Progress on the little corner paddock. Managed all the strainers so all set for some stakes and net next week.

The bolster thing is available from Agridirect and it called a Staple Driver, took me a bit to find it so thought I would post this in case anyone else is looking Haven’t put a direct link as this sometimes gets comments blocked🤪👍

You really should get a decent mallet instead of whacking away with that toy claw hammer. It also damages the wood more. Keep up the good work.

Only a small farm but every credit for spending the time and money to do things properly. Many small farmers just throw anything together.

With the track and the work you did levelling it basically left the ground with little structure (loosened and softened) and the grass didn’t have time to bind it together better. Hindsight’s wonderful isn’t it! If the weather allows you could relevel in the spring (a slight slope might help drainage) but try not to use it next winter unless it’s frozen. Once the top has broken it won’t last long without a lot of expensive stone/drainage. Much easier when you can spread the tracks. Hopefully it would be more solid the year after.

id suggest buying four rims to mount mud tyres and swap them over as season changes.

Hey Tim. Great workday! Sorry about your finger. Ouch! Until your track dries out, and/or you put down some road bed gravel or some such, have you thought about purchasing a four wheeler (ATV) for small jobs, farm jaunts? A larger horsepower machine with a tow ball on it for a small trailer or a basket on the front fender area for your kit or chain saw? maybe get you out and back a little faster or better than the truck or tractor. And you get to buy a new piece of kit in the process!
@diyfarm

We decided on the truck instead of a quad as it was more suited to what we needed and a lot cheaper. We are fencing the next field tomorrow and will be using one in there so I’ll see how much better it does on the wet ground. I’d love one but if there is one thing that gets stolen quickly it’s quads! 👍
@FaenumVena
@FaenumVena 8 ай бұрын
Theyre referring to an ATV, not a quad, the kawasaki mule is the one i used to drive. Theyre very fun to drive and amazing work horses that can cope with some pretty knarly terrain. They can pull trailers and have a small flatbed in the back. If i remember right The Mule had the option of fold out back seats so it could seat 5 or have a bigger bed.
@diyfarm
@diyfarm 8 ай бұрын
@@FaenumVena thought that was a UTV? Think the comment was based on more of a quad type vehicle. But yes I also looked at Mule and Kubota but for our budget and need, a £2k truck made most sense.
@FaenumVena
@FaenumVena 8 ай бұрын
ATV just means all terain vehicle so it covers a variety of things. While a quad is great for getting a person around, a mule etc is better for getting stuff around and is much better suited to offroad muddy areas. its impressive what they can carry too.

For a short moment I thought you were going to explain that the staple driver handle took a shotgun cartridge blank and fired the staple into the post! With regard to your tyres - have you tried with a much lower PSI? I drive my Defender at 10psi on occasions and the M/T tyres get less clogged. I use an automatic tyre deflator preset to 10psi and I have another set set at 28psi . FWIW most off-road vehicles that roll tend to do it when going cross slope so I was gritting my teeth when you were driving down the field to install your first corner. Sliding sideways on a cross slope can suddenly drop your down-slope wheels to lower ground and you risk a roll - please be careful. 🙏🏻

Forgot to say - Off road tyres are a bit like politics or religion - everyone has a choice and preference. I’ve used Cooper Off-road tyres for 20+ years and have never had any complaints and only one puncture whilst towing on the A34! I always order online and get a set delivered to the village ‘blacksmith’ who fits/balances for a very reasonable price.

Yeah tyre pressure would definitely help, same was suggested about the tractor. Hopefully with some new tyres and a bit of stone down the track it will be useable again. 👍

@@diyfarm Do you have ballast fluid in the tractor tyres? I can’t imagine running my tractors without it, but I will admit I use mine for road-building and related heavy-pull tasks.

The insa turbo Dakars are great for the money Tim, I have them on my l200 as a full time shepherd and fencer….I priced them against the big names and I can buy two sets of the Dakars for the price of one set of BF Goodrich etc….I managed to get a set of 4 dakars on eBay for £399 delivered and a mate fitted them for me, although I will add I’m on steel rims and not on fancy alloys which does help keep the cost down. Have done heaps of road work with them, including a 15hr road trip with 10” plant trailer to collect a second hand post driver I bought and they’ve been good on the road, and have been very good off road…..a massive upgrade from all terrains for off road work for sure. I’ve had big names in the past and they’ve not been any better really, I found they started to perish before the tread wore and they weren’t any better off road either. There will always be the brand snobs but frankly, I’ve found them very good, regardless of price 👍🏻
