I've been fishing for 20+ years only been bass fishing for 2 years now. With drop shots I learned a trick from some seasoned fisherman, you put a stopper on your line then a hook followed by another stopper so you can adjust the length of your leader for different situations.
@stephenrussell7171 Жыл бұрын
New to bass myself,what I do same effect,I use a longer leader and a sliding weight,another advantage if weight snags,you mostly get your lure and hook back.

I’ve done that many times and more often than not my bobber stops would slide either up or down while I lean into the bite, and the fish is gone🤷♂️, I like a direct knot to my hook on in a drop shot
@Stinkybeard3 ай бұрын
Yeah. I have done this before and I like the idea a lot but it will break your heart sooner or later. When you lean in to set the hook in a really hard part of the fishes mouth. The pressure will make the bobber stop slide down to the hook and it may not be enough to properly penetrate the fishes mouth. I lost 2 good ones that were barely hooked. Switched back and havent lost another dropshot fish.

I thoroughly enjoy all the opinions on drop shot fishing, everything from rods required, best line to use, reels, hooks and yes, I too have some of this modern day equipment. I learned many years ago all this fancy paraphernalia ain't necessarily needed. It was 1949 or 50, yup, i'm an old geezer. The knot that held my yellow cord onto my cane pole undid, undone, aw shucks, it came off. My grandfather cut me a length of black string from a spool he carried in his tackle box. He secured it to my cane pole and from there I was on my own. i fashioned a hook to the line, about a foot from the end. To the end I tied an old rusted 5/8 inch burr. I cut my garden worm in two, scewered it to the hook and slowly lowered it into the river about a yard or so off the bank. When I felt it hit bottom, i did my best to hold the outfit steady but occassionaly gave it a wobble to offset the wiggle. Holy Moly I hooked a bullhead. Reworming, I repeated the tactic and a nice river perch. I was the happiest six year old fishing in paradise the rest of the afternoon. Don't remember how many fish I caught but we took them all home and those we didn't fix for the frying pan, we burried in the rhubarb patch. I've been a confirmed dropshot fishing enthusiast ever since. 'keep on fishin'

I always use a drop shot to check depth within any lake or pond. Plus you get the idea of bottom structure of grass based on what you feel or reel back in with grass. I found that a dropshot 1 ½' bait to weight length is almost perfect if you have a Owner mosquito light hook or cover shot hook you'll get them everytime.

Just last weekend my two brothers and I had a little brotherly tournament between us and i was fishing about 24 in drop shot leader and I crushed em' . One brother was using the drop shot as well but with a shorter leader. I found the pattern and didn't tell him hahaha I won! Caught a bag, totalled out to 11.25 lbs. Had morning top water bite but settled in with the drop shot.

I like to start with a long leader first. Seems fish will have more time to look at a sinking worm and, it's gonna end up on the bottom anyway, it will just take a little longer to get there!

Standard practice when with a partner is to fish absolute different lures methods depths,it's a bit obvious but find out quicker what method is working best on the day,this works with fly fishing,imagine it works for all fishing sports.

I’m friends with Kota Kiriyama. He basically introduced the drop shot to the world finishing 4th at the 2000 BASSMasters Classic. He generally uses a longer leader the deeper he fishes. Like an inch every 1 1/2ft, 10” for 15ft, 20” in 30ft, 30” in 45

And I got good one this time year when post spawn spawn pre spawn time it’s perfect to run 3 inch 4 inch drop shot with a Berkeley gilly will make them mad got a 5.5 to 6 did not have scale I love short leader bc i like my bait close bottom as I love football jig and dragging bottom and with shorter leader it just reminds me of that… thanks for tips

Mike Iconelli recommended (in a video) using a baited jig head for a weight (think ned bait) if they are biting your weight. I was thinking of trying a double-baited (above the weight) drop shot to see if it makes a difference. Never seen anyone doing that. Have you tried that? When I fished a higher baited drop shot I was catching more large pan fish in a local pond. I guess it gets it up into their range. Keep up the great vids. I have still not caught anything on a floating work (BTW).

The ol drop dead ned rig. It does work to kill two birds with one stone on occasion. As you said ned rig as the weight on your drop shot
@mikegardiner39342 жыл бұрын
yep, and if you’re going to use ned as bottom weight, I’d suggest one of the EWG ned heads, cause you can make weedless. 👍

I bought some small tungsten weights that have a small loop wire on them. You slide these on you hook then the worm. Haven't tried them yet , but they should be deadly.

Thanks Tyler. I’ve always wondered about leader length for the bank angler vs someone in a boat. With the angle of the bank/shoreline vs your line (especially if you have any slack), would a longer leader result in your worm dragging on the bottom? Just seems like a drop shot works better when fished vertically (like from a boat).
@robertbrost77772 жыл бұрын
It may Robert but, I have caught over 100 bass on the drop shot from the bank. I don't own a boat so, I'm limited to the bank. A longer leader would do just the opposite I believe, it would stay further off of the bottom.

Great video, i’ve been watching your videos and I’m still a little confused a lot of people talk about nose hooking a drop shot beat but as watching you in this video you seem to have a rather long shank cook with your worm could you do a video on drop shot hook sizes and went to change sizes
@robertbrost77772 жыл бұрын
A lot of ppl here say to nose hook the bait so it doesn't twist the line as badly when you reel it in to make the next cast. I haven't found that hooking the bait from bottom up through the top 1/4" from the end has caused me ANY line twist. Besides, when you retrieve the bait and take it out of the water, the worm spinning a little cures the problem anyway!

I have a stupid question when rigging your drop shot how do tie the hook on, for instance do you fold your line and run it thru eye of hook then separate and pull tight or do you tie hook first and then add your weight on with another line 🤷. I want to try this in a pond that has grass on the bottom
@AGuyNamedRicky2 жыл бұрын
It’s going to be in your best interest to tie a Palomar knot and then run the tag end through the eye of the hook (front to back) once that tag is weighted it will help the hooks point face upward. Using another line will cock the hook to one side

Hey Tyler great video the ones you’ve been doing on drop shot has helped me big time. One trick I’ve been trying and playing with is to make my later 2 1/2 feet long and when I put on my weight I slide it up or down till I find out what the fish want. Then I will cut the liter excess off by doing this I don’t have to re-tie the whole set up as often. I may start out with a 4 inch length then slide the weight down to 8 inch and so on.
