It's so strange, I'm married now with the most lovable dude ever, and we are making a home in Amsterdam; but no matter how moved on I feel, the thought of returning to my childhood town terrifies me. The past is so much easier to cope with when you run from it, and I hope that you find KZbin as a nice outlet to come to terms with the past in a healthy way.

This is the reason why I’m leaving the Jehovah’s Witnesses as well. I don’t believe in this religion, or the Bible for that matter, and I just don’t fit into it. I want to be my own person and live a life I’m satisfied with, a life I want to live. I want to see what more there is for in this world. I can’t leave yet as I’m only sixteen at the moment (Seventeen in September), but once I’m old enough to get out, I will. It’s nice to hear from others who’ve chosen to leave it as well. It was obviously a challenge for you, and I know I’ll face challenges too, but now I know that there is a life past it. Also, just want everyone to know that though I personally don’t believe in the Bible nor the JW religion, I have nothing against those that do. You guys do you and life the life that makes you happy. Just don’t hurt anyone in the process.

@@anastasiashpyt overall better, I think. When the pandemic hit and JW meetings were moved to zoom, my parents finally stopped forcing me to attend them, so I was finally able to get out of it. And not long after that, I got a new job and was at last able to move out. I’m nearly 20 now, have my own space, a loving girlfriend, and the freedom to make my own decisions. Of course not everything is perfect- The company I work for doesn’t seem to have a future, my depression has gotten worse and zapped away my will to live, and of course there’s also the ongoing pandemic that’s killing thousands (along with my hope for humanity). But hopefully those will get better too, with time.

I grew up in a sincerely religious family. I grew up believing that, and from fairly early on, discovering I had gay feelings. -- It is not easy being a teen, having a religious faith, and talking to other people. They may not realize how or why it is meaningful to you, and at the time, it is often hard for you to articulate how and why it's meaningful to you. -- At the same time, it is also important for someone to be able to say, hey, look, enjoy the good things of life and don't let them pass you by, in your zeal to be good and faithful. We often need to realize there is more to life than what we were taught in religion. -- One of my aunts, a few years ago, spent a long time talking about her vacation. But instead of what a good time she had, how fun it was, what great things she got to do, she spent the entire email focused on religion. Absolutely everything had to be focused on religion. Not meeting new people, not laughing at a comedy routine she saw, the beautiful natural landscapes, not even getting to visit with her kids and grandkids and whoever. I feel sure that is not what God would want; he'd want her to enjoy all those good things too, to have perspective about what place religious faith has in our life, rather than have it be all-encompassing to the point there was nothing else in her life. And to me, it meant she was trying to show just how virtuous and righteous she was. Ooh, look what a good Christian I am. -- I call her the anti-aunt, because she got to where she was sending so many negatives about anything and everything, including, oh, she thought "the gays" had an "agenda" to "take over our schools" (and turn all the kids gay, apparently). -- Again, the wrong way for her to look at it. I was terribly let down and hurt by my church experience when my grandmother was ill and passed away. The support I needed just was not there. These days, I am mostly non-practicing. I still pray, but I have doubts and anger and deep hurt at it all. -- Yet I know that my religious faith held deep meaning for me, and for many people, it still does. Including gay / queer folks. I just think that it is important sometimes for us to be confronted by other viewpoints and maybe see if we are buying into something that is man-made, versus what of it is true or from whatever God is or might be, if there is a God, or if God is like I was taught or is perhaps bigger or at least different. Because I was taught God is love, and yet also taught that it was wrong to be gay. Except, well, I ahad gay feelings, I am gay. Hard to reconcile that, when what you fee seems right to you, and yet you've been taught you aren't supposed to be like that. I had to realize some or much of what I'd been taught might be wrong, untrue. Being asked as a teen why you/d rather ego out and evangelize when you could be doing normal teen stuff, is an important question. It is OK for it to have more than one answer, sincerely. /s fine to have faith and want to help others. that's a good thing. but it is also fine to live a normal life and not let the good things in life passs you by. I let too much pass me by, in trying to be the perfect Christian boy. I wish I had understood this at any point in my preteens and teens and into college age. Instead, I missed out on a lot, and that was not a good or healthy spiritual or physical thing for a young guy, gay or otherwise.

Nice story. A few days ago 2 young female JWs knocked on my door here in London. We had a great conversation in which I told them about my family’s perspective, in which the key words are diversity and education rather than Jehovah and the bible. Was able to get across than we were able to raise our children to be good people without the bible. My family consists of Buddhist, Muslim, Church of England and atheists. They were lovely girls and one of them seemed genuinely happy with her decision to commit to JWs. Suppose she’ll be okay til someone she loves wants to leave...

Yup. Someone asked you what YOU thought, felt... Growing up a JW, you're always told how to think, feel, act. Your thinking must be "in alignment" with what Jehovah wants. You're taught to answer according to what it says in the paragraph. You're turned into a little parrot, and if you don't parrot right, you stand to lose a lot. How life-changing when, at the age of fifteen, someone asks you a question that makes you think for yourself.

I was serving a mormon mission in El Salvador and my companion and I were doing morning scripture study when JW's came to our door. It was a boy and his father and the kid was surprised to see these mormon guys and didn't know what to say. It was funny.

No matter how we interpret the Bible and how correct we believe we are, the JW's are not going to change their view on homosexuality. One reason being on their believe of the anointed 144000 people who are going to heaven. So whatever these remaining anointed say the JW's followers will believe. A big part of their religion's believe is based on what these anointed say which nobody can prove.

Your right each of us have at least 1 or 2 doors we have knocked that made us think a little after leaving that house. I remember I was with a circuit overseer once and we went to a house that I guess a brother had told him that he was anti JW. So, we went and he thought I was his daughter and was like I can see she is bored and would rather be doing something else than be with you here on my door step. Either way he was partially right since I was tired it was during my Regular pioneer run yay me. So his like no she is fine she is just trying to serve Jehovah more and he never corrected him calling me his daughter that was the weird thing I figured he would have. Either way the guy made a few point since he believed that his Church was the Truth just like we at the time believed that our Organization was the truth and so he said that one of us has to be right and that we must be wrong if he is right and that he must be wrong if we are right and that in the end it doesn't matter since we wont know till the end comes to our body. So I was pretty shocked and it did make me think about other options or at least of other religions that think they also have the truth even if it was just for a few minutes its still something I remember.

Now that you left the organization i pray you actually do find God and accept what his son did on the cross so your sins can be forgiven. Sometimes when we are hurt by man we tend to take it out on God when he had nothing to do with it and if we studied the scriptures enough for ourselves we would have never been sucked up into a lie.
