Do you mostly use birdshot? Because in my experience, most of the people that say that about this gun mostly use birdshot. I've personally found that it chokes on more types of slugs and buckshot than it actually works with. It definitely prefers the pricier ammo and generally doesn't love roll crimped shells.

I recently bought the Shockwave model with this magazine fed set up. I noticed the same issue with the cheaper ammunition being a bit too long. I also noticed the inside of the magazine had some rough casting spots right at the feed ramp. It took a little work with a small file and elbow grease but it cycles excellent with all brands I’ve used. Hope this helps anyone that has the same issue.

I actually like the fact that you had that ftf. It gives insight as to what to look out for when buying ammo. Just goes to show, it's not always the gun or the mag, it could also be the ammo. At first I was like, "Oh hell no! I'm not getting that!" Then after seeing it was just the ammo was too big I felt better about the gun again. Great demonstration & thank you!

A ten round mag fed Shockwave looks like it would make a great home defense weapon. And fun to shoot.

I have the 590M, and l love it. I've practiced using different makers of 2 3/4 ammo, and have had no feed issues whatsoever. I've practiced with dummy loads. No problem at all. I have 3 magazines and a shotgun bandolier, so you can have different types of ammo at the ready. Much faster than any tube fed shotgun can reload. And let's face facts: who is gonna be hanging around after you've fired off 6 shells? And still have four at the ready from the 10 round magazine! Excellent shotgun. The shotgun of the future, and the PRESENT!!

I appreciate the brutal honesty as well as the fact that your videos are non-scripted and you show us the things that others normally don’t. As far as your hypothetical question of “Who ever said my rifle or shotgun has too much ammo?” My reply would be the person that is laying prone trying to get a good shot either at distance or unseen and the magazine hinders that by sticking too far down. Just my 2 cents :-)
@GunFunZS6 жыл бұрын
1. Shotguns aren't primarily used for lying prone. It's kinda silly to reject a solution for the main deficiency of the platform, by saying it is slightly less ideal for the least common way the platform is applied. 2. the same way people deal with that using every modern military rifle also applies. Cant the sucker sideways. It ain't a big deal.
@armedrealtorakasheepdog69146 жыл бұрын
GunFun ZS Agreed, it’s not “normal” but when forced with a home invasion by thugs that would just as soon have you dead so you couldn’t identify them, that is when you throw the “play nice” rule book out the widow. By laying on the floor in the dark and shooting upward at point blank range you would catch them totally by surprise and gain the upper hand quickly.
@GunFunZS6 жыл бұрын
The Armed Realtor James Tiberius seems to me that if you're laying on the floor shooting upwards your magazine wouldn't be hitting the floor anyway . But suit yourself

A recurring nightmare I still have from time to time: I'm pinned down, my position is about to be over-ran, the only bullets I have left are the one's I'm sweating because I've just emptied my last mag', and l'm just lying there with my dick in the dirt, holding a club with an empty chamber and mag'. Besides what I'm certain is my last prayer, can you guess what else is running through my terror-stricken fricken mind? If only I had a few more rounds!
@that1justme3 жыл бұрын
I have a (Mossberg) Maverick 88, with the 20" barrel. This gives me 7+1, so it wouldn't be that much of a jump if I were considering load capacity. I use that one primarily for home defense. There are 2 things that really are appealing to me about the 590 though. Safety and load time. As kids in the house get older gun safety naturally becomes of higher concern, so being able to keep the rounds readily available but separate from the firearm is a plus. Also having a few clips ready makes loading and reloading your shotgun a breeze. Thanks for the review.
@realtyrocks1969 Жыл бұрын
A 30% increase in capacity with the 10 round mag is significant and with the 20 rd mags it's nearly 3 times more ammo versus the Maverick. Also this shotgun doesn't use clips. It uses magazines.

And I personally would put a thousand round mag on everything if I could cause you tend to stay alive longer when your the only one still putting lead down range!! Now that said I can think of plenty of gun grabbing cry baby's that would love to take us back to the day of the musket!!! Keep up the good fight!!
@jtaylorb886 жыл бұрын
Once again Kygunco gives you a true review and didn't hide the fact it had a problem with one brand of ammo. I agree it would be interesting to see how the other one ran. Also does anyone know if the tube magazine is still able to function or did they make it a magazine fed only? It would be nice to have either choice available even though I am sure you couldn't run both. Imagine if you could load the tube and after you dropped the magazine free it would then run from the tube. That would be awesome.
@FullBlownRedneck6 жыл бұрын
jtaylorb88 On pump shotguns there is a lifter that drops down and catches the shell when it comes out of the magazine tube, then lifts it to the chamber when you rack the pump. With the magazine in place there appears to be no way that the lifter would fit in the receiver. Also, on Mossbergs you can see the pin on the side of the receiver that holds the lifter in place and there doesn't appear to be one on this gun, so I would bet that the tube is only for the pump action to work.
@jtaylorb886 жыл бұрын
FullBlownRedneck your right I found out that it is indeed just there for the action to work like you say.
@kylelambert83226 жыл бұрын
I wish they figured out a system to allow it's use... They could maybe have bars like the Browning bps (? The bottom ejecting pump) that come from the side, that system allows for bottom ejection from a pump, which means it might allow mag feeding with tube function if no magazine inserted.
@saculreab27455 жыл бұрын
Tube is empty. You can unscrew the end cap for access to the hollow. I'm sure some clever third party will come up with some innovative plug for it...

Some of you Naysayers are ridiculous. Complaining about price? It's 40 bucks more than the 590A1. For a brand new product that is completely reasonable. Complaining about the huge mag? A Saiga 10 rounder is WAY longer and if you want 15-20 rounds for a Saiga, you have to use a damn drum! Double stack mags are way overdue for shotguns. And complaining about it not being able to feed long shells, that is the fault of every mag fed firearm. If you want to feed any and all things to your shotgun, stick with tube feed, they still make them. You don't HAVE to buy a mag fed shotgun.

The people talking shit are just dumb. That's all there is to it. A mag fed pump action straight from the factory is brilliant. Pump is superior to semi in many ways. You can still manually feed speciality rounds with a pump, even this one. That's not really an option with a semi because you could easily damage the gas system.

That French-made Estate OO Buck is good stuff - we bought a case a couple years ago when Midway had it cheap. It is loaded pretty hot & peforms well, but as you saw the shells are roll-crimped vs. star-crimped like most US-made stuff - thus, they are a little longer. There are other shells out there like this - in many guns, it won't be an issue, but in some it clearly can. It would seem Mossberg's tolerances don't allow much leeway in this department... Glad you showed the shells & hangups in the video - I didn't know these guns were 2.75" only, which I think is a little disappointing, especially since the design may be rather ammo sensitive...time will tell I guess. Thanks for sharing.

The Hornaday rounds are probably perfect for this mag fed gun, but honestly the only malfunctions I’ve EVER had with my standard tune fed mossberg 500 was with hornaday rounds... due to the fact that they ARE shorter than most other 2-3/4 shells. They’re just short enough to catch on the slot of the shell lifter and get hung up

Great video! Thanks for the honest review, Mossberg still got it right with that one, still, I think they should have made it a 3" chamber then it would not have had that feed problem. My AR-12 is a semi auto mag fed shotgun that handles both 2 3/4", and 3" rounds no problem. So I have to think that Mossberg could easily have done as good a job if not better to accommodate both round lengths. I understand that it would cost more to engineer, and they like to keep things simple, but "simple" runs in many directions, and sometimes simple can be more complicated than expected. Just my two cents on the subject for what it's worth, thanks again for a very informative video.

Guys, here's a clarification about how shotgun ammo is labeled. The naming conventions go back a long way whether you are going by SAAMI or CIP (European) certifications. They basically work out the same, but measure the pressure a little differently. The thing is when a shell says 3 1/2" or 3" (76mm), or 2 3/4" (70 mm), they aren't saying the loaded shell is that size. They are saying the shell when fired won't exceed the maximum dimensions for that chamber, and be under pressure limits. i.e. A fired shell labeled 3" may unfold from nothing up to 3". It could also be 2.8" that's not mislabeling, or poor quality control. You just need to know what the numbers on the label mean.

Excellent review of the Mossberg 590M. Thanks. I personally prefer the pump tube fed magazine in all of my shotguns. Fewer rounds means a lighter weapon and pump shotguns are easy enough to reload on-the-move. I think a good mechanism and tube mags is more reliable for my home defense as long as the tube spring is tight or strong enough. Mag-fed shotguns are an interesting novelty to me but the requirement of perfect rounds or shells makes me not trust all automatic shotguns tube or mag fed.

I happened to come across this which I had to have seen before because I've already given it a thumbs up. Anyway, I enjoyed the review and I'm sold on the model. I've been thinking about modifying my 535 but haven't put too much thought into that project because I honestly don't want to change it up. It's a great shotgun and I've even got the riffled slug barrel if I need it. I've seen some others but I'm leaning towards sticking with Mossberg. My older brother sold me on Mossberg when I was still probably considered a baby, not in school yet, when he fed the family well many times with his trusty bolt action modifiable choke 16 gauge Mossberg which he still has. There's other good Brand's and then there's, Mossberg.👍🇺🇸

Thank you for helping me decide, and to be mindful of the ammunition length. I personally don't plan on running anything more than 5rd. I don't like pistols, and this solves the problem of fumbling around for shells in the dark, or loading individually. Safer, and easier to use in my opinion. Leave it unloaded instead of "cruiser" or whatever they call it. Slap a mag in and you're ready.

A Mossberg 930 with ghost rings, a heat shield, and a 20 round magazine would be nice. A pump action is generally considered more reliable, and only slightly slower with a little practice. In my search for ( the perfect shotgun ) I am about to go full circle and come back to a plain old 500 with a 5+1 magazine tube. It is light, sleek, easy to point, reliable, and easy enough to top off with a belt or bandalier.

Let's just remember that the longer ammo would still work in a tube fed shotgun and there is nothing wrong with it. It's just a quirk in shot shells so find what works in your gun and be mindful of it. I just ordered my 590A1 the other day and can't wait to take it apart, clean it and go out in the yard to shoot.

As mentioned, shell choice (length) makes the difference b/w jam and clean shooting. I emailed Mossberg for a shell comparability list so I dont waste money. The 20rd mag takes a little breaking in, need to muscle it a little until spring tension eases up. But the 10 rd mag is good to go right away. Just what I've learned so far.. havent owned for long though... By the way, I picked this gun up for $369 w/ free shipping, and got the mags for half price online. Dont pay MSRP! Many have said, “why didn't they do this with their semi auto shotgun instead of the pump? It seems like that would make more sense”. This Mossberg 590M (& Remington pump magazine fed system) seems like a desperate attempt to get some of the semi-auto foreign magazine fed shotgun market share.

I have a 590M, it works good with Remington and Winchester shells. That light little 5+1 500 with the walnut stock and wood corn cob stock is just my idea if the perfect shotgun aesthetically and weight wise. I would like to find one, or see one reviewed. The 590M with slugs might make a good close to medium range hog hunter or home defense gun.

I served aboard two Knox Class Frigates during the Cold War. As a member of the Ship's Security Force, the 12 gauge pump shotgun was my weapon of choice in the tight confines of a US Navy ship. There were a variety of manufacturers' shotguns used by the Navy at that time, however, (fast forward to the present) the heavier Mossberg 590 is the only shotgun that passed all of the new, more demanding military testing requirements. For personal use, I prefer tube fed, multi-use shotguns with interchangeable barrels (hunting & home protection). Just point and shoot!

The double stack is the slickest thing, and they are offering both short and long mags in at least 3 sizes. One thing that I think Rem will be fixing soon is to gate the mag release, so that your wrist can't bump the mag release during your pump stroke. IMO that's a blatant design oversight.

Saul Alvarez LMAO! Can you imagine how big that would be? A 20 round mag for a shotgun is huge enough

Belt feed that monstrosity and see the sheer horror of your enemy. Pepper through the walls with concrete peircing slugs or deny any movement by spraying birdshot.

With a 5 round mag you could probably deer hunt where allowed. The advantage over a tube fed shotgun is capacity and also the magazine is about mid ship so it's not front heavy like an 8 or 9 round magazine tube.

Strip it down so we can see the scoring in the bottom of the receiver where the bolt has caused premature ware after cocking it a few times without ever firing it.

I like the 590m but....when I think of a magazine fed firearm, I think semi-auto. Sure I like not having to have to load more rounds after 5+1, but I will stick with Browning A5.

Some innovation in my opinion this model would be better stock with the adjustable choke ,then a few different styles of slug barrels to interchange with kind of like a remington 870 but with a more stable barrel / receive r
