Mossman Mill Cane Train Action on Finally, a Sunny day! | The Cairns Railfan

Hello everyone, welcome to a brand new video where we see various types of Mossman Mill sugarcane train action primarily north of the mill and finally on a sunny day too! It's certainly a nice change from the rainy and cloudy days when I previously visited Mossman.
Mossman Mill is located about an hour north of Cairns and is the most northernmost mill in Queensland, and Australia as a whole. Compared to other mills, it has a considerably small fleet locomotives and network size running on 2ft (610mm) gauge. For comparison to the mills further south, Mulgrave has just over 15 operational locomotives, South Johnstone just over 25 but Mossman only has just over 5!
This year Mossman Mill is only operating 5 days a week from Monday-Friday instead of the usual 24/7 crushing week that other mills are doing this season. This is because they are receiving much less sugarcane from the tablelands this year, with most of it going to the Tablelands Sugar Mill operated by MSF Sugar this year so a shorter crushing week is necessary to not finish the season too early.

We are absolutely delighted with this very interesting and informative video presentation which was much appreciated. These are impressively long trains hauled by these locomotives. When they have two locomotives coupled together, are they able to be driven by the one driver in the leading locomotive or is it required to have a driver in each locomotive? It is very kind of you to go to all this trouble to provide us with such pleasing videos, we cannot thank you enough for this.

Thank you! It’s no trouble at all, I very much enjoy trainspotting. Mossman Mill’s double header locomotives can be operated by only one end as they have synchronised controls when operating together. Thanks for your comment!
