What is really interesting is how people handled Dream. Before they saw his face, they shipped him and even drew the most disgusting and perverted things every with him and Dream SMP members, including TommyInnit who had to repeatedly say he was a MINOR. Dream kind of encouraged a lot of this (besides the creepy pictures/storiea) and saw it as just fans having fun. But as SOON as he showed his average, not even that bad looking face, everyone did a complete 180. They expected him to look like Zac Efron and Chris Hemsworth combined into one, with muscles as big as Russia or something. When they realized Dream looked normal, they literally bullied him so bad that he had to undo it all. I don't like Dream, but I feel bad for him. My biggest issue with shippers is that shipping is the only thing in their fandoms they engage in. The lore, development, worldbuilding, arcs, themes, narrative- all of it get pushed aside because these people don't care at all for any of it. They're the reason that gatekeeping is necessary. I only enjoy shipping based on lore and interactions between characters because it gives the relationship atleast more substance than just one aspect of it. I'm not too fond of the "enemies to lovers" ships, because the grand majority of them are incredibly toxic - generally involving a villain that hasn't gone through enough redemption...or ANY redemption at all. Classic example: Cloud with Sephiroth. You know, the fallen hero who destroyed Cloud's hometown, murdered his mother, murdered his hometown friend's father, maimed said hometown friend, maimed him, constantly mind-raped him, murdered another really close lady friend of his much later on, and was ultimately out to destroy the planet that he lives on? And Cloud has even made it very clear, multiple times, that he wants NOTHING to do with Sephiroth or his weird brotherly obsession! ...But of course, shippers loved putting these two together because they're both really handsome men that battled each other. They don't bother looking past the surface level and just say "He's hot and he's hot, so let's slam 'em against each other like Barbies". Now THAT is how you dehumanize characters.

Because that’s what I’m doing over here with Jess x Hawke. It may be a weird ship, but at least I’m not forcing it on people, and it’s a very specific version of the ship to make it as nontoxic as possible, because I just think their potential romantic dynamic could be fun. (Besides I’m like 90% certain both parties are fully grown adults.)

One thing you forgot to mention but is oddly common is how these people act at SCHOOL. Yeah, there's some people who actually make a ship their entire personality at school, and will say the most vile stuff imaginable since you didn't agree with their Danganronpa ship, I've seen it happen before. Or even worse, when they begin to ship OTHER STUDENTS. I've sadly had this happen to me also, you get close with a girl and you're good friends and suddenly everyone thinks you're going at it with her in the bathroom, words cannot describe the sheer horror I felt seeing fanart of me and this girl at a fucking strip club IN CLASS. The kind of shipping that I personally find creepy and gross are the ones that consist of enemy x enemy or Hero x Villain. (If I had to provide one example, I’d say Cloud X Sephiroth is a good example.) When the relationship is clearly shown to be an abusive and toxic one, knowing all the evil and creepy manipulative things that the villain does to the hero. The villain is shown to only see the hero as a toy, nothing more than a puppet, and nothing less and you’re supposed to feel bad and sympathetic to the hero and the other characters that the villain has hurt, therefore hating the villain for their wickedness, the impact their actions caused, and root for the main characters to take them down. Why in the hell do people look at the moments of the hero getting abused and tormented by the villain, get turned on, and romanticize/spice it up to high heaven? It’s just creepy and uncomfortable as hell. The examples I’ve seen usually belong to the Yaoi category which I suppose speaks for itself. It’s disturbing and gross in my opinion. I will never understand shipping and never have. I know that they’re only fictional characters programmed to follow a certain script at the end of the day and all, but it’s still gross, creepy, and uncomfortable to me.
