It’s kind of funny how Amnesiac went from being grossly underrated at its release to being so ubiquitously praised that calling it “overrated” could even plausibly be a take.
@chrislawuk
@chrislawuk Жыл бұрын
God that’s a great point! You just reminded me, but yeah Amnesiac was SLAGGGGGGed by the music press at the time as boring, as “Kid A offcuts”, and god knows what. Like - again, how you can call any album that has fucking Pyramid Song, for example, on it “offcuts” just shows how entitled music reviewers/listeners can be. But that’s fine, really, because enjoyment is truly subjective. But I think it’s pretty clear the band said that the Kid A and Amnesiac sessions were just really huge, Amnesiac was always planned as a release when Kid A was being put together IIRC, it’s not like they thought “oh let’s scrabble these offcuts together and push a release out”. The album is cohesive, has its own sound, is wonderfully dark and twisted in places, yes it has some meditative/more simple moments but that to me adds to the experience, not detracts from it.

So many Radiohead fans have it as an underrated album or some ‘experimental masterpiece’ when really it’s just leftovers from kid A. Don’t get me wrong some amazing songs- but It’s also filled with stuff that was clearly left off a record for a reason- it’s not fragmented in an experimental way it’s just undercooked leftovers!
@xbenci

@@mrmogford8117 ok but that's just Radiohead fans being Radiohead fans. on a larger scope, Amnesiac is one of Radiohead's least-given-a-shit-about albums. either way on RYM it's top 100 only because it has an insane number of ratings, which the editor also pointed out

@@xbenci fair point but it is still his perspective on what he feels is overrated in general, no point getting wound up he chose this over something else. So personally can see why he picked this album.

@@mrmogford8117 If Pyramid Song, I Might Be Wrong or Knives Out are undercooked leftovers then I don't know what that says about tracks like Treefingers and In Limbo off Kid A. Amnesiac's actually my favorite Radiohead album, while I understand and can see how Anthony's criticisms of it being overrated make sense to me, (and yes I'll be cringe since I'm on the internet talking about Radiohead again) the obscured surrealism the whole thing gives me floors me every time, the fact that you can't tell what Thom or the band are trying to tell you but you can feel most of it being hellishly sad or angry is something that not only brings me back to this album more than any of Radiohead's other albums, but makes it one of the only Radiohead albums that haven't grown off of me in recent years. Massive favorite, 's all.

But Haunt You Everyday is great. There isn't a single song on Maladroit that makes me feel anything. Maybe I need to listen to it some more, but yeah, not good, not bad. Just there. Yes, truly, it is a must for any RH fan. I thought it was so awesome, like the world’s best art exhibition but available to everyone on earth (with a computer anyway). I got stoned once and wandered around it for hours. That Pulk/Pull place, that’s designed like the world’s best rave, and as you move it affects the track mix, it basically made me track down a Meta Quest 2 to see if I could feel like I was more really there… unfortunately not really as it wasn’t designed for VR even with VorpX on my side. I hope it always stays available because clearly a lot of thought went into it, and the Kid/Amnesiac re-releases. Another reason I love the RH boys - they innovate even outside of the studio (the other day I was reminded of the hullabaloo around the IN RAINBOWS release method), I think they always look at it from the perspective of the fans as honestly as possible. Let’s be honest I want to wash all their feet. Jesus style.

Amnesiac is my favorite Radiohead album and it’s hard for me to describe why. A lot of it is connected to some personal stuff that was going on at the time, which I don’t want to get into that much. To put it simply, a couple of extreme life changing events had happened in pretty rapid succession and I felt confused, broken, and paranoid. I saw that I had crossed a threshold that I could not come back from. My old life was over and I had killed it. In a way, I felt like an amnesiac (lol). I had to pick up the pieces and try to move on. And that’s what the record means for me. It exemplifies this period (in some ways ongoing) period in my life, as well as the mindset that characterized it. I wouldn’t say Amnesiac is exactly overrated. It’s a lot more out there than Kid A and not nearly as accessible. And I agree that it’s far from flawless. What I would say however is that it is completely different from Kid A. It’s tone is much darker, it’s music more minimalist and it’s progression reversed. I’d generally say that Kid A gets less despairing and more relaxed and upbeat as it goes along, while Amnesiac starts out somewhat bleak and proceeds to get more jaded and defeated. I see it as the aftermath or “answer” to Kid A. Musically its contains parts I find nostalgic, eerie, mystical, hopeless, and empty, and for I love that, and that extends to the b-sides. I actually cried when I first heard that version of “Fog”. It’s increased influence in jazz is actually one of my favorite parts about it. Many people including Ant call it out of place but I think that’s intentional. The whole album feels out of place, abrupt, and wrong. And it works for me. “Life in a Glasshouse” is my favorite closer of all their albums. To me it feels like a resurfacing of lucidity which caves (or shatters) in under the stress and fear of, well, existing with others. It’s almost like a dirge in a way, for the album itself or something. I know the song is technically about celebrity culture but that’s my view of its overarching theme or core emotive idea. I get Ant’s critique and I see where he’s coming from in a more objective lens, but Idk it just means a lot to me lol.

Huge Radiohead fan here, I've been hyperfixated on them for like the past 6 months because I haven't been able to find any other bands that make me feel the way they do, and Amnesiac's my favorite album of theirs precisely because of the emotions it conveys. I don't believe Amnesiac was really ever supposed to be this big chart topper that'll change the industry or whatever like Kid A and OK Computer more or less were. I mean, I guess with the whole double album thing it technically _is_ a bunch of Kid A leftovers, but it doesn't really feel like that to me. Like, if you ask me, I think if Kid A is supposed to be this big exploration of electronic art rock and a good palate cleanser for the band after all the trouble they went through for the stuff they did before, then Amnesiac is more like them putting on a little passion project play to themselves with all the new toys they just got for christmas. Sure, it's a baller album, but I feel like it's too intimate to be something made to appease the fans and executives or make headlines in the local paper. It's too dark, It's too depressing, it sounds like Thom just sat down at his diary and started trauma-dumping for 8 hours straight. Aside from Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors kinda dragging on a bit I can't really find anything I don't like about the album, and I think that's because it speaks to me in a way that an album created to appeal to a ton of people never could. Like, with OK Computer and Kid A you could totally argue that there are a few "happy" (or _optimistic,_ ha ha ha) songs sprinkled throughout the tracklist, but I think for Amnesiac Radiohead just didn't care enough to try and lighten the mood; the best you'll get is Thom singing about how much capitalism sucks for the 15th time or that one line in I Might Be Wrong where he _implies_ he's not a complete nihilist anymore. I guess what I'm trying to say is that trying to critically compare Amnesiac to Radiohead's other works is kinda missing the point of the album. Thom and the gang didn't put on their hour long backyard greek tragedy production so they could top charts or get a bunch of new fans or whatever, they put out an hour long and record label backed piece of vent art. I mean, I guess if something is getting a lot of praise then it's by definition a contender of "overrated" status, and you kinda _have_ to review things when you're a reviewer, but I can't help but feel like this album in particular isn't trying to play the game. I guess my take isn't really bulletproof, because by my logic most indie music somebody decided to make in their bedroom one night is automatically exempt from criticism, but nonetheless I still hope this comment is sufficient enough to make somebody see this album the way I see it, if only for a little. Also, I need to find more music that's tonally and aesthetically similar to Amnesiac, so if you know of anything like that I'd really appreciate your recommendations. Overall, no, I don't think Amnesiac is overrated, and I am really not helping to kill off the depressed Radiohead fan meme.

for me the most underrated album of the 2000's is bull of heaven - 018 - candles green, heads and skulls. an absolutely perfect lofi drone masterpiece that is as lonely and cold as it is calming. while yes it is a little over 4 hours, this album was made with sleep in mind, and it also excels at that. a full listen fully awake is 100% worth the time and just absolutely bliss, and for bull of heaven its actually pretty variable with it having 3 distinct sections that all have different moods but keeping a consistent instrument and feel. the second section in particular just gives me shivers every time i hear it, this album is utterly gorgeous. my real picks for most underrated would be 045, the single best drone ive ever heard in my life, and 118, my favorite drone album of all time, but 045 is a week long and 118 is 2 months long and they are hard to reccomend. 045 has an excerpt thats just over an hour long, and 118 has 3 excerpts but they only display a fraction of the real amount of segments. the comment page for 118 on rym has the fan excerpts archive page listed, which has every segment in the full song as excerpts. even then the 118 fan excerpts in total are about 23 hours, which is a lot to ask for most listeners, but it is sooooooooooo worth your time.

They work really well as compliments to one another, and I love them both for different reasons. You can really feel a lot of the influence both albums had on a tonne of electronic stuff afterwards. Kid A is the strange, floaty drug trip, Amnesiac is the cold, rough-edged comedown.

Amnesiac is my favorite Radiohead, and the unfinished project feel of the thing is probably what draws me into it the most. Not their best, that's probably Thief, but Amnesiac is shuffle cocaine and Spinning Plates is my own portable ASMR machine.

I've always seen Amnesiac as one of their more underrated albums. It has that same eerie and sinister vibe that Kid A does, just presented in a more organic way. One comment I read described Kid A as feeling like a cold alien landscape, and Amnesiac as feeling an abandoned dusty attic. Also the "incomplete" song structures never really bothered me. If anything, the album feeling more fragmented just adds to the vibe for me.

The loose structure makes the songs feel like distant ramblings, which fits the album atmosphere perfectly. Pyramid Song, for instance. Is just a descriptive abstract verse that's repeated almost exactly the same but more confidently with a full arrangement. It's fairly loose and even demo-like, I don't think they ever structured another song like that, but it works really well.

If you do a 90s overrated and underrated list (if you continue this), my suggestions would be Third Eye Blind’s debut record as an underrated album because not only are the hits from that record incredible, I think the non-singles hit just as hard if not harder because of the visceral lyrical content and the amazing delivery of Jenkin’s vocals and the instrumentation being incredible. A little aside, but the song Narcolepsy lyrically is like the entire plot of Night in the Woods…to me at least… speaking of which, this album to me a 8.5 to 9 out of 10. and for Overrated, probably Oasis’s What’s the Story Morning Glory because even as an Oasis fan, I think the debut from them hits much harder to warrant the praise the follow-up gets and the follow-up doesn’t flow as cohesively as Definitely Maybe. Despite having my favorite singles, it feels more like a compilation record of greatest hits than a holistic album experience. Some might point to the mixing being an issue…honestly, never bothered me but it is a step down again from the debut because the compression is a tad bit overwhelming. The Oasis fan in me still gives this a 8 or 9 out of 10, but I think the unquestioned praised this album gets by critics (especially RollingStone putting goddamn wonderwall at 100 out of 500 on the greatest songs of all time, and this record super high on the 500 albums of all time, to me there’s a problem lol) If you have read this all the way, thanks and as you can tell, I’m a fan of Britpop…oh shit, I could have put Blur’s ParkLife on Overrated albums but that’s probably the Oasis fan in me doing that…(but seriously, the only thing I like from them is 13 and Leisure) but for another underrated album, The Las debut record (and only record to date)-highly influential and incredible for the time, 9.5 to 10 out of 10 for me

It has the same vibe as a psychedelic album without really actually sounding like psych, and it's a top 10 Halloween record. Even 8 Outtakes from Amnesiac is in the top half of their output. That's just how good the Kid A sessions were. I will say it's odd that Worrywort wasn't included on Amnesiac, it's a top 10 RH track. That said, Vespertine is better and I'm glad it got overtaken on RYM when they changed the algorithm.

:( Amnesiac is my favourite Radiohead album and by a mile too. Pyramid Song, Life in a Glasshouse, Knives Out, You and Whose Army, Dollars and Cents - for me these aren't just the best tracks Radiohead has put out, but also the most 'Radiohead-y' of their stuff - more melancholic, atmospheric, dark and engaging than anything else in their catalogue. I know my Radiohead opinions are very unpopular (in other hot takes In Rainbows is in the bottom half of their discography and The Bends is terribly overrated), but *the* most disappointing? Damn.

@@f4gsforpele It's precisely how consistent In Rainbows is that puts it in the lower half of their albums for me - it's not The King of Limbs, but it's a bit boring for me. Same goes for The Bends. OK Computer meanwhile has some tracks I love - Paranoid Android, Climbing Up The Walls, but also some I think are boring as Hell - eg Karma Police (another hot take, I know), and in my eyes OK Computer is wildly inconsistent in quality. I love Kid A, but everything I love in Kid A is, to my taste, done better in Amnesiac. For me Amnesiac absolutely has peaks and valleys - but not in quality, just in tone. It is super stripped back, but that really clicks for me, Pyramid Song is for me easily the best single track Radiohead have made, Knives Out, Dollars and Cents, I might be Wrong, You and Whose Army are all up there too, and the interludes and snippets like Hunting Bears totally work for me too. Obviously that's not going to work for everyone - but to sum it up Amnesiac > In Rainbows for the same reasons Swans' The Seer > To Be Kind - I like a project that is a bit more varied.
