One of the founders of PSRewired here. Just a correction, SOCOMHQ did not revive or have any part of the revival process of the SOCOM series. All of the PS2 SOCOMs (S1, S2, S3, CA) and the PSP ones (FTB1, FTB2) are hosted by us. We actually host around 50 revived PS2 online titles right now.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 also works online too. THPS4 and Underground 1 both actually have cross servers to play with PC and even XBOX. Most of the community moved to THUG2 PC but some still pop in along with other holdouts.

I played COD3 on the ps2 with dialup in like 2013. I had dial up on my desktop then a 2nd NIC plugged ethernet into my PS2. People were very surprised to see me, since the community was very small. Also no one believed I was using dial up in 2013 but it ran pretty alright.

Ratchet Deadlocked has a private server called Horizon. There are custom maps for it and everything. It's popular enough that some programmers have gone as far as to create a PC Client for it that can connect to PS2 and PCSX2 users. It basically runs PCSX2 under the hood but everything gets rendered with Unity. Super interesting project!

7:40 - EQOA isn't playable, yet. They are getting close though. At the moment you can only connect and run through the empty world. They are working on re-adding all the missing NPCs, Quests, etc.

Something that could have been touched on is Gran Turismo 4 Online or just Gran Turismo Online. It only ever saw a limited Japanese release, but some modders got their hands on the original ISO and were able to reverse engineer some servers and there's an extremely active player base on emulator.

Aww shyyyt the Socom series was my jam! My favorite was Socom 1 and 2 online. The 3rd and 4th in the series weren't that great. I also played some Tony Hawk online. Not sure which though. Midnight club was wicked back then too. There was one more game I wish you mentioned and that's Starsiege Tribes. This game was a third/first person game that used every single button on the controller. It even had split screen online! There's not too many games that would take the second player online with player one. But then again this is a list of games with at least players in them. Tribes servers are down and probably no way to play it save the PC version.

Back in the summer of 2013-2014 I played a lot of my ps2. At the time there were still quite a lot of people playing BF2 and Cod3. I didnt really try any other online games. I even had to manually patch the DNS in the game and make my own custom iso to play it online. Good times.

To my understanding, if you have a backwards compatible PS3 or one running CFW, you technically can using Xlink Kai. It is not as straightforward as plugging an ethernet cord in and hopping in, but a good alternative nonetheless!

RE Outbreak is the first and only game I set up to play online for PS2 titles through PCSX2. It's really cool that I can finally play it online whereas I couldn't when I was younger. We didn't have consistent internet growing up and the few times we did, it was usually annoyingly not compatible with consoles (i.e. - USB plug-ins with drivers for PCs). So for the longest time I couldn't even play on PS3 or 360 online, the latter of which... well, I had no real reason to play online. And even if I did, I wasn't paying them for it. I did get those $1 trials for MGSV and to play a few other games, but that was about it and I no longer need it for obvious reasons. You didn't mention it, but like Monster Hunter, when I played, you had to have an English-patched Japanese copy in order to join the servers. Hence the need for PCSX2 since... who the hell has a Japanese copy and how the hell would they patch the disc?
