I'm a Liverpool fan, but i think Chelsea is the most popular football club in Ghana. Chelsea's success in the 21st century coincided with the boom of premier League in Ghana. The PL viewership became significant in Ghana in the early 2000s when sports viewing centres in Ghana became a prominent business. This gave access to more people to watch PL football cos it was never broadcasted on local tv stations. This was the time Mourinho came to Chelsea and many people here loved his boastful character coupled with his love for African players. Signing Essien was the biggest point. Essien at that time was considered the best Ghanaian player at that time. Young people who were born in Ghana in the 90s and 2000s make up more than half of the PL fans population in Ghana. And most of these young people support Chelsea because of their first acquaintance with PL football coincided with these important events in Chelsea's history.

I lived in Ghana for a couple years (from the US and am a Liverpool fan as well!) and I agree. Chelsea is huge in Ghana and I'd say they're probably the biggest. When I worked in Addis Ababa for a year in 2014, I was the lone Manchester United supporter in the local bar I frequented to watch Premier League and took a lot of stick from the 70 or so Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal supporters, but they were always welcoming whenever I showed up. I once showed up 15 minutes late to a packed house, so the owner let me sit on the barrel behind the bar, knowing I would be the only patron who wouldn't be tempted to dip their hand in the till. The screen was a white bedsheet that rippled in the breeze.

No way Man Utd are the biggest English club in Greece... Liverpool have had a massive tradition in the country, fed by the over-exposure of the team in the 80s by the State Television. As a result, this helped generate a legion of sports journalists overwhelmingly favoured towards Liverpool, to the extent of propagandising in their favor. Liverpool are extremely mainstream there, well beyond United, who only took off there in the 00s. PS: I'm a Liverpool fan too.

Younger Koreans are also pretty fairweather and will change who they support from year to year and you'll find few who supported Leverkusen when Son played there. Also, saying it's only because of Son Heung Min, is missing the fact the Lee Yeong Pyo played left back for Spurs for 70 games. So Koreans got a taste for Spurs back then.

Messi and Ronaldo are the biggest factors there alongside the dominance the teams had over the past decade, Madrid over the last 8 years or so and Barca during the decade prior. It also coincided with the rise of one of the best National teams in history (Spain) dominating the sport for 4 years, which is a long time for international football. That team was about 70% Barca 25% Madrid 5% other stuff. Barca 2008-2012 was arguably the greatest team ever assembled being one of the only two teams to successfully complete a sixtuple (win every single tournament they participated in a season), while Madrid's 3peat of the UCL naturally speaks for itself.

Also, an honorable mention to Newcastle and Aston Villa, thanks to Asprilla and Juan Pablo Angel

A video about ⚽ football in 🇫🇮 Finland might make a good content. 🤔 As you've mentioned before, ice hockey 🏒 rules supreme here, and I'd imagine that the Premier League and La Liga etc. leagues are more popular than our domestic ones. While my entire life I have been cheering for one of our most successful hockey clubs HC TPS in the Finnish Elite League, I rarely pay attention to their football side FC TPS which was relegated from the top tier Veikkausliiga to the second tier Ykkönen in 2020. And there's drastic difference: while the male hockey players are well earning professionals in Finland, most footballers need a second job to make living.

I think the data on Nigeria is a little bit skewed because of the influence of the internet. And the reason I say so is that much of the population in Nigeria don't own a smartphone and most fan get their football news from the local Newspaper. I'm an Arsenal fan here in Nigeria and everywhere you go, Chelsea is the most popular football club. You go to these view centers when Chelsea plays an EFL match against a fourth division team and the place is packed as though they are playing in a Champions league Final😂😂😂😂. When they do make it to the final of any competition, the whole city is painted blue. You would think they are having a Carnival and sometimes it lasts over a week. Maybe I'm wrong and it's just that they have more passionate set of fans.

I may be wrong here but in Malta i think that title would go to Manchester United. Malta was a British colony for a long while but the cultural and geographic ties to Italy (Malta is just south of Sicily) means alot of Italian clubs have decent fanbases too, with the El classico clubs and the likes of Bayern also having a decently large community of supporters. However i think it's united who take the crown due to the long ties between the two. To start although Utd have never had a Maltese player, Malta does lay host to the oldest ever Manchester United supporters club (yes even including supporter clubs in the UK), On top of this, Man Utd recently signed a sponsorship deal with Malta's tourism authority (which is why you see visit Malta ads at old trafford), that coupled with the fact that it's not the first time Man Utd legends have had a very warm welcome in Malta makes me think Utd may be the most supported club of all in the country (although several Italian teams like Juve, Inter and Milan and even prem clubs like Liverpool) may also challenge that statment. Despite that and the fact Maltese clubs almost never make it into European competitions, Many Maltese clubs maintain decent supporter bases in the country, this doesn't mean the most supported club in Malta is Maltese but that local clubs give some competition, It is also a common Phenomenon in Malta that people have a local and foreign club they hold close to their heart. In conclusion, i think Manchester United is the most supported prem club here in Malta if not possibly the most supported club of all, although i may also be wrong. (If you read to this point, thank you for taking the time to)

Whenever there aren’t any local connections, some Eastern Europeans like rooting for a player “from the neighborhood”. Barca signed two prominent Balkan players in the 90s - Stoichkov, who was the best player on the dream team - and later, Hagi. The most prominent Montenegro player ever is Dejan Savićević who played for AC Milan and won a UCL. However he was generally under appreciated by the Italian club so I’m not surprised that the locals don’t remember Milan fondly.

You should talk about clubs named after other clubs, usually non top flight teams. Years ago, Independiente de Avellaneda was followed all across South America, which led to a lot of teams in and out Argentina named after it. The best example might be Independiente del Valle, an Ecuatorian team which in the last 10 years has grown into one of the best teams on it's country. It originally had a badge inspired by the Argentinian team, and then one with the same colours as Inter (The Italian Inter) until 2015 when it changed to black and white. Another Argentinian team that inspired various other clubs is Huracan, which might be the one with most homonyms despite being a team with no important feats neither the most popular here. Most of the clubs named after it were founded on Argentina, which is actually impressive because there might be one Huracan for each one of the country's provinces and more than a dozen in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. There are a few other outside Argentintina, like the non league club Huracan London. Only a few have different badges, which shows it's not a coincidence. There's a Santos Laguna in Mexico which might be named after the Brazilian team. The most succesful one is, without a doubt, Milans Inter which was founded by AC Milan supporters, but not as an homage. It's an interesting story, google it up
