holiness, Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Cyril I, at the Feast of Victory of Orthodoxy (20th March 2016) held a speech in which he strongly criticized union with Latins that former Orthodox Christians, now known as "Eastern Catholics" signed with Rome, during Florence Robber Synod crises in 15th century, before the fall of the great and holy city of Constantinople (1453)

As a student in a Catholic university in the 1960s, I took part in interfaith discussions with an Episcopal group at another school. At one meeting the Episcopal clergyman made a side comment that "The Orthodox live in a timeless world," and I laughed in recognition as a memory from grade school days abruptly surfaced. Eddie was a kid I sometimes walked to school with, and he was Russian Orthodox. He and I were casually discussing differences between his religion and my (then) Roman Catholicism, when his face darkened and he told me that the papal legates had placed the writ of excommunication "right on the holy table" in Constantinople. He was referring to the Eastern Schism, of course, between Rome and Constantinople, A.D. 1054. At the time of that conversation, this was just a few years short of 900 years earlier, but Eddie was still sore about it. Now the Patriarch also excommunicated the Pope. I don't know who did the first excommunication, and I don't know if the Patriarch was more mannerly than the Pope had been. But for me, then age 10 or 11, it was old business. Not for Eddie.

He feels personally responsible to defend and protect the orthodox faith, he is committed to its purity. I wish Pope Francis felt this way about the RCC. I think I will convert to Orthodox, I was debating joining the Orthodox before I actually joined the RCC five years ago. They do seem more in line with Jesus teaching.

That argument cannot possibly be made about Greek churches in Greece, one of the most traditions country, but in America there certainly is some liberalization in terms of pews and confession rules etc. although they are not good things, they are far from heresy. Ecumenism is not a Greek phenomenon, but it is something that affects Gods church as a whole and needs to be wiped off the earth until a true, proper, Orthodox Union can take place

But as the Russian patriarch explained in this video, how can there be a healthy union of Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians when it is forged under duress? St Mark of Ephesus and the faithful Orthodox laity refused union with Rome under these circumstances, which is why the West stood idle and allowed their fellow Brothers in Christ in the East to be overrun, slaughtered, conquered, and dominated for 500 years by the Turks.

Unity on what basis? The prayer of Christ 'that they may one, as We (the Trinity ) are One' presupposes unity in truth and love. These are great words! This is why the Church must be cautious when in Ecumenical discussion. If any diologue is to change anything in Orthodoxy, I will not support it. I may be one of the very last Byzantine/Orthodox Catholic left in my country to be honest. I was taught well by my mothers family who have remained faithful to Jesus Christ. Eastern Catholicism has been around since the beginning of the church. Not all Eastern Traditions are from orthodoxy, Maronite has always been a Catholic tradition. By Gods grace many of the Orthodox have come back to the Holy Catholic Church.

Maronites established union with Rome during first two Crusades,, then their rite became completely latinized. And you cant be Orthodox if you are in communion with the bishop of Rome who only continued to multiply errors, heresies and arrogance. Thats the thing. We are not Orthodox. Eastern Catholics never claimed to be Orthodox. Orthodox in reality just means traditional in faith, but I see your point. Eastern is a tradition embraced by both sides. And the truth is, You can come over here and declare that I am the one who is excommunicated, and I can come over here and declare that you are excommunicated, which you are. But it is meaningless, because Orthodoxy and Catholicism are one of the two biggest traditional faiths of Christianity. Derek Ward Excommunications are not meaningless. It was the first and only punishment by the Church practiced for 2000 years. Rome afterwards introduced Inquisition as punishment, but that is not the subject. You don't know history of Christianity. Rome tried to excommunicate Constantinople for practices such as non-filioque Creed, married priesthood and leavened bread. Irony of all this is that Rome used to practice all these only few decades before the Schism. As soon as other Patriarchates and Churches heard of this Rome's nonsense they immediately broke communion with Rome and remained in communion with Constantinople, which only proves that Papacy at that time did not even exist and that pope of Rome did not enjoy any serious authority in the Church, but only the Liturgical honors of primes inter pares. 6 Churches remained in Catholic Communion, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem, Cyprus and Georgia, while Rome remained excommunicated and under anathema of the Ecumenical Council Fathers for changing the Creed. The moment Rome's Patriarchate dared to change the Creed without consulting other Patriarchates, Rome excommunicated it-self from the Church, the rest were just formalities. Imagine today someone in the Roman-Catholic church, for example roman-catholic church in Brazil changes the Creed (Credo) and then excommunicates pope of Rome for not changing the creed and accusing it for bunch of staff that church in Brazil used to practice for centuries. What? I never said excommunications were meaningless. Notice in my comment I never said "Hey it doesnt matter whos excommunicated lets just hold hands and become ecumanists!" I simply said that us going back and forth shouting that we are excommunicated is a meaningless and foolish argument as it proves nothing. I would like to see evidence of Rome trying to excommunicate Constantinople. If we wanted to excommunicate you, the Pope having the authority of God could do it in an instant, it requires no effort.

I was born in a religious Catholic family. My father joined the Knights of Columbus ( Fraternity ) My mother is a lector. She also joined a sorority from the Church. My sister is also a lector, and currently is the president of the "Columbian Squirets" Now, I, I'am an altar server and I'm part of a fraternity called "Columbian Squires" (basically male versions of the Columbian Squirets) Me and my sister go to a Catholic school. Over the years of reading the Bible, and assisting the priest during Mass, I realized that some things that we do is wrong. Catholic is based on the Bible and the traditions, which is now changed over time. But when I learned that Orthodox Christianity is pure, and is based on the Bible and is not making any changes due to modernization, I felt converting to Orthodox from Catholicism. Too bad, I can't, due to my age ( I'm currently 13) and, there is no Orthodoxy community here. I also fear my parents.

didora didi That is not true I am catholic from Iraq originally, I live in Australia and I love orthodox, I even sometimes attended orthodox churches and mass When I was in Iraq as Islamic country, Catholics and orthodox live like brothers, Muslims do not care what you are, they look at you as infidel and either convert to Islam or be killed, so we need to be together, love each other, we are all Christians at the end, catholic, orthodox or Protestants, we follow the lord Jesus Christ, do not let hatred guide you, let learn from our mistakes from the past how Constantinople gone, I know because catholic did not help and I feel sorry about that, remember Muslims taking the advantage of this division and they are coming to Europe as mass immigration, so we need to stay together in unity and god bless you ✝️
