Thank you for the review. I like that you go in depth with cheaper receivers, most people on youtube only want to talk about things I cant afford lol. I just got this receiver yesterday and haven't gotten a chance to play with it too much, but it seems promising. At first I thought it was complete junk until I realized that the C2 oled has eARC disabled by default! Changing that made things much better. I may still go with the yamaha you reviewed, but I couldn't pass up trying this one for $250 open box.

I had trouble getting rid of the irritating popup menu everytime I start my receiver. Now I am using just optical cable to the TV. But to get the full bandwidth audio you really need HDMI, so that is a problem now :) I bet there must be some better choices in 2023. SONY are not willing to upgrade to fix the menu issue, since they are just recommending people to buy more expensive SONY gear.

question-- want to replace SAMSUNG HT-C5530 BLU ray wants to keep speakers, is it possible to use Sony AV receiver with those speakers??

Odd question here...The little Hi Res sticker on top corner, are they 12mm or 15mm? I have 2 sizes and want to put on..thanks

Hi, the Hi Res sticker is 10mm (just the yellow part). Adding a mm black border, looks like it's 12mm.

I own this unit and am planning on using it to run 6 6.5inch ceiling speakers in a 20ftx 35ft room. Kitchen, dining, living room open concept. I want to play music mostly for gatherings. what speaker would you suggest to go with this unit? Id like to be under $100CAD per speaker.

The JBL In-Ceiling or In-Wall Loudspeakers: B-6IC was on sale exactly 2 weeks ago for $30 a speaker on the JBL site. Price is usually $119. We missed that deal but I would keep an eye on it. These Sonance MAG6R is on sale at Bestbuy $170 ($530 OFF) for a pair so it's $85 per speaker. They are really good sounding as you can also tell by the reviews. They do go lower to even $129 if you can try your luck ! You can adjust the bass/treble level ( ) of the front, center, surround/surround back and height speakers. Select [Sound Effect] - [Equalizer] from the home menu. Press / to select the speaker whose level you want to adjust. Press / to select [Bass] or [Treble]

I've been checking other AVRs and this is only one to let you change the levels of all the channels ... front center sub ... on other AVRs@@starazure ... while listening to the music ... I like this feature ... I want to be able to boost the height levels :-)

I see this dont supports WiFi but I wonder in what case you may need WiFi? So between this and yamaha rx v40 which is the better choice?

You will need wifi to interact directly with the receiver. For example on the Yamaha v6a, you can play music directly onto the receiver without connecting through something like chromecast.

If the receiver components are fine then try these: If the PURE DIRECT indicator on the front panel lights up, press PURE DIRECT on the receiver or on the remote control to turn off this function. Press DIMMER on the receiver or on the remote control to select “BRIGHT” or “DARK”.

Earc makes it so much easier. I just plugged the hdmi from my tv to the receiver and the remotes works to turn thing on and off. Earc is the best !

Question, I own this receiver, can it really push 2 subs successfully? How do I connect the second one?

Hi, your subs need to be "active" which means they need their own power. There are two subwoofer outputs so you can use those. For DIY or passive subwoofers, use an amplifier in between.

@starazure I'm actually going to pick up thr second sub tomorrow, it's the same as my first, a JBL Northridge E150P. Currently I'm running on 5.1. Is there a 5.2 setting on here?

Cool review...Will this receiver work with a 5.1.4 theater system? I really don't need the extra up-firing capability of my front satellite speakers.

5 + 4 is 9 channels but this has just 7 channels. So it can do 5.1.2. If you are looking at 4 height channels or to upgrade in near future you should look for a more powerful and better receiver.

You can solder the ends of your speaker wires and then it's no more difficult than banana connectors.

@@starazure I have two questions for you. I have the Bose Acoustimass-6 home theater speakers. Will this Sony AV790 be a fit? And will this AV be a fit for my new Sony X X90L ?

Most TVs work with receivers if they both support 4K and receivers usually pass through the 4K signal to the TV without additional processing. So, no problem with your Sony TV compatibility. Now for your Bose speaker system, I would encourage discrete separate speakers for example a Front Left, Right, Center and SubWoofer. However the Bose system should work and an AV receiver will bring out richer, room filling audio out of them. The recommended power for your Bose system is 10-150 watts with receivers rated from 4 to 8 ohms which falls within range of this receiver.

@@starazure Thanks for your quick response. I was between getting a sound bar or a AV receiver. I had the Bose speakers for sometime now and never really got to enjoy them. This will definitely save me some money instead of buying a sound bar, in which I probably would have to buy a subwoofer. I hear the DH790 doesn’t have WIFI……so what would be the next model up from the DH790? Thanks again…… u just gained a subscriber! 🤗🤗🤗

Hello hi everyone. I want to improve the receiver for Christmas, I have an old ONKYO HT-590 (16 years old). I've been thinking for a year now and choosing between SONY STR-DH790 and DENON 1700DAB :-). I have owned a SONY TV for 3 years and wanted the best possible compatibility with the receiver. I only have the receiver for the signal from the TV and I need new ATMOS and bluetooth. I have Polk Signature 8 Ohm speakers. I don't mind the regular terminals on the DH790. I plug it in once and I'm done. I don't even need HEOS apps etc. I don't have a chance to listen and compare. Can anyone recommend SONY versus Denon? Thanks in advance... Martin

The Denon is an easy choice if budget allows - Audessey room correction, 8K@60. However, I would wait for black Friday and Holiday season and watch out for deals on my website dealete.com

It is a great receiver for the price but the display quality is pretty good but not that great. This receiver came out in 2018, almost 6 years old. Honestly, this sony receiver is way better than any entry level Denon or Onkyo receiver. So far, Onkyo has the worst sound of all. I currently own the DH790 and run a 3.1 system which is plenty for me.

@@starazure Sure! Denon 570BT, S670H, and Onkyo NR5100. The Sony DH790 does a pretty good job with my Sony Bravia OLED XR A80J.

Don't drop this receiver, even in its box. Very thin PC Board and not built up to the standards of classic SONY Amps or Receivers. Want a great amp look for a TA-2625 or TA-F3A. Works of art inside and out.
