As a Chinese who speaks Mandarin, Cantonese is like a completly different language when trying to communicate verbally. Some relatives were visiting us and the husband and son only speak cantonese. We tried to say' thank you for your visit' in cantonese and we couldn't wrap our head around how to say it at all (translated from Google translate). And we can speak about 6 different languages combined and are familiar with more 😅

Urdu, Bhojpuri, Awadhi, Maithili, Haryanvi, Rajasthani, Marwari, various Pahadi languages etc etc. All in all there are 100+ languages of dialects. Same is true for the other languages in other Indian states, like Marathi-Konkani group has 40+ different languages and dialects.

Konkani is migrants language in karnataka. Not native . Karnataka's native language is majority Kannada ( 75 % ) along with Tulu , and kodava languages. Others like konkani , marathis are migrants to karnataka who migrated centuries ago for various reasons . And muslims have deccan urdu as mother tongue. After Kannada Only Tulu ( 3 , 4 % )and kodava ( 3 % ) languages native to karnataka. Official language is Kannada only .

As mandarin isn’t technically a language, but rather a dialect, it’s harder to measure the statistics and since they can’t be listed as individual languages due to the limited intelligibility between them. E.g - In some regions of USA, kids refer to their grandfather as ‘papa’ even though the word ‘papa’ means daddy (in Spanish and Russian also it is papá for daddy). The word ‘बाबा’ in Hindi means grandfather but ‘বাবা’ in Bengali means daddy.

Actually, that 1.3 billion is more divided up into several different languages. Mandarin is the most commonly known, but the dialects make it difficult for some provinces to speak to one another. Thankfully for everyone's sake, the same dialect foreigners are taught is also taught nationally, but people will still speak their local dialects more because more people around them speak that way. Beyond that, there is Cantonese in southern parts of China like Hong Kong, Uyghur spoken by Uyghurs, Bodic by the Tibetans, and Mongol by the Inner Mongolians. There are other linguistic minorities in China like Korean, English, and Japanese, but I think most of those people are in China for business. With all that said, Mandarin is still the largest language in terms of native speakers and possibly even total speakers.

Exactly! However language and dialect aren’t synonyms… they’re all Chinese (zhōngwén) but depending on region, dialect varies. To clarify, dialects are different versions of a language that aren’t intelligible enough to be considered their own language. Think “Français québécois vs français france vs français Belgique, etc.” on the other side of this, languages that are just intelligible enough to be considered it’s own language, think Portuguese, Italian, and Spanish. Or Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian Does that make sense?
