@@cyber2526 I think, in theory, you could sinker EDM it. In theory, no idea if it even possible in reality. I certainly suspect it isn't something that anyone would choose to use as a manufacturing technique except in weird corner cases like a down factory and a 3 month lead time.

Actually, what I'm wondering is how valuable all the work on the outside beyond the rouging pass is? Does it actual make the part better at it's job? It's a rocket so weight matters and it's most likely a highly stressed part so sharp inside corners are a no-no, but it would be interesting to see how much the client could have saved by setting the outside tolerance as -0.0/+0.125 or something similarly grotesque.
@johgude5045
@johgude5045 2 ай бұрын
@@benjaminshropshire2900 the smoother the surface finish, the more rigid the part will be since cracks cannot start so easily. In technical terms this is called notching effect
@johgude5045
@johgude5045 2 ай бұрын
@@benjaminshropshire2900 sure on the inside, tolerances are more critical
@benjaminshropshire2900
@benjaminshropshire2900 2 ай бұрын
@@johgude5045 The stress concentrations that cause fatigue issues are only for notches. If you do a surface with a bunch of flats with convex edges between them that shouldn't be an issue. You could even do a surface with a large diameter ball end mill with large step overs and it shouldn't be a hard fatigue issue to work with.

This is the exact reason why all pump volutes are sand cast lol. This is an insane amount of work! This is a tiny volute also… I rebuilt a submersible waste water storm pump that had a volute on it about 3 feet in diameter lol. Imagine machining one that big…

The inside is just left hollow from the casting. Or not sure maybe this is 3D printed. either way I think the part is already hollow, just doesn't have machined surfaces. Which frankly is stupid as, if anything it's the only surface that should be as smooth as possible, for improved air flow. The outside is just for aesthetics and is a waste of time.
