The Nightingale is one of the best movies of 2019, but it's also the most horrifying. It depicts brutal acts, vividly and should not be watched by anyone with a weak stomach. That said, it handles this sensitive material very respectively and ends up being one of the more impressive films of 2019. From Jennifer Kent, the writer and director of The Babadook, The Nightingale is a story of revenge taking place in the wilds of Tasmania during a time when English colonist were warring and nearly eliminating the local native populations.
While there is certainly stark examples of black and white morality in The Nightingale, there's also every shade of grey imaginable as ever character in the film makes questionable decisions. The morality of these decisions often weights on decisions made by others making The Nightingale one of the more thought provoking films of the year. Additionally, it happens to be well written, produced, directed and acted.

Saw this at our indie theater with a group and we were all floored. The Aboriginal supporting actor was amazing. On a related note, Robert Eggers in a recent interview said that he, Ari Aster and Jennifer Kent discussed how mixing or bending genres makes sense for the future of film making. Looks like we’re in good hands.

I watched this at the international film festival in Melbourne having no idea about anything except who made it and that it was an historical movie. So zero warnings which in hindsight was not a bad thing but I don't think I've been so shocked by a movie before. It did feel like I'd been punched but I also couldn't stop watching. The horror mixed with the beauty of the landscape was spellbinding. Me and my friend stayed seated well after the credits had finished. Neither of us could stop crying, even out in the street. It took quite a while to shake. I don't think I remember any movie ever affecting me that much. I never need to see it again but at the same time I'm so glad I watched it once. I grew up in Tasmania, I think this made it feel very close to home.

I had the exact same notion as you did with this one. I sorta braced myself for some horrific stuff in this and luckily my cherry had been popped a long time ago with Martyrs and Irreverible just as you compared, and was expecting the same intensity. I love those movies too, but luckily this one was way more subtle than I expected and handled violence very tastefully and thoughtfully. I liked how they pretty much introduce the worst of it in the first act and becomes more of a meditation on violence, and dialed down rather quickly afterward which is honestly pretty refreshing. It doesn't end in some wild bloodbath like most movies would opt for. In my opinion, this movie felt more like reading a Cormac McCarthy novel where violence is just part of the world and eventually you just have to accept it for what it is. I hope more movies like this are made, not nearly enough of them, and I'm kicking myself for not watching it sooner. Definitely didn't break me or anything, I guess my skin is pretty tough when it comes to this subject matter. All in all, this is a pretty heartfelt story that deserves hella praise.

A Serbian Film bothered me quite a bit. Martyrs (French 2008 version) is intense, but amazing. Like you said, both of those movies are more brutal than The Nightingale. I thought it was very brutal, yet extremely realistic. Overall, a really fantastic film that I would highly recommend if you can handle the brutal violence and depiction of sexual assault. I agree with your trigger warning. I vocally yelled out in one particular scene near the beginning because it was quite difficult to watch. The cinematography is beautiful. The performances, especially by the lead actress are absolutely phenomenonal!! Her depiction (especially in her face) of trauma throughout the film is raw and powerful. I was blown away! Fantastic review Darren! I love these individual reviews!!! Thank you to all the wonderful Patreon members for all you do!!! *Don't go into it thinking it is like The Babadook. This is a VERY different film. Actually, they both serve as a metaphor for something so in that sense they are similar.

I haven’t seen this movie yet but, given the trend of how historical films have been in the past 3-5yrs- I’ve already seen it a dozen times. It’s a bit ridiculous and sad at this point. The worst part is, for people like the millennial couple next door to me, movies like this comprise the overwhelming bulk of their “historical” knowledge. Also, never watch “Irreversible”- ever. That title is perfect for that movie. Still haunts me years later.

I feel like A Serbian Film, though it has more disturbing imagery, has a bit less visceral emotion attached to it.
