when i moss pole in leca i replace the bottom part with leca and perlite (super chonky) i had the rot issue till i tried that and it worked!

Is the open side to force the plant there for display purposes?

I think you mean the plastic one right? Well yeah thats the place where it can root into! And the closed side helps with water retention as well. Most climbing plants won't grow around the pole by themselves, they have the habit of growing up instead, towards the lights!
