Great video! 7:42 : in Germany we still do that at the beginning of an apprenticeship. I for example had to file for about 4 months every day.

Had to do the same thing before i was allowed to study mechanical engineering but got the two week project done in two days so not that much work in total

Same thing in Denmark. And it sticks to you.. I still use the file in at least 15% of my projects every day.

Lars Borch yeah files are still a pretty need tool, just like Walt said. How long are your apprenticeships in Denmark? Its 3-4 years in Germany.

Excellent advice as always. I’ve learned so much, even though I’m still just ‘putting scales and bolsters’ on premade blades.

Loved the video. The most absolutely necessary tool in mu shop, together with the granite slab, is an height gage. Together with 123 blocks and blue dykem!!!

One of my luckiest auction wins: A 6-inch AND an 8-inch pair of Mitutoyo calipers in as-new condition. Retail value ~$600. Auction price? $55. Sure glad nobody else knew what they were. I did use various $25-$30 calipers, both dial and digital, for everything, but couldn't resist the Mitutoyos. I still use the lower end ones in the dirtiest areas.

6:15 (g'day from Australia), I was in the same boat as you based on my experience with 1st gen cordless drills. I hung on to my corded drills for a long time. I now own a relatively cheap 18V cordless and doubt I'll returned to a corded tool. One day I'll get a good quality cordless hammer drill too.

I have most of those in my general shop. I have yet to build a forge or long-belt grinder, but these tools are just as handy in a wood shop too. Even in wood the 1-2-3 blocks are invaluable as are files.

I have found that a ferriers rasp is really fast at removing wood.

one thing that sees a LOT of work in my shop is my trusty angle grinder. a good selection of cut off discs and flappy discs ranging from 80 grit coarse to polishing discs, can use them for almost anything.

My nephew wondered why I carried around a set of coarse, medium and fine mill files in my tool pack. Then I showed him how I touched up a chipped edge on his grandma's wood splitting wedge. He now is learning proper filing form so that at age 13 he can make his own knife.

There is a reason classically trained Gunsmiths call files English Mills.
@EldarKinSlayer5 жыл бұрын
@Creeping Death files in the hands of a practiced individual can do anything a Mill can do and English gunsmiths in the hey day of fine English Sporting Firearms rarely used Machine Tools. Labor was cheaper than the tooling, often faster as well.

I'm with you! Starting out as basic as possible. You should get an angle grinder... They save a lot of time on the rough shaping/grinding

I once had to clamp a clamp that was clamping something.
@PetesCreativeRecycling5 жыл бұрын
If the 1st clamp isn't strong enough, I will clamp a clamp as well. I've even clamped a clamp from the back of the clamp by putting the clamps handle into the handle of the 1st clamp to increase clamping force when I didn't have room for a 2nd clamp.
