I guess the deformed ball at 8:42 is meant to represent the fact that at the time both Prussia and Austria had possessions inside the German Confederation and outside of it. So by having the German Confederation both were part of it but also not as they had their eastern possessions. This lead to a lot of conflicts as the nationalist movements that wanted to build a German state wanted to include all German territories while Austria and Prussia didn’t want to split their territories. The conflict was resolved when Prussia beat Austria in the German brother war and forced Austria with all its belongings out of Germany while entire Prussia was included

What people never mention and don’t realize is that the Holy Roman Empire already had existed as a powerful (most powerful in Europe) and centralized empire for 800+ years before it gotten that broken up. The HRE only became disintegrated/splintered/broken-up (whatever you wanna call it) because of the religious war (30 years war) from 1618 to 1648, when all of Europe literally invaded Germany and used Germany as a battlefield to fight each other and subsequently effed it all up. That is the timeline those Germany maps show. And it’s that splintered with all the different colors due to one region having joined one factions, while the next one the other - often times being forced to do so by foreign states that have invaded Germany. And afterwards it stayed like that (to a lesser degree though) due to many regions having established strong relations with a Protestant state, while another one did so with a Catholic one/stayed loyal to the Emperor. While France just supported whatever faction/state would weaken that empire and its unity even more. 😅 Though it’s correct that the Empire already has been kind of federalized before all that, with some regions having been granted some level of autonomy - like the USA for example. But that federalism actually worked quite well before the 30 years war. That’s the context those maps and videos - such as this one - always fail to mention 😂. Thus those memes are actually really misleading and historically incorrect and it’s also wrong to generalize the whole existence of that empire (which lasted 1000 years or even more - depends how you count it) due to maps showcasing how splintered it has been during a freakin battle royal taking place on its territory 😂 it’s like showing a map of America, France, Russia or England during the civil wars with the holdings of all the different factions and then generalizing the existence of their whole country based on that. Calling it the most disgusting empire in history is really wild though. I mean they did protect and defend Europe against invaders quite often after all.

I think the HRE often gets a bad rep for being cursed and for bordergore. back in the medieval ages it really wasnt any more split then any of the other feudal kingdoms. Infact the HRE had for the longest time the best legal system and central authority out of all the feudal kingdoms. The reason why we give it a bad rep is that it practically didnt change and kept existing all the way into the 19th century of centralized nation states.
