LIAR .. One of the faves amongst the Queenies!! I really think Deaky has the spotlight here! Finally, the cameraman pans to the bass playing! The lyrics are speculated to be about some not-so-good experiences at Boarding School. Thanks for the reaction!

This definitely IS Queen. Early Queen is a very different thing to 80ies Queen. Try "March of the Black Queen " for something to surprise you. Anything off Queen2. Queen didn't do Formula and hated repeating themselves or being predictable. They were metal and even Punk before anybody else was.

The power of John Deacon's bass at that moment center stage - whooee! All star moments are crafted within the song. Nobody goes off on a self indulgent unrelated tangent. You can hear the integration of the instruments - Just like singing. The world of Queen was different in the 70s...very complex layered compositions. Their journey will simplify and streamline theiir sound. But without this foundation, they would not have found their niche.

This song epitomizes early Queen. I love it! It was released as a single in the USA and was a huge audience favorite at Queen's performances in the UK in the early 70s. Freddie's vocals are fantastic and the song is complex, creative, uniquely Queen, and shows off each band member's talents. I remember that you were going to react to the entire Rainbow, 1974 concert - I think you said you were going to show it on your Patreon channel. If you saw that concert, then you saw this song - the way the band performed this song on stage was AMAZING!.

Hey MMB... thanks for yet another great reaction...Yes, this IS TRUE Queen in all their glory! Always outta the box, always showcasing their particular talents with perfection, and entertaining their fans to the hilt! Yes, UNIQUE is a true concept of them, as ALL their songs are... and from the DEBUT album, showcasing to the world who they were, and what they were about... Now, try "Seven Seas of Rhye". "In the Lap of the Gods" or "Ogre Battle" for a perspective of vocal range, then try "Let Me Live" for their vocal talent throughout the band... blessings.

Roy Thomas Baker was a producer for Queen as you see here many years ago. Interesting thing about him today is he produces for an English band called The Darkness who has a drummer by the name of Rufus Tiger Taylor. Rufus Tiger Taylor is the son of Queen drummer Roger Taylor (named by Freddie Mercury).

Have you heard "Stone Cold Crazy"? It's speed metal before that was even a thing. Or try "'39" for something completely different from either. On the Official Video, Brian sings, but there are ones of Freddie singing the lead. Not sure if you're ready for "Prophet's Song" which is Brian's masterpiece in the same way "Bohemian Rhapsody" is Freddie's. It's a rock madrigal with a fugue section. I love it, but it's definitely a deep cut. Both songs are on the same album, "A Night at the Opera."

Liar was on their debut album. Led Zeppelin was one of the bands they admired so could have been an influence. Their earlier music was pretty heavy. John's bass at the end was spectacular! Try "Cold Stone Crazy" live at the Rainbow. Enjoying your thoughtful commentary. Looking forward to more Queen reactions from you!

This is a classic Freddie track. Most of the songs that Freddie wrote through the early seventies had this sprawling, epic style and included a lot of fantastical elements such as fairies, planets, gods, and monarchs. Check out "March of the Black Queen" from Queen II. It switches styles and inspirations quite frequently and is generally agreed to be a direct ancestor of Bohemian Rhapsody. "In the Lap of the Gods Part One and Two" is also quite magical.

Queen got many a negative review in articles because of their versatility. This one has a ton of chord changes, great operatic vocals (Freddie hitting highs & lows in one sentence), tempo changes. Every member gets their time to shine, from Brian's solos, to Roger's drumming, to John's time in the spotlight there. So many deep cuts out there don't sound like what we expect from them based on their radio hits. Enjoy.

I agree with the previous “In my defence” recommendation for even just the video. Otherwise “I want it all” for the solos and transitions, “One vision” live at Wimbley because the OG inspiration came from MLK’s I have a dream speech. But that being said; Queen has a ton of surprises hiding in their albums like “Liar”. You’ve barely scratched the surface my dude ♥️

I think of this as father of bohemian rhapsody, pun intended-the most finished epic piece on the first album, and about failing your family. That was a big deal for him, in his early lyrics. Lots of stories of young men with home ties, out in the cruel world.

There is an amazing live performance by Queen at the Tribute To Freddie Mercury Concert at Wembley Stadium where Roger Daltrey (lead singer of The Who) and Tony Iommi (guitarist of Black Sabbath) join Queen and perform the Queen song "I Want It All". The crowd absolutely erupts in a frenzy of excitement as the combo of Queen, The Who, and Black Sabbath performing together was so unique and so awesome. I've never seen anyone react to that performance though. Would be cool if you are the first!

Thanks, MMB - love this early Queen! (check out Fred's style - that one-hand glitter glove? somebody else did it at some point... lol) This entire band was fire... and of course, no autotune.. although this was not entirely "live" - at this time they were quite proud to announce "no synthesizers" - b/c they were often accused of that... Brian and Roger were the total rockers, but check out Deacon on that Bass! lol) P.S. what about "Millionaire's Waltz" -- check it when you have time & inclination...

Hi MMB. This song feels very "Prog-Rock" from the early-mid 70's. Many bands were flexing their instrumental skills, and classical training, exploring the more open musical formats on FM radio. This complex music started with experimental psychadelic bands like Pink Floyd, and the complex instumentation was further pushed by bands like Rush. I think this song suggests Queen searching for their unique voice, but I'm not an expert, and Queen fans love this song.

Bear in mind that this is very early Queen, ( from their debut album )when they are still formulating their signature sound plus during this era the glam/art rock of David Bowie , Roxy music and T.Rex and the prog rock of Yes and Genesis etc were becoming prominent on top of the heavy rock of Zep, Purple, Sabbath in the U.K. and Queen were trying to straddle and blend all these genres. You can hear elements of Bohemian Rhapsody here and how they progressed toward that sound on the next few albums and the Queen sound that your are more familiar with.

On song composition (for lots of people, not just Queen) Roger Taylor years after this (1986) wrote a song called One Vision. He said that he thought is was about Martin Luther King, but by the time they released it he said he had no idea what it was about. When asked why he said, "Well, they changed the lyrics." When asked "Who changed the lyrics?" Roger answered, "That rotter Freddie." So there is the evidence of at least two hands in a song which could have been credited to Roger Taylor and was credited to Roger Taylor. And who is credited on the song as writer has a whole lot of influence on what amount of money which person makes off the song. By 1989, to cut back on arguments, the entire band was credited with writing all songs. So on "The Miracle" album (1989) and on the "Innuendo" album (1991) the entire band is credited with writing all songs.

May I suggest you watch more from this televised performance? "Stone Cold Crazy " is a good start. It was covered later by Metallica, became one of their hits and the received a Grammy for it. In my opinion, the Grammy should have been Queens. Another would be "Seven Seas of Rhye", and frankly, you can pick any song or all the songs from this program and the following one, Christmas, televised, Live from the Odeon, Hammersmith.

This is a very interesting song, the rock guitar, then the rather lamenting lyrics. I really love this song, the intro, the switch ups all are so fantastic. Queen was influenced by Led Zeppelin so you are probably right on the inspiration for this song. Queen had just about every thing in their bag. 4 Songwriters who had very different tastes in music plus they were not afraid to try anything. The bass on this song is so awesome and I love John's tasty bass solo. I think Freddie wrote this song before he joined Queen for his band at that time though I don't know if they ever performed it. That too might be part of the difference you are feeling. Thank you for your reaction.
