Versatility is why you own a shotgun. Home defense, plinking, hunting. The more types of shells you can shoot is the better. The fact that the Benelli can reliably and accurately fire any 12 gauge shell on the market and is impervious to weather and regular use makes it the clear winner. And do your homework. I bought mine this year for under $400. The value is there.

I have a supernova, its true what you say about the action getting smoother. But I've had issues with the gun trying to load two shells with 2 3/4 inch shells. Benelli Nova wins out. I've owned all three listed in the video. The nova has a smoother action, better ergonomics, and if you install the mercury recoil buffer, it handles stout rounds fairly well. Also the ability to use 3.5" rounds is a nice plus. The magazine disconnect option is nice. You can practice firing and loading a round manually and still have a reserve for rapid fire. The other two don't have that option.

I bought a Nova. It was the exact same price as the 870 and the 500 at the gun store I was at ($400). I also have a Mossberg Maverick 88. It is exactly the same as the 500 except for the trigger group and it is considerably lower in price. I also have my son's 870 Express in my gun safe. The Mossberg and the Remington are both more of a hunting configuration while the Benelli has the shorter barrel. All 3 work flawlessly. I like the mag bypass on the Benelli and it's ability to take the larger shells. I like the control configuration on the Mossberg the best. I also love my son's 870 Express. I would have a hard time picking a favorite. There are more options to change the Remington and Mossberg configurations but the Benelli does have a larger mag tube available and it does have the recoil reducer as an option as well. I haven't purchased those yet but they are on my list. That might swing the Benelli into first place if the recoil reducer works as advertised. Just buy them all and figure it out for yourself. I suspect you will keep all 3.

How easy is it to load in low light or even in the dark? and what type and length of barrel(s) do you need for what you're using it for? What sizes of shells will they shoot? Mossberg (with an adapter) will shoot shorts, which YES are just as deadly in a home defense scenario.

The Nova is a 3.5 inch shell shotgun, while the other two are 3 inch shell shotguns. The feeding issues come with the 3.5 territory. Was told to polish the chamber, did that, no effect, even did a barrel swap from Carlson's, still a problem. Got rid of that piece of garbage and bought a BPS, zero issues, worked flawlessly. Funny thing is though I have two other friends with 870's, zero problems. Also know others who own the 500 and the Nova, both fantastic. I have had all 3, waterfowl hunted with all of them. Have the NOVA propped in. The corner of my bedroom for protection. I bought an 870 express, hunted with it once and sold it to a friend , losing 30 bucks. Felt cheap, the barrel slowly rusting right in front of me in the morning fog. The Mossberg 500 was my first shotgun, given to me in the 1970’s. I still have it today. Good blueing, good wood finish, never failed, havent used it much in many years . I also bought a NOVA when they first came out. Great shotgun. I installed a Mercury recoil reducer in the stock with the frame in like 5 minutes. Added a little weight to the hollow stock but also helped a lot in shooting 3.5 inch BB shells for geese. Many times when hunting salt water, the NOVA would get sprayed a lot in the boat and handled with salt/ muddy hands all day. No babying waterfowl guns in the salt marsh. At night I would remove the barrel and hold it and also the stock and reciever under the shower to clear out the salt. Put it in the corner in a pail to drain over night. Use it the next day with a spray of WD40 in the barrel and action. Did this for a week at a time. That gun took a beating year after year. It never failed. 3.5 goose loads down to 2.75 dove loads, always cycled and shot. What I like about the NOVA vs the others beyond it’s overall design: NOVA comes standard with a 3.5 chamber. The other two charge a lot for the 3.5 version, a different shotgun with the Mossberg if you want 3.5 NOVA comes with a chrome lined barrel as a standard feature, others not so NOVA has the shell cut off feature, standard, others not available at any cost. NOVA has built in gun strap points, others dont. NOVA has an end cap that is also a tool for knocking out the pin to remove the trigger assembly that comes out in one piece. Others do not. NOVA was originally designed for the POLICE in Europe. The others were designed for. Sportsman. NOVA is manufactured by Benelli, a top firearm company in Europe, the USA and the world. Benelli is big in clay sports of all types, where is Remington and Mossberg? Remington is sold mostly in North America. Remington has been know for dropping it’s quality as well as Mossberg. Remington is currently in bankruptcy proceedings.

Had a bunch of old 2 3/4 reloads we were shooting clays with not long ago, couldn’t get them to load and eject reliably in three different 870’s we had (all different eras and express/wingmaster) and they worked 80%+ in our supernova compared to 0% in the 870’s and an A5. Other than that I’ve never had either nova or 870 jam/lock up ever after years of clays and bird hunting. Being polymer coated also means I would much rather expose the benelli to the elements instead of constantly fighting rust on my old blued receiver even though I love the way they look but I also love camo on the nova. The supernova has an oversized trigger guard for gloves and in my opinion the pump is way more ergonomic as well as having a shimmed stock with much more adjustability and recoil technology. I’m left handed and I could care less about the differences between safety ergonomics on these three, just train and you won’t even notice plus I think the nova might be reversible idk. Trust me I love classic American guns more than anything but for hard use I’ve gotta say the benelli is the better tool. Probably due to being a much newer design honestly

I have owned dozens of tactical 12 gauge pump shotguns since the 80s. Back then they were called "riot guns" Here is my opinion with 30+ years experience: BENELLI Nova and Supernovas are superior and by a wide margin. Mossbergs have dreadful quality control issues and design flaws. Both Mossberg 590s I owned would engage the top mounted safety when firing magnum slugs and buckshot. This is basically a failure to fire malfunction when every single time you fire a shot you have to disengage the safety switch to fire again. Remington 870s are a vast improvement over Mossberg but Remington's reputation is in question as their quality has been steadily declining since about 2007-8 or so. Older 870s are superior but some will only fire 2 3/4" shells. NOVA and SUPERNOVA are by far my favorite 12 gauge pumps ever. The push button magazine stop alone makes their design more desirable to me. Ability to accept 2 3/4, 3 and 3 1/2" is a huge plus. They are Italian, look cool and affordable.

I won't comment on the 870 as I don't own one and don't remember ever shooting one. I have a 500 and love it. I'm sold on the open elevator design and the elevator stays tight against the bolt when the action is closed. As said in the video - easy to load because there's nothing in the way. I would think the open elevator would also be beneficial for clearing malfunctions should you ever have one - I have not. I have the long mag tube on mine and a 20" barrel. This is my home defense rig. I also own a Nova. It shoots as good as it looks. I've used mine for hunting and it's made many trips to the trap and skeet range. Very smooth and balanced. I installed the mercury recoil reducer to help with recoil because it gets a lot of rounds through it in each sporting clays session and the reducer helps quite a bit. It's seen a lot of rounds and I've never had a malfunction from it, either. It's stated in the video that a few people complained about malfunctions specifically with the Nova. Look at videos on KZbin for all three of these shotguns (and any others) and you will find people complaining about issues with all of them. Some issues may be an individual gun, some may be the shooter. I can vouch for mine, though. They're both great.

I've always liked the safety position of the Remingtons instead of the others. You have to come out of the trigger guard to disengage on them. You can go into the trigger to shoot and squeeze (if your hand is adult size) to fire. Or, it's on the way to the trigger if you're carrying the gun by the grip. To engage, you come out of the trigger guard and pull with your index or middle finger to engage (assuming right-handed). The slide release being forward is the price you pay. However, 99% of the time, you don't want to be engaging the trigger when you're racking the gun; so, it's a small price to functionality.
@CoreyCJordan7 жыл бұрын
I frequently see great emphasis being placed on the location of a combat shotgun's safety and slide release. Many consider the Mossberg's ergonomics superior. I'm going to tell you a universal truth... With combat shotguns In combat, these things are utterly unimportant. Here's an example. You are part of a team assigned to clear a building. Let's move beyond breaching the building and get to entering. You will have a round in the chamber and the safety off. From here on, your trigger finger is your primary safety until the building is clear and secure. Trigger and muzzle discipline herein rules the roost. Slide release... You have no need to unlock or open the action unless you suffer a serious feed malfunction, whereupon you will fall back to the tail of the team to clear the jam or simply discard the shotgun and go with your secondary weapon. You can recover it later. Other than a malfunction, there will be no reason to open the action. Misfire? Cycle the action. Reload on the fly as needed. Again, trigger and muzzle discipline are your safeties. House cleared and secured... Now you can set the safety to on and unload the chamber. There will not be a reason to do either while working the house. Thus, the ergonomics of the shotgun are unimportant, because you should not be using either while engaged in clearing or a fight. They may seem important playing around on the range, but you will not be fighting on the target range. You may be fighting from your bedroom door, in the dark, in your skivvies. Train the way you will most likely fight and you'll fight the way you trained. Understand what concealment and cover are, and how they differ... Trigger and muzzle discipline... Much to know and practice to be truly proficient. Safety and slide release location are absolutely at the bottom of the list. Think about it. You have bad guys close by. Why the hell would you want to unlock and open the action of your shotgun? Likewise, why would you set the safety? You won't do either (unless you have the common sense of frozen clam). Later, you can do both at your leisure, when the threat is, without doubt, gone. Also, I prefer a crossbolt safety to the tang safety for several reasons. I'm right-handed and the ambidextrous safety doesn't matter. Recoil can be an issue with the Mossberg tang safety. Moreover, I can feel if the crossbolt is on fire. With the 870, it partially obstructs access to the trigger when on safe. Especially if you install an oversized safety button. With the Mossberg, you'd better look at it. I'll take tactile over just ambidextrous every time. Another Mossberg issue... If you drop it on its side hard enough, a shell lifter pivot lug can pop out of its hole in the receiver. You're out of the fight until you get the lug back into its hole. Not easy to do in the dark in a combat situation. Granted, you have to drop it just right, but I have seen it happen. Not a great design feature. To reiterate, for a combat shotgun, used in actual combat, the ergonomics of the safety and slide release are completely unimportant. You should never use either with a threat in close proximity. You should not be concerned about moving your hand from a shooting position, because you will not have to. Learn to reload with your weak hand. reload the chamber first. I happen to own an 870 Express Tactical and a Mossberg 500 Tactical, among several other tactical shotguns. All of them will do the job...

No offense, but I would like to know what qualifies you to speak on this. A lot of assumptions are made here. One is that you will never run out of ammo while clearing. Shit happens, what if you get through with one room and immediately 2 people run in shooting? You gonna tell them to wait till you have enough shells loaded? Of course not, you shoot back. Second assumption is that keeping a weapon on safe is not standard procedure by anyone in a combat arms profession. That is false. It is common knowledge that sometimes, shit happens. You trip and fall because theres a metal wire in the doorway, fall and nail your buddy in the hip with buckshot. All because you were too "smart" for the safety.

@@zer0768 that might be true but in either scenario, safety off from the start or safety on until ready for action, I don’t think the design matters. The tang safety is easier to operate, but also easier to potentially snag as it is on the top of the receiver…it’s not shielded by the scope/bolt like on a rifle. In reality you’re probably on switching the safety off, not back on until the job is done. I think the bigger consideration here is, what did you grow up with or have more time using? If you grew up with an 870 that and the Nova will feel right…grew up with a 500, it’ll feel right. Personally I’ve owned the 500 and the 870, amongst other makes/models of shotguns…just picked up two Novas, a 12ga and 20ga…20ga for my wife (compact stock). We mostly shoot clays with them together and maybe I’m just doing something right with my 12ga but I haven’t had any feeding issues. I’ll also be using my 12ga for pheasants and probably turkeys…I really like the polymer stock/receiver…seems very weather resistant.

Two things I will throw out here on the Mossberg and 870 [I have never shot the Nova]. One, add a Vang Comp safety to the 870 and it is magic to release the safety. Two if you put a pistol grip stock on the 500 you destroy it's wonderful ability of the tang safety as you now have to completely release your shooting grip to manipulate it. My department issued 870 and I used one for almost 27 years, so that is hat is on watch in my home due to familiarity.

I found the Mossberg´s controls more ergonomic, the safety and slide release. Benelli is the medium, with the safety in front of the trigger guard, and the slide release just where the 870 has it´s own. The 870 the last one, because the safety is even in a more weird place. I´ve recently bought a Benelli Supernova Confortech with ghost rings and +2 magazine extensión from the factory, and in my opinión is WAY ahead the Mossberg 500´ and 870´s.

Mossberg FTW! (Disclaimer: I cut and pasted the quoted text from a response I recently made on another video.) "My parents gifted me with a brand new Mossy 500A combo (it came with a bird barrel, and a slug barrel) for my 21st b-day. Over 40 years later, it is my go-to shotgun, and I took another deer with it this year . It's a smoothbore slug barrel that prints a standard paper plate at 100 yds every shot; less than 6" groups with open sights. The action is smooth as butter, and I can cycle it one-handed (which I don't advise). I love that gun, it's a keeper. YMMV, and invariably will..."

Having said that I do have 2 870's in the safe just so I can let people shoot them and make up their own mind. Either way you have a great dependable shotgun for not a whole lot of money that will serve you well for years. Can't go wrong with either.

I’ve owned 2 Mossberg’s over the years. Both were lack of a better way to put it were cheap and very disappointing. I hunt hard and they work fine but for a short time. Shells not ejecting, shells getting stuck in the chamber, firing pin not hitting shell hard enough to ignite primer and safety getting stuck. 3 of us all hunting together bought Mossbergs at the same time because it was the only pumps with 3 1/2 at the time. All of us eventually experienced these problems. I’ve owned 5 870’s all very good guns. I nova had feeding issues with that. Shoot benelli autos now. But I think I’d buy a knife before I’d buy another Mossberg. Maybe their quality control has improved but I shouldered one the other day and the front sight wasn’t strait so I’d say probably not.
@amandagiannini35033 ай бұрын
All three shotguns are reliable and fantastic but there really is really only one truly iconic pump and that the 870.first introduced in 1951 first saw combat use in Korea and damn nearly every conflict this country has been involved ever since.my husband used both 870 and mossy in the army the 870 hands down for long term durability,but I would think the Benelli is just to new to talk about comparing it to a 870.

had my first jam from my supernova today! granted, it was after about 50 shots, but for 1 jam after 8 years, I can't complain. the only problem I really have with it is the lack of aftermarket and factory parts, and the long ass pump (I guess I shouldn't complain considering it can shoot 3 1/2 inch magnums)
@shockwave62132 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the 3.5 inch chambered pump shotguns are made with long action bars to prevent the gun from trying to feed 2 shorter shells while being able to load the 3.5 inchers. The fastest and shortest stroking pump shotguns are made to accomodate 2.75 inch shells only for this reason.

I love my Nova to bits! I would rather sell a kidney than my Nova in a crisis! You simply cannot find a smoother shotgun If a person had a problem with that gun in regards of feeding, that person should not have a shotgun! Or a driving license. Or the right to vote. The ONE thing I would say is a drawback is the composite body as I would have liked an easier way of adding a separate shell rack on the gun.

I just bought a Mossberg 835 which was returned due to shells releasing from the tube when the shotgun was fired or when racking the shotgun.
