Brickey, don’t get me wrong I absolutely love this random content. So please don’t stop. However, as I watch this, I’ve realized that for as many times I’ve been to the parks, I’ve already blocked out these gates from my mind. More than half of the gates you showed, I reacted with, “Oh, I forgot that that was there!” So, maybe Disney isn’t all that unsuccessful with hiding these gates? Still fun to ponder though! ❤

Interesting point! Another possible explanation for why we block them out of our minds isn't because they're inobtrusive, but because they are so ugly! 😂 Either way, Brickey makes a great point that I never really considered before: a good gate does double duty. Not only does a good gate serve its primary function of serving as an egress point, it also serves to enhance the area it is in, perhaps even becoming a popular destination in its own right.

I think the reason the exit gates at DCA are per fire dept and fire truck requirements in 2001 whereas the gates in DL are likely due to exit requirements from 1955. Just a thought.

I remember being reaaaally turned off by DCA when it first opened, I felt like it was not on the same level as DL (I was 15-16 yo and pretty biased btw haha) and it has taken me a while to warm up to DCA. My husband on the other hand immediately loved it and say he prefers it over DL. On other news as a born and raised Mexican, living in Mexico I declare your pronunciation of Quinceañera was correct. Brickey, you always do a fantastic job on your deep dive into the designs of the parks. One little detail. Mary Blair designed the interiors of It's a Small World, with Alice Davis Creating the multitude of ethnic Costumes for the Dolls. It was Rolly Crump who actually designed the exterior facade for the the attraction as he designed the Tower of the Four Winds at the 1964 Worlds Fair as Walt asked him to create the exterior facade with a clock tower for Disneyland; so it could have something like the Glockenspiel in Germany. Which Walt was rather fond of in many of his European visits.

Some of the exit point gates give me a feeling and look of old Hollywood homes that are gated. Those old mansion gates in Hollywood that gave people their privacy. Maybe I'm grasping at straws here? But I have seen some places in Hollywood that have a very similar look. Excellent content as always, Brickey!!

12:33 You’re totally right! DCA feels so much more compact than Disneyland, I never realized it. Disneyland has so many more explorable nooks and crannies to facades and cast exits that it “feels” bigger than it is. Main Street and the Autopia store areas are great examples of this.

Those windbreak trees off Main Street pre-date Disneyland. Those were there as wind breaks to the original orange grove and they decided to keep them to serve as a wind break, as you said, and to give more greenery to the Jungle Cruise which is right there.

It's not technically a gate out of the park, but my favorite is the waterfall hiding the storage building for the Fantasmic barges (and I assume maintenance for the rafts?). The average guest will have no idea it's there. There's just a railroad bridge surrounded by dozens of little details that make the guest feel like they're out in the wilderness.

Interesting discussion. When I took my daughters to Disneyland just as DCA had opened, we had no intention of going there. But a Disney network engineer behind us in line heard our quehando (complaining) and decided to give us there of his daily tickets. So we got in there. And my teenage daughters designated the park "California Lame Adventure". It's better now, but still not nearly as well designed as the original DL. Like I said, this is an interesting discussion.

04:25 He's got it wrong. Those trees were wind breaker trees for the Orange Groves. They're original trees that were there Before the park that Walt Never removed. Not only that but the two big palm trees in Adventure Land ate also. This is coming from a Cast Member who currently works at Disneyland as a Skipper. :)

Lol…. SO many different thoughts. I divide the access points into 3 main categories. Employee walking access to backstage areas, Entry points for driving on site at night for work vehicles (including cranes and lifts) and Parade loop access points for float (ands other driving) access. I will admit that DCA was a little more rushed than DL and under a more restrictive budget so in making the lands more efficient for guests (more on stage vs backstage space) it doesn’t bury the access points as deeply into the story. I will say that especially in Tokyo (where it seems more of my projects have been recently), it seems they have taken more time with details like this and tried to camouflage or bury the driving access portals a little deeper into visually concealed areas. Especially for the Parade units, it is a brilliantly designed loop that lets them stage just outside the parade building then feeds them back in the other side backstage. Ultimately, it’s really just about where you want to put the money.

When DCA was created, Bob Weiss stated that each "land" has 6 acres for expansion purposes. This is one reason for the large fences.

pretty true when you just look at the doors. but the focus on some of the doors while walking around DCA just isn't there because you don't have a reason to look at them. your focus is firmly planted to other grand areas. if some of the DCA doors were decorated elaborately, then they would look even worse than masked with their basic design. i would think this part is obvious. disneyland, with it's small space, has no choice that to try to hide doors the best they can. but no matter what they do, they are still an obvious door to backstage.

DCA was built with budget cuts and speard by a retail executive. So expectations to compare it to Disneyland is futile. While DCA has improved, you've pointed out it major flaws that are still apparent. I'm sure in another ten or twenty years from now more improvements will change the parks set up, but all in all the conception of DCA was short sighted and not at approached like the original designers of Disneyland!

I’m surprised you said small world had the ugliest exit gates in DL. I would say the two you pass as you transition from Fantasyland to Frontierland would take that title. Those are two huge ugly wooden gates that with doors that make a lot of noise.

The most offensive thing is that it exists at all. Poorly planned, not little kid friendly, and no Disney magic. It's just a bunch of streets with some of the lamest, trite rides ever--like the Little Mermaid and Monsters, Inc. rides that look so cheaply made (and poorly lit) that you can see the mechanisms. Plus, everything is so spread out that all you really do is walk around and wait. We went this past June and won't be going back. My 5 yr old lasted about 2 hrs before wanting to park hop back to real Disney.

Marvel town is such a fail. I can not think of one single thing about avengers campus that’s a win. Maybe pym kitchen?? The concept definitely is unique. But everything else is just awful. Wasted space to an absolutely awful Spider-Man attraction to a lame bar area to the battle show that nobody can see to the doctor strange show that’s a total mess unless you are in the very front to the ridiculous Spider-Man show that’s too short and very hard to see. I have back and fourth with david Erickson on this topic. Avengers campus is a massive fail in my opinion. It worse than galaxy’s edge!

Basically you're too harsh on Disney and it's turning me off to this channel. Maybe I don't have thick skin, but I think calling DCA an inferior product to DL isn't fair. Saying DCA cut all the corners isn't fair. DCA gates aren't so bad. In times of emergency an easy to find alternative exit is crucial. Building codes may also be responsible for some differences. Like why they didn't have the snack carts blocking the doors in DCA.. looks like a safety measure and I'm all for it. This video is basically titled, "What I think is the worst part of DCA". I don't think that's constructive criticism. I haven't watched the one titled worst ride in DL, but that title doesn't sound like constructive criticism either. Some of your video titles just have a negativity to them. Toxic positivity is an album name and not a real thing. You don't HAVE to bash on something, just to say it's not the way you would have done it. Maybe it's time to let the sunshine in. 🌞
