As big as Nirvana was, I have to argue that Jimi Hendrix still blows everyone else from Washimgton away (And yes, he did have a band with him.). I mean many people still believe ( I am one.) that Jimi is the best electric guitar player who ever lived. His continuing influence more than 50 years after he died says something here. Besides, Hendrix was a huge influence on one of the major Grunge bands. Listen to Soundgarden and tell me Kim Thayll isn’t heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix.

I'm very happy to call the state of Washington my home. It's not quite California or New York, but it's had such a strong musical legacy of its own over the years, that I as a music-lover can't help feeling a special attachment to the local cultural atmosphere. Of course, Nirvana was obviously always going to be the one picked to represent us as the "most famous", and most people are aware of others from the grunge movement (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, Screaming Trees, Foo Fighters), but there's actually _so_ much more than that. Bing Crosby, Kenny Loggins, Jimi Hendrix, and Sir Mix-a-lot are all originally from here, as are the Sonics, the Ventures, Heart, Queensrÿche, Sunny Day Real Estate, the Presidents of the United States of America, Modest Mouse, Fleet Foxes, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. In addition to grunge, I'd be remiss if I forgot to acknowledge that many of the riot grrrl bands like Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney are from here. And Death Cab for Cutie is even from my hometown; I only live about a mile away from where they formed!

As a North Dakotan, born and raised, I totally agree with Bobby Vee and the Strangers(Originally called the Shadows). The original band name was come up with by Bobby himself the first night they performed just as they were about to go on at the Moorhead Armory on February 3 1959, taking the place of Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper who along with Buddy Holly perished early that morning in the plane crash that became known as "The Day the Music Died". I've noticed something interesting. The most popular bands from more rural states are more likely to play a more rebellious kind of music. The teenage Bottlerockets were more pop punk, but people who listen to that stuff think they're rebels. lol Then, you have Slipknot from Iowa and Kansas from Kansas. Yeah, its good rock, not necessarily something dark like Slipknot, but they were definitly the only rock and roll from Topeka at the time. Evanescence is another good example. They've even said during interviews that they wanted Little Rock to have at least one band with a better, more modern, sound. They described most of the music from there as "soft old people music." This isn't always the case of course, but Johnny Cash and the Charly Daniels Band were kind of bucking norms. Johnny Cash's music wasn't traditional at the time, and Charly Daniels was definitly progressive at the time, so it still checks out.

Even though this list is probably based on hard data, I feel like this does most of these states justice (3 Doors Down, lol)! This is so convenient for me because I'm currently working on a series of Spotify playlists called "A.M. (American Music)," and it's super fascinating seeing which state each U.S. band (and sometimes solo artist, too) is from. For instance, Panic! At the Disco is from Nevada (duh, heard the new song, lol), Paramore is from Tennessee, and My Chemical Romance? New Jersey, which actually kicks a lot of ass, musically. These are my top 10 favorite bands and where they're from, both stateside and internationally. Oasis (Manchester, England, UK) Filter (Cleveland, OH, USA) Nine Inch Nails (Cleveland, OH, USA) Chevelle (Grayslake, IL, USA) Catherine Wheel (Great Yarmouth, England, UK) Deftones (Sacramento, CA, USA) Green Day (East Bay, CA, USA) Placebo (London, England, UK) Curve (London, England, UK) Hum (Champaign, IL, USA) Neat, huh?

@@bobbyjayjohnson3460 I can dig the Grateful Dead being up there in the conversation. Yet, surprised cause it also could of easily been the "Eagles" "Van Halen" or "Metallica" too, if we're keeping it a buck! And I am just saying...

I’d say from Cali: Ratt, Van Halen, Megadeth etc. NY: Anthrax, Riot V, Blue Öyster Cult etc. PA: Halestorm, Cinderella etc MA: Boston, Aerosmith, Dream Theater. NJ: Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Overkill, Danger Danger (only because Ted Poley is great dude, he spends some of his days helping out at a local Animal Shelter there in Englewood).

The Ramones are one of the worlds top 10 bands. Not because they had the greatest songs or the most records sold. It’s because of their influence that when people heard them, they said I can do that. Bands like Metallica, anthrax, slayer, just about every punk band ever, such as Minor threat, Bad Brains, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Misfits, Danzig, Husker Du, Dead Kennedys, Green Day, Rage Against the Machine. The Ramones are responsible for an entire genre of music. Almost every rock band that started from 1978 to now will most likely consider the Ramones an influence. Lemmy loved them and covered their songs all the time.

@@TraceyAllen it’s the same with Led Zepplin, heck yeah do I hear similarities between Robert Plant’s vocals and some of the guys I listen to… going beyond that, I can’t help hearing similarities between the melodies of “Black Dog” and Kix’s “Lie like a rug”.

Yes, You've heard of George Thorogood and the destroyers, because you've heard "Bad to the Bone." Every time they show someone being rebellious in a movie, they play it in the soundtrack.

I had to look up the history of Aerosmith for this: there’s a NH connection in the formation of the band but the none of the members is actually from that state, and the band really started in the Boston area. So I would call a foul on the NH thing.

The best thing to come out of Nirvana was Dave Grolh. And there are arguments that can be made for Soundgarden, and pearljam instead.

I'm from Wisconsin. If anyone is going to put our state on the map musically speaking, it's a band out of Fon Du Lac, WI called The Astronomers. They're getting significant radio play on my local Top 40 radio station. With some of their songs, I'd say they sound like better versions of AJR (which I know you hate, but I hope that doesn't let you stop looking at their music). However, I'd say the one song I would suggest for you to look up from The Astronomers is "Hotel Rooms". It's big on my local radio station at the moment, and it sounds a lot less like AJR and with more of a pop-infused EDM vibe. Who knows? Maybe they'll take over the charts and take over the list in a few years. If you don't check it out, maybe I'll suggest it on the next reaction stream!
