Something else to consider, for those of us that live in places (South Central Louisiana) where the roads are so rough that people flying over them in airplanes can feel the bumps I think that the DR650 supermoto would make a very good and enjoyable bike to ride. And they are not so heavy to the folks coming off of 600 +lb bikes such as a 6 cylinder Valkyrie or other cruisers. That soft long travel suspension would be a godsend here. Another plus is the air cooled simplicity, reliability, ease of maintenance and good aftermarket support what's not to like?

Finally someone did a comparison of these! And the dr650s can bring it up in fourth gear completely stock! Check out my latest video you can kinda get a glimpse of my wheelies
@MotardSteve
@MotardSteve 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah I figured I should do it since I didn't really see any online. I'm sure it will bring the front up just fine. It's just that the heavier weight is less forgiving to those like me that suck at clutching it up. Just need to sort out the timing.

its all in the technique really. im not a fan of the wr450 i ride BeRads wr and its so twitchy to me i can control wheelies on the dr better. its just preference but ive wheelie the dr 1-5 gear too and its still stock gearing it has enough balls if you get it to balance point

The weight... of a DRZ 400s is 317lbs Curb Weight.... 49lbs lighter then the DR650S. The DRZ 400 Super moto is 322lbs Curb Weight... 44lbs. lighter then the DR 650S. DR 650 S is 366 lbs. Curb Weight... all according to Suzuki's Web. site Specs. Throw in say the breathe easy kit on the 650... which is like... the FMF muffler with their power bomb header and then the Carb re jet and air box opened up some with some good KN air filters. I donno what that does for horsepower … or power to weight thing.. but it's a big big improvement . Good Video.

Bikes are like a roller coaster to me. I love the thrill of acceleration and great handling. I love sport bikes, and supermotos mainly. I don’t want a heavier supermoto or a watered down sportbike like nakeds can be. I only ride where the roads are most fun for my bikes. Id rather haul them by trailer then ride to them. For long distance, give me a convertible and a great car stereo over a goldwing or a big bmw any day, lol. Ive ridden for over 40 years and have had every kind of bike. The great thing about motorcycling is that there are lots of choices and no wrong answers within reason. The key is finding whats right for you😊.

Very true. That's one of the reasons I have a 701 now. It's still good to commute on but has double the power and less,weight of my dr650 so it can rip too. There really is no perfect motorcycle when it boils down to it. No matter what bike you have there's gonna be something you'll be left wanting in some aspect

I liked your motoblog. I have a DR650. one thing I was looking at on top of a header and exhaust and rejet is to do a big bore kit. that right there will add a lot more fun to a DR in a SM.

Glad your having fun on the bush pig as I call mine..lol! I put a good pile of cash in the aftermarket over time. But I got the bike used as new for 3k then another 3k into it to make it right for me. Plenty fast to outrun 95% of vehicles out there in acceleration for sure. You will like the pumper carb, its the best mod to start with, I have the TM40 with the Powercore 4. You can skip the header pipe as the exhaust outlet in the head isn't large nor are the valves. I just smoothed up the welds in the header pipe and opened the top of the airbox. Tons of other parts on it. The full Ricor suspension is fantastic..you can actually get some air and keep the rear wheel from hopping in the washboard bumps. Lowered wide pegs are great too for standing,,the list goes on. Great simple to work on bikes that last forever. I'm 50yrs. old and love to drift it on gravel at 80+,,and yes it will wheelie fine once you put on the pumper and drop a tooth on the front sprocket..It will still hit triple digits down one tooth easily on gps. next is a JE piston and webcam.
@MotardSteve
@MotardSteve 9 жыл бұрын
Stu650Zuk Yeah I like my bush pig too. I plan to drop a tooth in the cs and getting the tm40 and fmf powercore 4 aswell. Thanks for the suspension recommendation as I wasn't sure where to look for aftermarket suspension for the pig.
@Stu650Zuk
@Stu650Zuk 9 жыл бұрын
Check out Procycle for the suspension mods and the TM40 kit. Keintech is another real good place for the DR. Both good places to drain the wallet! The Ricor is a total replacement rear shock. It works really well without a reservoir onto it either. Great for your use having a SM conversion as well as the Ricor Intiminators for the forks. Aftermarket progressive springs work great with the Ricor inserts on the forks for your set up. The TM is simple and will come jetted for any mods you have and fine tune it from there. It will make a huge difference with even a stock pipe and the snorkel removed in the airbox. You can just twist the throttle and the front tire pops up,,lol! Makes it easier to do the wheelies without having to clutch it up.
@MotardSteve
@MotardSteve 9 жыл бұрын
Stu650Zuk thanks yeah I was looking at kientech last night already made a mod list. Lol I think I'll drop a tooth and grab the tm40 first. Since I think they would make the biggest difference. Probably grab the pipe last after the rictor suspension.

Great analysis. I just bought a 2012 DR650 with 500 original miles for 2500 American dollars. It blue books at 4200. After the restoration costs for it sitting for 5 years, I got it 25% off. Yes, its heavy. Yeah, It's kinda slow. The seat sucks and so does the suspension. However, I love to tinker. It is my first bike. Super easy to work on! upgrade options are endless. Parts are reasonably affordable. Definitely gunna bore it to a 690. Not sure if I'm gunna supermoto the damn thing anytime soon. The suspension has to go!

DR650 curb weight is 366 pounds & way lighter than my 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650 which is 492 pounds & my Honda NC700X is 472 pounds. Seriously thinking of making a DR650 supermoto for my next bike. Anyone that makes fun of the Dr 650 as being a bad road bike or supermto does not know much about them, or has never tested one They make an awesome supermoto and street bike. I owned a drz 400 and it was a great bike but in my opinion the Dr 650 far out shines it on the street and is just as good as the drz 400 in the dirt in my opinion and its a good hooligan bike . The Dr 650 has more torque and more horse power then the DRz 400 and it is noticeable . More is better . I never owned a wr 450 but good points were made in this video about them . I just think I wouldn't be happy with a wr 450 for its lack of reliability and frequent oil changes but that's just my opinion . Also Giving up one thing to compensate for the other is a good point when comparing any bike . The Triangle equation that is mentioned is the perfect example . My opinion as for a do it all 50 50 bike I will stick with the mighty Dr 650 as being superior in almost every way . The wr and drz might be lighter but in the long run the dr 650 would probable eventually pass them both up . At least on the high way anyway lol

Logan Adams To be fair that seems to be the case with a lot of the 650 class dual sports. The Honda XR650L has only seen minor changes since it debuted in the early 90's and same can be said about the Kawasaki KLR650 (only differences between Gen1 and Gen2 are cosmetic to my understanding except for 2014.5 to now which has a better suspension). The 650 dual sport class hasn't really seen much in the way of innovation like the 250 - 400cc classes have been lately.

SaltySuzi Motovlogs Dang that sucks. I always wondered why overseas places had different licenses for different engine sizes. I wonder if that adds up to safer roadways and less collisions? I know Spicy110 just got a DRZ and said something about having to take a class to get it licensed or something like that. Then again a lot of places here are starting to somewhat get that way. Idk if we will ever get to that extent, but some places now require a mandatory MSF course to get a license now instead of the DMV skills test.

The dr650 takes 80 mph way easier then then Drz 400 . That's the first thing I noticed when going from a drz 400 to a dr 650 . I'm also a heavier rider so that is why I switched . At 80 mph you are ringing the drz 400's neck. The dr650 cruises at ease at 80 mph so I'm sorry I have to disagree with you about the Dr 650 being the worst performed machine. At least when compared to the drz 400 . as I said I never rode a wr 450 .

Too many dr650s with 3rd gear issues so gone off the idea of having another one now, unless its nearly new and a bargain price for adv-TOURING. 690/701 too heavy (like the DR650) for getting over the shingle on stony beaches here (and questionable reliability, poor seat and height), drz400e lousy gear ratios but can live with that as I've done 3 times before, xr650r rare and kicking can be a problem, te610 has poor steering lock. Leaves me with trying a 450f and maybe going big bore on the dr350 - which is the right weight, low/comfy seat, 6-speed wide gear ratios... hmm, decisions

The DRZ looks cooler than the DR650. Thats why people tend to think it rides better than the DR650. Its mental. They both are heavy as fuck and have rather... I'll politely call it "basic" suspension. To put it another way, the DR650 can do anything and everythig that a DRZ400 can do. BUT, the DRZ400S cannot do everything that the WR450 can do.

SaigaExpress Do it you'll love it. If you stiffen up the stock shock as it does pretty good as a road motard. When you start to do any heavy off road is when the suspension starts to show its weaknesses. depends on what you really want it for. DR650 will be the most reliable and distance friendly. Also will have the most top end. Drz will be somewhere between the two. and wr will be as about as reliable as you get for an mx/trail bike but have a massive performance hit. After owning my DR for a year I can say while it's a great bike, it doesn't fit the true supermoto mold imo. Can you still have fun on it? of course but if you ever ride something else, you're gonna spoil it for yourself knowing this something with more power out there. At least that's how I feel. I'm actually selling my Dr this year.

@MotardSteve
@MotardSteve 8 жыл бұрын
+Acid Trippin' Pikachu If dual sport is what you want the Dr will be great. Might need some suspension upgrades to do really gnarly sections offroad as the weight doesn't do it any favors, but it's got plenty of power and torque to power through most stuff with ease. I'd say if you're not looking at anything super harsh, the dr will be great, and if you will be riding a little more advanced terrain maybe look at the drz since it's lighter and easier to manipulate off road.

ward0q1 ha the DR is a good road bike. It should come from the dealer street legal. Only thing you may want to look into is Supermoto kits from motostrano.com to make it even more road worthy.

The main reason why they aren't popular is because they aren't marketed, so the kids don't consider it. If you know bikes, you wanna commute on one and you don't care about numbers or attention; this is the bike

This is very true, the DRZ has a much wider Rev range though. The DR650 is my favorite dual sport but the DRZ is hella fun once you learn how to use the Rev range properly.

I paid $7500 for a Ducati Hypermotard 1100. You can find good deals. you just have to know how to negotiate. Walk in with a wad of cash in your hand. I guarantee they will find what you want. Either that day, or a few weeks later.

+Paul Colburn Ducati's are lovely bikes but have too many issues. Italian electrics are crap and the bikes aren't that reliable. I had a 900 Monster for 6 months and returned it to the dealer, utter shite, never again.

DRZ more like 320 lbs. DR is around 50 lbs more than the DRZ. The DR is the easiest to work on. It's all about compromises. We'll take a DR650 any day.

David & Elizabeth dr650 weighs 357 wet, only ~30 lbs more than DRZ400. With some mods, can get dr650 basic down to 340's lbs. If Suzuki update the DRZ400 with fuel injection, air cool engine, 6 spd, it would a supremo supermoto/duel purpose bike. I am guessing 15lbs lighter if DRZ400 goes air cool. DRZ400 is a perfect size if only Suzuki update this 15 years technology bike and make it air cool. the WR450f weighs 273 lbs wet OEM. With higher sticker price and maintenance cost, it's not worth supermotoring the 450f for me unless one is into stunting.

Exactly that's the reason I own a 701 Supermoto now. That torque is crazy.

350 lbs isn't exactly a "supermoto"

Might not be the lightest, but it's still got all the fun factor of a sumo and that's all that matters to me.

I suppose, just weird to compare the wr450f to the drz400 and dr650. The wr450f is probably the closest you can get to a race supermoto that's also streetable and it's not that common. Should have probably compared the wr250x/drz400sm/husky610sm/690SMC/dr650, more common, factory street legal.

This depends on what your looking for. "Race" supermoto's usually need a lot of care. Valve checks, short oil change interval, new piston, top or bottom end rebuild. The 650 and the not race moto bikes are less time working on and more time riding. Yea the race ones do the best but not a lot of people are in a race. We just want to ride.

Горбунков Семён Семёныч I mean I was pretty new to it all at the time and it did serve me well for the year and a half I had it, but as soon as I rode a ktm 450 exc sumo, it was all over.
