I like how much Maul's character changes throughout the series - from a fierce, dedicated young warrior to a wandering part time warlord and finally an eccentric monomaniac who narrows his entire existence to a single, ultimately superfluous purpose of revenge. It's quite clear why Kenobi could never let Maul mentor Luke - it would literally be a damn fool crusade with that madman at the head of the rebellion!

Just a little bit of poetic justice for Maul's character: As powerful and intelligent as Maul is Kenobi knows that he's driven by power and that sometimes his determined hunger for victory blinds his vision from calculating/foreseeing possible dangers. Old Ben knows he can't outduel him because of all their previous encounters. Therefore Obi Wan weakened Maul's judgment by tormenting him by leaving him to rot and go crazy in strong Tatooine weather and it's devouring hopelessness. While Maul is damaged Kenobi draws him in only to set Maul up with a move he knew Maul would pull when Ben went into an Ataru stance, and Kenobi prepared to counter that move perfectly. It's really a brilliant Strategy if you think about it, and it justifies Maul's defeat from a power point of view. Kenobi avoids a real prolonged duel with a brilliantly planned out counterattack and Maul didn't see it coming because of Kenobi's tactic to let Maul deteriorate himself deluding his ability to see things clearly. That is why Maul looks so shocked when Kenobi cuts him down. Obi Wan isn't largely powerful from his sheer strength in the force or as a duelist, no, he gets a great bulk of it from his wisdom to unravel, prepare, and outsmart. No one has this trait better than old Ben.

I did not leave Maul out in the desert to weaken him, I only did so because I was avoiding him and had to intention of fighting him at all, as I told Ezra. I was clearly better than Maul, that's why I won the duel so fast. In fact, Maul has never beaten me one-on-one, the only time he ever gained the upper hand is when both he and savage teamed up and even then I managed to send them away running in one such encounter. Maul's problem is that he never really moved on, he stayed in the past and let his demented Sith-like philosophy destroy and unbalance him, never growing and becoming better for it. He was driven by hate and you can only go so far on hate. I, on the other hand, was able to forgive and become better, guided by the force. While he lived in the past and thought only of destroying me, I looked to the future and thus became more in tuned with the Force. The force made both my body and mind stronger then Maul ever was. This is why I defeated Maul so easily. It's not that I intentionally weekend him, I was simply always his superior. My time studying the force in my solitude on Tatooine only furthered the gap between my and Maul's skill level. In short, my power always had the High Ground over Maul.

When he said “He will avenge us” he spoke of everything and everyone who was gone....ruined.....turned to crap.....dead ever since he hooked up with the great Darth Sidious(anyone get the reference). This wasn’t just talking about Savage and Maul. This was of Obi Wan, Yoda, Fives, Mace Windu, and the rest of the clones and Jedi. All those who died have a legacy. Sidious was a time bomb. Tick tick ticking. And Fives, Savage, and all those Sidious killed(yes he killed Fives he orchestrated it) were in no way around for the boom(anyone get the reference)

In hindsight, Maul really made a perfect foil for Obi-wan. They were both young and impulsive students, but while obi wan's journey involved personal growth and the eventual wisdom that comes with age, Maul lost everything, and due to the philosophy he was raised with spent the rest of his life futiley grasping for power and ultimately gaining nothing. Their final duel highlights this: Maul proves that he hasn't learned a thing in all the years since that day on Naboo, attacking Obi-wan with the exact same move he killed his master with. Obi-wan, meanwhile, shows both his mastery with a lightsaber, and how much he had grown as a person in his exile. He gave Maul every chance he could to let him walk away and live, even after all he had done, while Maul himself still clung to his desire for revenge simply because he had nothing else left in his life. When Maul made it clear he had no intention of walking away from the fight, Obi-wan then ended it quickly, with as few moves as necessary like a true Jedi.

The Tatooine fight is the best Lightsaber battle ever: 1. From the early dialogue you can hear how angry Maul is 2. You can also see how Maul focused on nothing but revenge whilst Kenobi trained and grew stronger 3. The moment Maul says he knows Obi-Wan is protecting someone he turns on his lightsaber, it is clear how important his mission is 4. The tension before the duel symbolizes how Maul has waited for this 5. Maul tried the same attack on Obi-Wan as he did on Qui-Gon, so we get throwbacks to TPM 6. Obi-Wan defeats Maul In 3 seconds showing how much ahead he is of Maul 7. In the ending dialogue Maul admits to Kenobi how he has been used by Palpatine, and he uses “Us” refering to the fact that they have a common enemy not just each other 8. I just like the “Look what I have Risen above” line 9. This scene shows how pure of a Jedi Kenobi is. More of a true Jedi than Luke, Anakin, Mace or even Yoda was

Maul's character becomes so interesting over the course of the Clone Wars and Rebels. He knows he's been made a fool and (I think) knows he can beat neither Studious or Kenobi, but he can't stop his self destructive path. Quite tragic really. The Sith believe peace is a lie, yet Kenobi grants his most vicious enemy peace with the words "he is".

Its so interesting to see kenobi struggle in all of the fights except the last one where he just totally outclassed Maul. He finished him off in 3 swings, its like watching a chess master go up against a hobbyist. Really interesting how they decided to write that fight in my opinion. Between Maul’s utter desperation and Kenobi’s unwavering hope you could tell how this was going to go from a mile away. (not to mention you probably have already seen the movies which tells you Obi Wan survives lmao)

In their old age, I wish Maul and Kenobi could've let it go. Maul represents the extinct warrior Sith. Not all Sith were evil. Some were simply great warriors driven by their passion. Yes Maul did some terrible things, but like his brother Savage, he wasn't evil to the core like Palpatine. He had too much sorrow and pain to ever be a Jedi. But a noble warrior Sith would've been a great weapon against the Empire.

Honestly, the warrior sith were probably just as good as the old Jedi order. Sure, the Jedi were all about helping people, but they also shut down all their emotions in a dangerous way, and made a habit of abducting children. Not all of the criticisms about their corruption in the republic were untrue as well. The warrior sith on the other hand were much like mandalorians. Not necessarily having altruistic goals, but not with outright evil intent either, and often far more moral methods and customs.

I do think that why he lost in the 1st fight is because of Savage suprise and overwhelming power. Kenobi underestimated Maul, that's why he lost. The 2nd fight, however, he was gaining some ground but Maul and Savage retreated. I don't any details about the 2nd but 3rd fight was not that far fetched that someone will die. Especially when 2 Jedi's need to protect a bount hunter(?). Then, 4th fight with Maul and Obi-Wan/Ben, they were on the same level of ground until Kenobi find the upper hand by using his Master's stance to defeat Maul in a 1 or 2 step ahead of his before Master's demise.

He probably is not the best fighter of Jedi's however at the top level, he probably is not the most attuned with the force yet he was the greatest Jedi ever. Never lost hope, never found joy in killing even his greatest foe. He fought Dart Vader 3 times, win against him 2 times in their prime times while he is much older, he fought a sith who killed his master and destroyed him, he fought a sith and a magically advanced assassin simultaneously amd survived even made them retreat. He lost his master, his lover to the same foe, yet showed him mercy in the brink of the death. He had a goal, to destroy sith, bring balance to the force and endured loneliness in the deserts of Tattoine for 2 decades. He was the hope, he was the prime Jedi. At his last moment even, he sacrificed his life for the greater good, destroying sith, and through his goal he rised to a new level.
