The temper temper incident, in the Korean War, the North Koreans had a 105 millimeter artillery implacment on top of a hill and hit the USS Wisconsin with one shell causing minimal damage to the deck and 3 injuries, in response the USS Wisconsin wich had 9 16 inch guns turned all guns toward the implacement and fired a full broadside destroying not only the guns but also the hill. Afterward, its sister ship pulled up and, using its signal lamp, said, "Temper Temper." According to some sources, the USS Wisconsin responded with, "But they started it"

the palais garnier in paris was commissioned by napoleon iii but because he had been exiled and france was a republic by the time it was finished, he never got to actually see the opera finished and the architect, charles garnier, had to pay for a ticket at its inauguration. the street connecting the opera house to the louvre (avenue de l’opéra) was specifically designed to be wide so the emperor could go directly from his palace (tullières palace which was part of the louvre but torn down during the paris commune i believe) without fear of being assassinated. baron haussmann, the person responsible for turning paris into the city it is today (uniform buildings, wide treelined streets, public parks) and garnier agreed to not have any trees planted on avenue de l’opéra as to not obstruct the building and to this day it is one of the few major avenues/boulevards that don’t have any trees!

correction for story 10. it was NOT Robert Liston that Listerine is named after, it is named after Joseph ListER (Robert Liston and Joseph Lister are not at all related, it is pure coincidence that they have very similar last names) in fact Robert Liston was one of Joseph Lister's biggest rivals IIRC...

King George III (yes, that one) was on the throne when Pride and Prejudice was written -- nothing Victorian about it!

I went on Safari in Kruger wildlife reserve. We were on top of lions hyenas and leopard. We were in a lifted open air truck (think Harari!) however the hippos were waaaaaay over there think 1/4mile.

Jane Austen was Regency and they were even hornier. And used fewer euphemisms to hide it.

i feel like New York should release owls to combat the rodent problem we have here

Flaco the owl, a Eurasian eagle owl who got lose from the Central Park zoo, apparently died of rat poison so I don't think that would work.

@@Morna777 it’s a futurama reference. Somewhere in the future, new new yorkers decide to use owls to solve the rodent problem and in turn, have an owl infestation issue

Phineas Gage. He was an 🇺🇸 railroad worker. He put gunpowder into the ground (I assume it was to help make the track) & put a metal spike in it. The gunpowder detonated, and the spike was shot through his chin & out the top of his skull. After spazing out for a few seconds, he got up like nothing happened & obviously fired from his job. His personality drastically changed to that of a mad drunk & somehow lived for another 12 years (according to Wikipedia) before having a bunch of seizures & finally dying at age 36. By all logic, he should have dropped dead instantly, but how he survived for so long baffles me.

His case was one of the first addressed by modern style neurology as far as I know and began our study of how the brain controls personality.
