DR and the DRZ are pretty similar to the XR Honda series of Enduro bikes. A lot of the emphasis in relation to enduro and , dirt bike engine design these days seems be focused on performance. The high end, highly strung, overly tuned and geared dirt bike engines made by a number of manufacturers don't handle the high consistent RPM's of road use particularly well. The low maintenance , versatility of tough dirt bike engine design is still appreciated in many quarters where the XRS , DRZ DR are the workhorse of choice for those who need a machine that has good power is practical , dependable and lots of fun.

I seriously considered getting g the DRZ400 after my first DR650 got Tboned. But the simplicity of the 650, the torque, and the weight on the interstate brought me back. And after a few major dumps up in the mountains of San Diego, while the lighter DRZ would have been more fun, I am not as sure I could have ride it out of the crap, broken cables and snapped levers and all, like I did my DR. She has proven her self to be as tough as a mountain goat.

Definitley man. the Dr is a tractor and it's a great bike for commuting and with the right technique and setup, anything is possible.

The 790cc big bore kit on the DR makes like 70ft/lbs. Do that and gear it really steep to take advantage of that and it should MOVE.

I have a DRZ400 often thought about DR. Off the show room floor the DRZ400 has less issues (suspension for example). On the highway the DRZ400 is missing weight but easily added with camping gear, gear the bike up and your good. If your a bigger fellow, the DR is likely a better choice. I'm 190lbs. Overall the DRZ is a more rounded bike but I get it, owners I know of the DR love it. Honestly, I would hate to have to make the choice again as the two are so close depending on what you want to do as per this review.

Thanks man. Glad you got another 650. They will put out some speed when you pin that throttle in 5th. Had mine to 105-110 on sumo wheels and no performance mods. Would like to see what she does now with the few mods I've made. Really need that tm40 carb though! Thank you for the congrats too. Can't wait to check out your DR next month at the meet up.

Great video man I just got a 17 DRZ400SM to replace my CRF250L that was stolen a month ago and I had went back and forth between the 650 and the 400 but went with the 400 for my needs and wants. Definitely an amazing bike other than the engine noise which is much louder than any of the Honda's I have ever owned, supposedly this is normal for a DRZ. I liked your comparisons though and the 650 is a much better adventuring choice than the 400.

I have owned both a DRZ400 and a DR650. I did not like the 400 at all. Due to the close ratio 5-speed gearbox, the 400 was useless as a street bike. It was not a good dirt bike either; my XR250R is a 6-speed, great gearing spread, and is much, much better off road, so much so, there is no comparison at all between the two. My DR650 has a high comp piston, a high performance cam, a TM40 pumper carb, and a full exhaust system. It is a powerful beast, is geared perfectly for the road, and is a fantastic street bike. Handles perfectly, zero complaints. Tons of fun! And, it's a decent trail bike too, easily torquing up any hill with no effort. The 400 had basically no torque, it sucked. And by the way, liquid cooling is a pain in the rear!

I’ve been contemplating selling my XR 400 in favor of a DRZ my main goal is to have a 7032 sport bike and a super Moto I’m just thinking about keeping the XR as a 70/30 bike and going with a DR 650 SM I agree the extra weight coupled with torque makes it a nice all-around cruising bike for MY Needs and wants! I live in Vermont so the XR would primarily be for Dirt Road cruising in class four road Riding with just a little tour in between getting from dirt dirt great review thanks!

What’s the after market look like for the DR? I’m looking to get my first bike and I’m 155lbs and debating a drz400 vs dr650
@MotardSteve
@MotardSteve 10 ай бұрын
You wouldn't be disappointed with either option. Both bikes haven't changed in decades so there's a ton of after market for them both. At your weight the drz or Dr would be a good fit. IDK what your physical fitness looks like but I'd say go drz because you'll appreciate the lighter weight and the top speed difference isn't as drastic and you can always swap sprockets to manipulate the top speed and acceleration.

Great video.......still love the klr650 LMAO
@MotardSteve
@MotardSteve 8 жыл бұрын
The klr is definitely a more friendly bije for barebones adventure/dual sport riding with the bigger tank and fairings. But it's not as nimble in the dirt because of the weight. Sink some $$$ into the DR and you can have a lighter bike with the creature comforts of the klr. but I'm not knocking the klr, still a good bulletproof thumper.

what about driving in traffic with watercooled VS not. I live in Miami and it gets hot. would the water cooled engine be a better fit or do you still think the 650 is better?
@MotardSteve
@MotardSteve 5 жыл бұрын
I mean honestly that oil cooler engine shedded heat really good. I never had any overheating issues or anything tbh. Water cooled is definitely more efficient but wether or not you could successfully ride on an oil cooler bike idk. I lived in Texas where the summers we're typically 90-100 degrees.

2006 and onward got a different 3rd gear set, it still has a noticeable whine in 3rd, but mines did that since I bought it at 18,xxx miles and it's about to hit 26,xxx soon. No issues yet. but Spartan Adventure had an 04 I think and his third gear shot out the case while on the highway. So I'd say any bije you plan on getting search the forums for issues like that and swap parts out if needed.

I'm debating about which to get as my first bike. I live on Kauai in Hawaii and the fastest speed limit is 50 mph and most roads are only single lane. No free ways. I would primarily use the bike for 20 min commutes to work and home and very rarely off road. I'm leaning more towards a drz400.. what do you guys think?
@MotardSteve
@MotardSteve 5 жыл бұрын
I'd say go drz400 the drz will do 50 easy I can swing 70 but it gets a bit buzzy. Plus the drz is a tad light so if you ever did decide to go off-road you wouldn't fight the bike as much.

In theory you could smash the oil cooler on the DR just like you could smash the radiator on the DRZ. I think both bikes have their up sides. The DR650 is definitely better for commuting, especially if you have to do any highway. The DRZ does highway fine, but the DR is definitely better at it.
@MotardSteve
@MotardSteve 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think I'm gonna go with a high compression piston and stage 2 cam over the 790 kit , but not 100% on that yet. I did notice the DR seemed to have some more top end to it when riding with a couple DRZ guys around town on the highways. And you make a good point about smashing the oil radiator. I like both bikes just seemed like the DR was the Swiss army knife out of the two for me. Wouldn't mind having a drz for building as an extreme dual sport setup though.
@stormperformance
@stormperformance 8 жыл бұрын
Good honest review, tough compare. Both are excellent. As you pointed out the extra weight and lower height plays to the 650 advantage on the highway. But interesting, take a 400 lower it, add the extra weight and they are dame near the same (this is my 400s). Ridding style maters. Going single track? = Then 400. Some Fire roads highway mostly? = Then 650. Here is the kicker.. The 400 can be setup to do both! The 650 cannot be setup to do single track well as it is simply to heavy. This is why I own a 400 and dress it up, down as needed. Still, the more highway I do as I get older.., I sometimes think, in a soft voice hmm, 650! :-)
@MotardSteve
@MotardSteve 8 жыл бұрын

@stormperformance
@stormperformance 8 жыл бұрын
Another good one. Watch the reviews on the wr250r vs drz400 (several out there). Head to head, the drz400 was selected more often. lower price, better highway even with 5 gears vs 6, less shifting, less stalling..really, a guy needs one of each!

Change that super restrictive exhaust and rework the carb, then check the horsepower of the DR650.
@bongodave13
@bongodave13 8 жыл бұрын
+curly27784 My DR has a TM40 Mikuni carb and a full FMF exhaust. It jumps when I ask it to! At a minimum, just getting a lighter muffler and opening up the intake will increase power and knock off a good 10 lbs. of ugly weight up high and to the rear. The first thing to change on a DR is the seat. The next is the intake/exhaust. Lighter and faster is always better.

A lot of people say the 650 is better for heavier people because it makes power lower in the revs and has superior torque to pull the extra weight. Plus the DR is more planted feeling than a drz and less intimidating for shorter riders.

Very good review man!!! I am still on the fence on whether I should get a drz400 or dr650. At first I was planning on purchasing a crf300L but then I reconsidered because of the limited power 22ish hp. I see the drz and the dr make significantly more power than the 300L. More power equals more fun. I want to ride back country roads mainly with minimal city commuting. I will almost never ride offroad except for gravel trails or dirt trails if anything. I do want to wheelie the bike I choose. I like the newer technology on the drz but the speed on the dr is faster and can be made better with mods. The dr which turns me away is the excessive weight (366lbs is a damn heavy bike) also it looks older fashioned with ancient technology. Im still very unsure what bike to pick. Let me know your opinion, thank you man

i'd rather ride a dr650 or any other enduro to a crotch rocket any day. old man or not. not an old man btw. The simplicity of the design makes it similar to a toyota 22r pickup truck as far as accessibility and maintenance goes. I change my oil after every 600 miles of street or 200 miles of dirt riding. I ride it hard on the highway due to its' current low gearing, and end up burning my oil up faster so that's primarily why I do it so often. I need to look into buying some bigger sprockets.

I previously owned a DRZ 400 S for dual sport use. Good, not great for off road/single track. OK on roads at reasonable speeds, but I felt like I was working the motor too much at highway speeds. Kinda buzzy. Since then I have purchased a 2012 DR 650 and an 01 DRZ 400E.The E, being 30 pounds lighter than the S, is much better on single track. Plus no indicator lights to break off! Low maintenance and super reliable especially compared to other high strung dirt bikes or Dual sport KTMs and such. The 650, for me is a better street bike. More torque, so It's not necessary to gear it down for low end grunt, which leaves you with a more comfortable cruising rpm. The 650 will definitely off road OK, But you will give up some due to the increased weight and lower ground clearance. Both bikes will need suspension mods especially if you are over 180 pounds and want to ride rough back roads or dirt. The 650 will require a front wheel and adaptors to make a SM, Whereas you can buy a DRZ 400SM and ride! Yes, I know this is a SM comparison video, I Just thought my knowledge could be helpful. Be honest with yourself with what you really want from your bike.

The Drz400 is extremely popular here in Australia at least in dual sport trim. However the DRZ motard is the biggest selling factory SM by a decent margin. Why? Because the DRZ's gem of a motor is as low maintenance as they come, often described as bullet proof thus requiring a fraction of the serving as other dirt bikes like KTM and Husqvarna even if ridden hard.The DRZ400 is nimble and flickable regarding street performance with a liquid engine able to handle humid temperatures in stop start traffic and being a single cylinder Enduro it is a genuine motard not a naked street bike like perhaps ducati. I love my DRZ. That said the Dr is perhaps better for highway use and more road touring duties.

Yeah I'm looking to purchase a DR650 It's actually a little cheaper then the DRZ400 & the SuperMoto 400. I used to ride in my youth.. the Canadian River in N. Texas Panhandle. Through my 20's. Now 66 LOL I'm wanting to ride again. To have a duel sport bike. I've kind of been on the fence... thinking all I need is like the Honda crf 250L. But these days I sport a pretty fat ass. So I ain't sure the 250 is gonna have the power I'm gonna need. Most likely all I'm gonna do is some jeep trails maybe some easy single track. I won't be trying to ride my old speed. But at the same time.... if I have some traffic riding now and then I want it to be respectable. The Honda 250 is tempting... it's got modern design.. F. Injection.. 6 gears … but it's weight... it's 317 and the 650 is 366 50-ish pounds difference but a butt load more power then Honda's 250. Everyone that rides these Suzkie's likes them and swears by them. I just don't know which side of the fence to fall on. Price difference isn't a factor. I donno. Good Video

If you're not doing gnarly trails and want better highway manners go with the 650. Plus the extra torque from the higher bore goes well with heavier riders

Depends on the rider. I own a DR650 and have rode both. The DRZ400 is a lot taller bike and has less power. The DR650 has a lower seat height that can be lowered another 1.5 in from factory height on top of that. Also the DR650 has a hell of a lot more torque, you will shift less and can lug it more when being lazy. I ride my DR650 a lot off road and the stock gearing is great, it will go 80mph no problem and you can lug it down low with so much torque. We have a riding buddy that had the DRZ400 and has since switched to the DR650 and loves it so much more. Not saying the DRZ400 is bad, but the DR650 is a great machine.

@MotardSteve
@MotardSteve 8 жыл бұрын
Honestly with these bikes listed, they will all commute about the same. the 650's will do better on the highway with the higher weight so they will be more stable and less prone to being blown around, but that extra weight and older tech suspension will suffer off road. Fine if you're only planning on some gravel roads and light trails but it will suck for anything tight or technical. crf250l will be good for the fuel injection, but its quite a gutless bike, but because of that it will be less intimidating to a new rider, but easy to grow out of. Honestly I'd say the DRZ would be your best choice simply because the drz isnt a widow maker, but is pretty potent for a 400. It can handle highways around 65-70 depending on how its geared. Also its around 310 lbs so will fair better if you start to do more technical off road. All the bikes you listed are super reliable. The DRZ also has the most mods out of all of them from the aftermarket. If it was me I'd say go DRZ. Or if FI is your thing I'd look at wr250's as well. Not as powerful as the drz, but plenty of people like them as they are super reliable and can make decent power once you let the motor rev out.
@FreddyTroche
@FreddyTroche 8 жыл бұрын
+MotardSteve we no have the WR here. I believe the 2016 DRZ its not available until August. DR650 will be $7k flat. i can pay that for a 650. the crf250l its $6k, for a 250 thats crazy. DRZ almost 8k. but im really thinking about the dr650. thanks!!!
@MotardSteve
@MotardSteve 8 жыл бұрын
Freddy Troche The 650 will be good if you're not wanting to get into any hooligan riding or technical trails. I'm not saying it can't do that stuff, but the extra weight is gonna make you work for it, but then again the DR does have a nice top end and weight to make it a good street machine. I'd say if you're feeling the dr then by all means go for it.

Jetted and Piped! (Same) But in 1996 Suzuki revamped the DR 650. I am not one of those who buy the first year of anything! Time and life changes so I got out of Duel Sport Riding! +AdventureCayman So I just happen to be a Master Certified Technician. ( Which Is better then a Mechanic) I Just watched this entire Vlog, And Im Here to tell you. MotardSteve Was DEAD ON , in everything he said in this video. The Basis of this video was, the DR is a more Simplified Design and is More Reliable. Which Is 100% true. Case In point, The DRZ is liquid and Oil cooled, the DR is oil cooled. The DRZ has Dual Cams, The DR has a Single cam.. How Many more Moving Parts are Involved in just those two Points I bring up? Quite a few... Thats Quite a few More Parts that can go wrong as well. We havent even Talking about total Power Output Potential. I would love to see a DRZ obtain 75 foot lbs of torque after Modifications. I OWN a DR and I would prefer a DRZ for its lightweight. But thats the only reason I would Have a DRZ over a DR.

$2500 more? Jump on that deal! Where I'm at I can get a DRZ or DR for about $7,000 OTD on a good deal, cheapest you'll find a 701 would be $12,000 OTD if you're lucky. That's a substantial difference. I'd love to get a 701 but I'm nowhere near good enough a rider to take advantage of what the 701 offers over a DR to justify the price disparity. If I had a large disposable income I'd get a 701 for sure though.

Well, as a vet with 10 years working for Uncle Sam and a retired prison guard, I hardly consider myself a prude or of a delicate nature. I just get disgusted with people who have to insert expressions that refer to bodily functions into every sentence with no reason. Maybe I got sick of listening to the "convict talk" back in the prison. Now I prefer to listen to people who express themselves with some thought and imagination. Notice, I'm NOT insulting your intelligence, just saying that it seems (to me) like a really lazy and disgusting way to express your thoughts.
