I'm so glad you mentioned the humorous instruction manuals, which really are really quite something. I don't know if this is in the J70 manual as well, but the manual for one of my American diesels has the following excerpt under the procedure for removing the body shell: "We have a transporter lock on the molecular pattern of your locomotive. If something pops off while you are removing the shell, our starship's transporters will automatically lock on to the little part and beam it directly into the heart of the sun. Don't bother looking for it. It's gone. You might hear the transporter effect as the part is beamed away. I know it would've been more useful for us to beam the part back back onto your workbench but someone's been fiddling with our transporters and we haven't been able to fix them. Sorry." I promise I'm not making this up.

These little guys used to work on the dock railway (sadly torn up a few years ago, to make the docks look 'nice'), at the port where I work. I've seen many old photos of the engine that most kids today would know as 'Toby', hard at work. It looks a beautiful model. The detail is simply astonishing. It could be seen pulling rakes of white painted insulated 'Fish' wagons, in it's dock use, if you have any of those. Thanks for sharing.

Over here in the States, Rapido is well know for hyper detailed models, road name and road number specific details, scans of the prototypes, and the sound equipped models have sounds recorded from the prototypes. The high price tag is definitely worth it. FYI, their employees love what they are doing and are hilarious and it reflects in their videos and operating manuals.

Sam, I just heard the coolest thing ever about a model train manufacturer. Rápido Trains found out three years ago that all the classic Budd Railcars in Canada were about to be scrapped. They raised the money to buy and restore one. This sounds like a company with a true passion for trains. You can check it Out on KZbin.

As someone who has a few pieces of Rapido equipment (North American), I can honestly say that I am highly impressed by what they produce and that it is well worth the price. The manual is well worth a read as there is humor in the writing. Not sure if you have a digital system, but if you do it might be worth getting a decoder and seeing what happens. A Digitrax DZ126IN should fit and from personal experience, it does improve performance. Now back to installing sound on a brass Soo Line 4-6-2.

Just wait for the ‘it looks like Toby’ comments Sam 😉 And the mesh on the chimney is a spark arrester, some pannier tanks had them with a chimney gradually going outwards like American locos. They were put on panniers that did certain jobs (oil maybe? Correct me please 😂)

Fun fact - the pipe on the top of the roof is part of the safety valve. As these locomotives worked on/near roads and to prevent scaring nearby livestock, they installed the pipe to act as a silencer for when the safety valve blow off. It also has another purpose, in that when the steam passes through the pipe, it is diverted to the side tank to warm up the water (so that when injecting water, the pressure doesn't drop as quick).

Spectacular details and superb performance! 👌 Glad to see they've made prototypes for your market as well. I always thought they pulled 3 or 4 cars but i was quite amazed what this small 2 and 3 axle tram loco's could pull. Thanks for the review Sam and it was good to chat with you at Warley. We have seen a 'J70' fitted with a stay alive which would help with any dead frog points at slow speed. I'm sure we have a DCC 'J70' somewhere but it might be in the office which we can't get to at the moment but I'll certainly do some investigating on the crawl issue to see if it is made any better with a decoder. Very nice. Especially nice to see it comes un-numbered with multiple number plates. It's very frustrating when you want to buy duplicates for your layout but the manufacturer only makes one or two numbers, forcing you to find a way to remove the factory numbers without ruining the finish on the rest of the loco.

Hi Sam, great review. I can imagine it getting very hot in the cab! Although no J70's are preserved, a number of similar looking 0-4-0 vertical boiler tanks are preserved built by John Cockerill (Belgium), with at least 2 in operation on the UK. Would love to see one of these made as a model! Take care Sam👍

11:35 I'm going to predict right now that this model's going into the Top 5 at the end of this video. Edit: Glad to see I was right. That does look like an excellent model. Regarding the DCC chip, have you heard of train-o-matic? Jenny E. Kirk uses them a lot for her models, apparently they're made for several manufactuers. Perhaps that could work for the J70? Sorry, one last quick thing, just want to say thanks for taking the time to reply to everyone's comments. I'm sure you get a lot, and while we sometimes forget to say it, it's really nice and we appreciate it. Cheers.

Hi Sam, couple of bits for you. It’s pronounced Wisbeach not Wisbech. The J70s worked with Wisbech - Upwell tramway that supplied the farmers in the Fens with a railway to get the products to market. The Summer fruit trains were called the ‘grower special’. Passenger services stopped in 1920s however freight lasted into the 1960s. The J70s were also used on the Great Yarmouth tramway and few other Tram ways in East Anglia. There were replaced by 03 and 04 shunters. The village of Outwell on the Wisbech - Upwell line has a picture of J70 on the road sign. Reverend Awdry lived very close to line when we was the vicar of Emneth. It was at that church, where he wrote his railway story’s, that became Thomas the tank. Luckily one of Great Eastern coaches from the Wisbech line does survive is at the North Norfolk Railway. Would you please stick all the detail on the model, because it looks stunning, but also incomplete with our the doors. Lovely model, great review. Will have to buy one.

In my experience - if you can call it that because I just own two Rail Diesel Cars - Rapido is a pretty good manufacturer because the detail is amazing. Even small differences on different versions are taken into account. I think that is the point where you have to make the decision whether or not you want to pay a higher price. I do not remember what type of diesel engine it was but some time ago they had one engine that was considerably cheaper than the rest but that also meant small differences like e.g. different horn types were not taken into account.

The chains on the buffer beam are a GER Standard fitting, called Safety chains, the chains on the side of the loco would hold the skirting during maintenance. I have owned one of these for quite some time, and it's amazing what the locomotive can do, I have had this pulling an accurate 20+ Fruit van train on a layout (with some steep inclines) and it's performed faultlessly.
