I'm heartbroken, with the same questions. How could anyone do this when there are places to take them if they are no longer wanted, or able to care for them? Having said that, two guinea pigs in that disgustingly filthy cage didn't happen over night, they have been neglected prior to this happening. Just an idea… can you guys put signs around where pigs are often dumped that says something like “please call this number if you are dumping an animal so we can get it before it succumbs to the outside elements” (or something like that) and then have a designated number for these overnight dumps (or any dumps) that happen?

I'm sorry, Saskia. I used to work at an animal shelter. I saw stuff like this more often than I want to admit. Focus on the piggie who made it. He will be loved and well taken care of from now on. There is no greater joy than watching a sad, scared animal learn to be happy. His first popcorn will prove that what you do is worth it. You know The Starfish Story, right? ".... it made a difference to that one." Piggies are inadvertently the reason I don't work at the animal shelter anymore. A pair of abandoned pigs were brought to the shelter. Poor pigs were very thin. I went to get them Vitamin C tablets, which were kept in the controlled drug cabinet . I was fired for opening the cabinet because I "didn't have verbal permission" to do so. I was more concerned for the piggie's health than protocol. I don't have much regret for my decision. I have a lot anger for the shelter manager though.

We found one of our pigs left on the side of the road in an old store cage early one morning. He's been a part of our family now for 2 years and is a very sweet guy. We also have a big C&C cage for him and his friend we brought home soon after. There is a local shelter that takes in guinea pigs and there is also a rescue specifically for pigs around here too. I'm not sure why that wasn't an option instead of leaving him on the side of the road. You're videos have helped us to be the best piggie parents we can be, thank you for all that you do to educate. Also thank you for taking such good care of the piggies. I'm going to go love on our pigs a bit after this.

Thank you so much for the sweet little guy they are full of so much love ❤️ and god bless you for giving him the unconditional love that he so desperately needed, I also in 2011 took in two sweet little boy and a old male to mouths later i was at a farmer’s market and the pet store that I knew had 12 baby guinea pigs that each time they would come out of the hide there was about 3 feet and i would start a piggy train it was so cute and seen the littlest piggy it had the same colors as Harley the older boy I could tell that it was a runt of the litter and I took her home with me she had her on cage right next to my bed and boys cages close to my bed her name become Squeakers And she got the boys that were abused to squeak again and the younger robot was a year old and I named him sweety i was adorable to give Harley beautiful loving home for a little over a year before he passed away lung infection my guinea pig veterinarian she gave him antibiotics and it would keep coming back, and i still miss him my sweety lived for seven years right next to squeakers till I had to take him in my arms and tell him that it’s going to be ok and that he was going to fall sleep in my arms and go over the rainbow 🌈 bridge to heaven with the outer guinea pigs that are all ready there and the next year my little squeakers was seven and she had what looked like to be a stroke she could not get to her water bottle so that night in my queen bed i took her favorite soft blanket that she would pull into the side of her cage and and made her one hide since she was little but i would put the blanket on top of her cage and I pull the corner of of her blanket in through the wire six inches high and 12 inches and fold it underneath, I took her blanket and folded it and round and round and put her in the center because she she would try to walk and her left side little foot would go right out from underneath her and she would fall over the good thing was she didn’t try to get out of the blanket that I fixed for her i surrendered feed her water and kreccare i couldn’t sleep that night I cuddle up and her till the morning and i took her to my veterinarian to hold her in my arms and tell her that I was going to be okay that she would be fall sleep in my arms and going over the rainbow 🌈 bridge and going to heaven to be with all the other guunea pigs in heaven and that is we’re I’m going to go when it’s my time when I left the veterinarian with my my squeakers I look up at the sky and there was a beautiful rainbow 🌈

That’s heartbreaking. I watched this while laying next to one of our adopted dogs. We couldn’t keep our guinea pigs because I was having asthma attacks when I cleaned their habitat, but we made sure they went to a good home. We love them so much!

The living conditions in which my first guinea pig used to live in were very similar to this, thankfully we rescued you him! My other guinea pig was brought to a pet ER for a fractured hip and his teeth were knocked off at the base. They called a shelter because they found out he had been thrown against the wall on multiple occasions, the las time he just didn’t get back up. Guinea pigs are NOT starter pets!!!!!

I had to take a piggie home from work yesterday when it was 27°F, and I made sure he was in a carrier with a (safe) heat source, warm blanket, and the carrier was covered. Hi Laura - a lot of rescuers suffer from ptsd from the shocking situations they witnessed and were involved in and the daily suffering we see caring for sick animals and seeing the deteriorate before our eyes (we cannot save them all) I often wondered if therapy would be a great addition to keep our mental health in check. I had a baby sitter that bought my kids 6 guinnea pigs for while they were at their house and after she was fired she dropped them all off in 1 small cage left them outside. So i didnt find them til morning and the cage looked alot like this nasty one. I brought the cage and all 6 guineas inside and called animal control and they told me that since i had brought them inside i took responsibility for them and that the baby sitter was not going to be held accountable. Ontop of that because i took them in i would need to pay a fee for them to take the guinea pigs into custody or rehe them myself. We ended up keeping them for a long while before i could find a home willing to take them all and not split them up. I felt they had already been through enough and seperating them would just be the topper for them. I just dont understand how some ppl can be so cruel. Its absolutely heartbreaking! You do amazing work and these guineas are so lucky to have someone like saskia that actually cares and loves these amazing little critters!

From what i saw of the deceased guinea pig was a naken guinea pig and they are more exposed to cold than guinea pigs with hair. I think that is one of the reasons he/she didn't survive. He/she had none shield for the cold. I am so relieved his/her mate survived. Thanks so much for your amazing work ❤Rip little angel ❤❤

This is soooo sad. People can be so selfish, so heartless, so cruel. I'm thinking this could have been parents who bought them for their kids who lost interest in them and the parents expected the kids to take full responsibility. They wanted no part in caring for the pigs and just left it to their young children and when the parents decided they were sick of their kids bedroom smelling, because their kids weren't cleaning the cage or caring for their guinea pigs. They dumped them in freezing weather! The conditions those poor babies were in. If you have someone who can be up from dusk till dawn as security on your property, because You are becoming so popular now that I fear this will continue to happen, unless you have someone you can trust and count on to volunteer to work nights on your property to watch the property for any trespassers / dumpers.. My heart goes out to the poor pig who suffered and froze to death and to all of you who have to deal with this and will sadly continue to deal with stuff like this. Maybe surveillance camera's and lights with sensors too? IDK Saskia. I feel like you REALLY need security as you grow more and more popular. I will be able to make bigger monthly donations from next month on. It's all I can do. I'm going to cuddle my pigs now and tell them how much I love them. This is so heartbreaking. I do hope you are otherwise having a nice time right now with Gabe's family in Chicago, and are being careful not to overdo it. I hope you are able to relax as well as catching up with family. I'm really sorry for how much all of you at the rescue have to deal with this. Sorry for length.🌻🐹🌈🌹

@@tammylines2779 Hi Tammy. yes this broke my heart too. An had me wanting to say a lot of things but I instead took a deep breath and thought about what all could have caused this situation. In no way excusing it. I had some people at a feed store trying to basically tell me I'm stupid for thinking guinea pigs can't survive in the cold. They brought up how guinea pigs live in the wild and that they can survive. I was trying to explain to them that domesticated guinea pigs can't live like the ones in the wild, but they just continued to act like I don't know what I'm talking about. I think the people thought that putting a little blanket over it would be enough, so sad. 💯😢💔

I am truly appalled by the negligence of these poor piggies. I believe that God made animals first and its our job to take care of them not hurt them. I'm so very sorry for the baby who passed. I'm so glad one of them made it. I love you guys. Thank you for you guys hard work.

People are doing this, meanwhile I'm buying a third fleece liner for my pigs because we're having some unexpected snow. I can't stress this enough, they CANNOT tolerate cold weather. Even less when it's wet. Mine are inside and warm, but they're sensitive. I can't believe someone would leave them like that, and *especially* to a skinny pig!

I’m just seeing this now. I can not described how sad I am seeing this. It really tears at my soul. I can not understand for one minute how people could be this cruel to a defenseless little animal? It’s beyond shocking. These people deserve any karma coming to them. But, I’m so happy you guys were able to save one and he’s probably happy and healthy now. I only have two guys right now, but every time I see any of your posts, I wish I was in LA and able to adopt them. I love the piggies and think you all do so well with taking care of them and getting them out for adoption. They are kind lil creatures who need loving and homes. And you help do that. Bless you for all you do 💜
