Might do the rest later to see where I differ, but from 2000, I'd probably have Sing When You're Winning by Robbie Williams for August 2000 (a huge deal in the UK/Australia), Relationship of Command by At the Drive-In for September 2000, and Since I Left You by The Avalanches in November 2000 which in particular is a no-brainer imo. Hybrid Theory over Kid A is debatable (I think Hybrid Theory is a bit more in the popular consciousness) and the O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack for December 2000 is a maybe. Amnesiac's weird in that most sources outside of Wikipedia say it was released in June 2001 (and even Wikipedia's 'list of albums released in 2001' gives it as June). If so, Lateralus by Tool is an easy shoe-in for May 2001 (and if Amnesiac is May 2001, I think it's close). Amnesiac then takes June. August is probably Vespertine over Iowa but it's not a clear-cut choice, October 2001 is also not easy, but I'd probably go Fever by Kylie Minogue over the Ja Rule (again, probably my Ausralianness coming in here). Don't think I can argue for any change for 2002, although part of me wants () by Sigur Ros over the Foo Fighters for October, but I think that can only apply in internet niches. 2003 probably Quebec by Ween over Warren Zevon for August. Don't think there are any others. 2004 has some tough calls. First Confessions by Usher came out the same month as Madvillainy which was clearly bigger at the time and I'd imagine outside of music nerd circles more familiar, but Madvillainy is THE underground rap album so it's a close call. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. April has Franz Ferdinand's self-titled competing with Modest Mouse. From what I gather, Modest Mouse is more iconic in the US and Franz Ferdinand is more iconic in most other places. June has Hot Fuss by the Killers against the MCR album. I think I'd go Hot Fuss by a hair. October 2004 should realistically probably go to Back to Bedlam by James Blunt but I completely understand why you wouldn't want to go with that. Still Not Gettin' Any by Simple Plan is another huge but derided album from that month. November you go Encore over Mmm Food which is the cult classic vs. more popular but polarizing album but I think I'd also go Encore. January 2005 there's a strong case for The Documentary by The Game over LCD Soundsystem's self-titled, although it's probably a popularity at the time vs. cult status and staying power. February has Silent Alarm by Bloc Party and Frances the Mute by The Mars Volta, and I think I'd take either over a lesser Jennifer Lopez album outside her popularity peak, maybe Wolfmother's self-titled over the Fiona Apple for October (but it was only released in Australia at the time). 2006: Surely Loose by Nelly Furtado over the Three Days Grace album. B'Day by Beyonce seems to be a September release? That leaves August looking very difficult. Maybe Back to Basics by Christina Aguilera for popularity reasons, but you could go maybe Modern Times by Bob Dylan for a more critical darling? Justin Timberlake probably wins September over Beyonce. October has Back to Black by Amy Winehouse competing with The Black Parade which is very difficult to split. Either answer works. 2007: Maybe Good Girl Gone Bad by Rihanna over the Linkin Park and either one of Cross by Justice or Riot! by Paramore over Icky Thump by The White Stripes. Almost certainly Alive 2007 by Daft Punk over the Alicia Keys. 2008: March is difficult. Tempted to go with Mail on Sunday by Flo Rida to be honest, mostly on the strength of Low, but I like the Meshuggah pick, even if it's a bit niche. Crystal Castles' self-titled has a big cult following there too as well as In Ghost Colours by Cut Copy. May maybe We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.by Jason Miraz over Usher. Also In Silico by Pendulum is a big Drum n Bass album. One of the Boys by Katy Perry appears to be a June release and probably loses to Viva La Vida by Coldplay narrowly. July then is pretty weak but probably goes to Breakout by Miley Cyrus. November is stacked and I think there's a case for both I Am Sasha Fierce by Beyonce or 808s and Heartbreak by Kanye West but Fearless is massive too. I'd lean towards Kanye for its influence. Maybe Oracular Spectacular by MGMT has a case over 19 by Adele too for January. 2009: Not sure if Crack the Skye by Mastodon has a case over Born Like This by MF DOOM, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Pheonix has a case over Relapse by Eminem, maybe The Fame Monster by Lady Gaga over Rated R but that's often considered an EP.

OK so, what month did the late 90s end musically, and which month did the early 2010s begin musically? I'd pretty much have to say the 2000s officially got their sound in maybe November 2002, then got some 2010s electro-pop in 2006 and some softer "swooshier" (worst non-word ever) indie-pop sounds in 2008. January 2008 gave us ADELE, Feb 2008 gave us Beach House which led to some 2010s indie sounds. Full 2000s sounds: 2002-2007. Although 90s Gen-X would say "the true 90s sounds were 1992-1996 (the boy band thing sucked)". Anyway, 21st century decades never really get a discussion on these things like best/worst year and it makes me curious.
