@@JAYDOG1337A Exactly. The first one or two seasons he basically was "the villain", maybe even later. Remember for example when he was bullying Elliot until Cox punched him. That wasn't teaching, he wasn't making "hard decisions", he just bullied her for the lolz of it. I think the big turning point was the episode out of his perspective, were he learned that the hospital needs a villain around to unite everyone else.

I agree, and he was played so well. Ken Jenkins had the ability to hide so much complex emotion under an expression of grim resolution, that really made moments shine in a subtle way. I loved the moment when he told Cox his transplant patients had rabies.

I really respect that Kelso listened to JD and did the right thing even though it very clearly came at a heavy personal cost. He didn't blame JD but he also quite understandably didn't want to see his face right then and I get it.

The scenes where Kelso had JD's back and confronted Townshend is where I finally started to respect Dr Kelso.

Show always made a point to tell us that Kelso had to make tough decisions and that episode really highlighted it. You don't want to ever fire or upset an old friend, especially someone as nice as Townshead! But Townshead's outdated practices could hurt both patients and the hospital

+Strangething-And Townshead's/Townsie was definitely not a bad guy by any means so it hurt even more to lose him. However, he was extremely negligent with refusing to keep up with modern medicine practices to where if he was allowed to continue with any hospital unchecked, he would've eventually killed someone. Kelso realized this and realized just because Townshead is a good, sweet person who was also a good, dear friend of his, didn't mean that Townhead's actions should be automatically excused or if Kelso left him to his devices, that Townshead really could wind up killing or permanently disabling someone and he knew he had to do the right thing, no matter how painful it was. And while he refused to acknowledge it publicly, he knew JD was right and knew that JD was hurting just as much as he was with having Townshead let go.

You don't need to convince me. I was just mentioning that the later seasons make Kelso more sympathetic by explicitly stating that as the chief of medicine he often had to make hard/emotional decisions for the good of the hospital that would make him seem like the bad guy. I was just mentioning that this clip might be the earliest instance we see of Kelso doing so. Townshead was a close friend of Kelso so it probably killed him to fire him but Townshead's outdated practices could harm or kill patients and also open up the hospital to malpractice suits

Kelso is the best character in the series and honestly the most realistic. He doesn't take things to seriously all the time because if he did he would probably have a nervous breakdown from all the responsibility and peoples lives who depend on him.

I think that Dr. Townshends character reflects a lot of us older types who find it difficult to change and move with the times in our careers - we want to just keep doing things the way we were taught but ultimately time catches up with us and we have to realise that it's time to hang up the gloves. Personally, I have evolved enough to accept the changes in my career but eventually someone like Dr. Kelso is going to come to me and ask me to do something new and I'm just not going to be able to meet the task.

@@patrickmacken6046 I don't see it as unfair. He himself said he did not have the "energy" that Kelso had to learn new things. That tells me he doesn't really care for his patients but only himself. Kelso can be a dick but he still genuinely cares for every patient in the hospital.

@@AecherJace It's not strictly a "caring" thing. He's old. Part of getting as old as he was, is that your body slows down. There's never really any indication that Townsend didn't care for patients, but his age has caught up to him. He just can't keep up anymore.

Cox's point is that Ed needs to be continually striving to improve himself. Ed was not willing to try his hardest, which would have had ramifications on the patients around him. That's why Cox fired Ed.

To be fair, he fired Ed after Ed’s lethargy caught up with him. Ed had a good head start being naturally good at everything he needed to be, but later in the season the other interns catch up and even pass him and he doesn’t put in the effort to keep up so falls behind. THEN Dr. Cox fires him, which is what he was saying here, Ed may have been doing well at that exact moment but Dr. Cox tried to warn him he would be waiting for Ed to slip and it ended up happening.

On the Kelso part in the end. One would argue that its great to have friends who will be honest with you, because of course it is. But that doesnt make confronting them suck any less. Its always tough, especially in this case when people couldve died.

Most emotional moment is the 2nd episode with the Dr Cox's wife brother. They show it to you during all the episode and at the end, there is this phrase "don't you know where we are?" and we're at the cemetery for his funeral. This episode wet my eyes every time I watch it.

That Episode is really hard to Stomach. It shows a Character previously impervious to anything totally broken down. And most people can relate to that... most people lost a beloved person and know how the character of Dr. Cox felt (and the episode was very well written and the acting did its part).

Why is it in medical shows, the doctors always seem to hang the patient charts at the foot of the beds? When I worked in hospital we never, EVER did that. First off, our charts weren't designed to do such, but since those things are constantly updated with orders, lab reports, etc., the easiest way to provide all medical personnel quick access to all the charts is to have them all in a central location (the charting room). Also, since the information contained in the chart is sensitive patient information, it shouldn't be out where people that don't need to (or legally shouldn't) access the information could get their hands on it. It's always bugged me... does any real hospital actually treat patient charts in such a way?

I can't speak for every hospital but most charts at my local hospital are usually placed just outside the ward in a folder. It does make sense that the could be found on the bed though as if you're patient were to say have a medical or surgical consult you would want the chart nearby at all times.

Kelso was disliked by the rest of the doctors etc becuse he had to make tough decissions which were for the good of the hospital but made him unpopular. A similar sentiment was shared in an episode of UK comedy Waiting for God between Tom told Diana: Tom: 'every group needs a figure of hate at the top to unify the troops below, that's why the army had Sergent Majors. Remove the figure of hate and the troops will start to turn on each other and the unity is lost. Everyone needs a b'stard in their lives' Diana: 'won't I do?' Tom: 'You're over qualified'
