Zevi, thank you for this interview! However, if I may achi, you seem to have misunderstood Moshe Idel. He says toward the end of this clip that his view is kabbalah contains elements of earlier Jewish teachings/concepts while Kabbalah itself is medieval. The traditionalist view goes beyond that claiming Kabbalah as a whole was either from Adam HaRishon or Har Sinai or from Rav Nechunya ben Kana and Rashbi etc. Idel isn't claiming that. The question is are there any proofs certain explicitly Kabbalistic concepts like the 4 worlds, 10 sefirot as defined by kabbalah and not as Rav Sa'adya Gaon or Rav Yehudah HaLevy define the sefirot in Sefer Yesira, etc are found anywhere in earlier Judiasm. So far I haven't seen the evidence

So exciting! Would you ever consider doing a video on Moshe Idel’s view of sixth century Jewish-Christian context for the emergence of the Sefer Yetzirah? Syriac and Coptic treatments of the decad, letter mysticism, etc? Inquiring minds want to know!!!!

Grew up as an evangelical but I've always been fascinated by theology in general and ethnology.

And I love how he didn’t say Gnosticism was “Christian” only 😅 that’s a huge talking point these days.

Kabbalah is as old as the Bible bc they based that system from the OT, specifically the 5 Books of Moses and or the Tanakh. So medieval renaissance it became a system.

Does the antiquity actually matter.

The question is akin to asking a Kabbalist… How are you? 💭 💭 💭 💭 1:50
