Just came here to say: I live in a major east coast US city and even taking into consideration the exchange rate… the prices as this “expensive” grocery store would be fabulous in the US! It’s seems like super quality foods, semi-prepared foods, good stuff for reasonable prices. In the last three months my grocery bill has increased 25%, when getting the same products. Ugh. Everything is out of reach level expensive in the states right now.

Honestly thinking of ordering my groceries from the UK and shipping them to the US. Would still probably be cheaper than shopping in the states hahaha

Uk has very good Supermarkets from bargain basement to high end quality… Marks & Spencer food is very good and reasonably priced…. Waitrose is part of John Lewis which is a high end brand …. Good for the special purchases that cannot be found elsewhere

Central Pennsylvania is bad too. For instance, a tiny cheap frozen pizza here is more than the high end one there. Sometimes they put berries on special 2 packages for $6-7. Everything is up.

We house-sit for friends sometimes, in a town where Waitrose is the main supermarket. Seriously, I can never spend less than 40 quid. Even if I went in for a pack of crisps, it would probably be 40 quid! They must have a "round it up to 40 quid" button at the till.

When I buy lots of fruits and I can't eat it all, I just cut it in pieces and freeze it. Then I just take it out of the freezer anytime I feel like having a smoothie. I enjoy having different fruits at hand to mix them up and create new smothie flavors. Thanks for showing us Waitrose's selection of vegetarian and vegan meals. I didn't know they make these. 👍

Hi Hannah I wonder how many people choose the supermarket most accessible to them. Often Waitrose stores are more accessible for elderly people without their own transport than the other supermarkets, which are more likely to be located on the edge of town. It also has a less frantic atmosphere, these are both valid considerations when choosing where to shop.

I live in both U.K. and USA. The nearest equivalent to Waitrose is not Trader Joe’s which is owned by Aldi, TJ’s ranges are really limited by comparison, it has far far fewer fresh or preservative free goods, and it’s not quite as upmarket. Whole Foods is a bit closer but by British standards it’s insanely expensive, it’s like shopping at Selfridges or Harrods Food Halls.

Hi, the store reflects the demographic of a big city with many customers having a higher priority on convenience than on price. Outside of cities the stores have a higher proportion of less prepared fresh meat, poultry, fish, fruit and vegetables mainly because of cost. Most UK stores will have a good variety of whole melons, but yes nectarines and peaches tend to come prepackaged unless you go to specialist retailers or markets. They used to be sold loose in supermarkets but that practice has died out possibly because of handling damage.

At first glance, I wouldn't say Waitrose is like Trader Joe's here in the US. It's more like Whole Foods, but everything is more pre-packaged and available on the shelf. Some things in Whole Foods are like that, but I like that you can pick and choose what you're going to eat that day and in the next few days and take them home and have them ready to eat.

Where we used to live, Waitrose was literally our nearest corner grocer! I wouldn't disagree with any of this video, but would add this: - Waitrose stocks a much larger selection of goods than it's competitors, at a wider price range - while Waitrose has it's "value" range, somehow many people see just the more expensive items not stocked in Tesco or Sainsbury, etc., and believe that applies across the store - it's own-brand chilled ready-meals are superior to those of other stores Please don't be put off by myths about Waitrose being "the expensive shop"; we have found items in there cheaper than ASDA.
@brianparker663
@brianparker663 2 жыл бұрын
You are spot on. It's also worth pointing out that the "essential" (value) products are of a very high standard with quality that often beats that of the recognised market leader. For me, Beanz Meanz Waitroze...not that other make! 😉

@carinedemolin7832 2 жыл бұрын
I worked for waitrose. It doesn't stock more products than the likes of asda or Tesco. But it stocks lines that you can't find in anywhere else. That's obviously due to its more upmarket customer base. For example they stock veal, something that's pretty hard to find in the UK. Side note, it's also not the most expensive, M&S is.
@malbecmikegrey996
@malbecmikegrey996 2 жыл бұрын
@@carinedemolin7832 Carine, I was actually trying to defend Waitrose against inaccurate claims on it's cost. Unsure about your distinction between "products" and"lines"; as an example, if you look at the range of tinned tuna, Tesco or Sainbury have the same things in various sizes. Waitrose has tins from a wider range of sources, at a wider variety of prices, as well as its standard "value" products. My one real moan about Waitrose concerns their siting; I now live in Weymouth, which has no Waitrose. Dorchester has TWO branches, although is a smaller town. Inexplicable.

I miss the stores in the UK. The bacon was absolutely wonderful compared with the US version. The prices are still great compared with a lot of places in the US. I fell in love with plain sparkling water in Scotland, but it’s actually hard to find in my area & it’s quite a bit more expensive than LaCroix or Bubly.

Loved the comment about the prices, live in Ireland so, have found when I was over in the summer, somethings are cheaper in the UK and other things were cheaper in Ireland.

HANNA!!! You can freeze avocados & lemons if you can't manage to get through them before they start to go bad. For the avocados cut them into wedges, remove the outer skin, put them on a plate lined with greaseproof paper (or kitchen roll) pop them into the freezer for about and hour and then you put them into a ziptop bag. You can use them for smoothies, avocado toast, or guacamole (stuff where you get a squidgy texture). Same goes for the lemons (except you don't have to take the skin off). You can cut them into rounds or wedges.

Love your videos! You are so good at the chat while shopping. Coming to the UK next year and watch your vlogs for inspiration! Blown away by the prices. We pay almost $7 for standard Aldi blueberries and $2 for strawberries is insanely cheap!

It's still pretty cheap but remember a lot of countries have to double the 2 pounds so it's more like $4

I recommend Booths, if you ever visit Cumbria (I'm certain it's related to Waitrose!). I don't find these prices too bad really. I love food treats because I don't go out drinking and I don't have any other vices, so I don't mind spending a pretty penny on food.

Coming from the US I wouldn’t say that this store reminds me of Trader Joe’s - TJ’s is owned by Aldi Nord and sells products at a low price. Also the aesthetic of Trader Joe’s is nothing like Waitrose. I would say the National US equivalent of this would be like a Whole Foods or a Wegmans (although Whole Foods only sells organic products). The price point and aesthetic match these options better. Waitrose also very much reminds me of a small NYC regional chain called Citarella.

The Store looks nice. I’ve have not been to the UK 🇬🇧 in long time, looks lovely. The woman has such pretty face. I was staying North of London and everything was closed when I got off work except the pubs and curry houses.

I have just pleasantly come across your channel and absolutely love it, and have binged so many videos over the last few days. I'm in Australia but when I was in London even I was surprised at the food prices. I'd say that in Australia these prices are absolutely double here. The one thing I have also noticed is all the packaging. Fruit and vegetables have their own packaging yet are placed in even more packaging. It's so interesting to observe the differences in places even though we are a commonwealth country and a prosperous one at that also. Thank you for sharing such cool content, I've really been enjoying it thoroughly. Love your walking tours so much also. xx
