There are a lot more differences to the S and the SM, and also a few that aren't correct. I'm sorry to be that guy, but this video is meant to give advice on the differences. I've had both setups, if you need to swap them, you'll realise what you're in for. The tire size is the width, a percentage of that width as height and rim size. So 120mm, 70% of 120 mm, 17. The front forks are very different and do not have the same compression and rebound rates, especially since the SM forks are adjustable. It is not whether they're USD or conventional, it's what they're designed to do. The other major difference is that the SM fork is shorter, it is not just the wheel as the tire is much taller. It also has a much shorter stroke, so wouldn't do as well off-road. Besides this, there are no gators on the forks, so you get a lot of dirt in the seals, which wear out faster. Rocks can also chip the chrome, cutting the seals and exposing bare metal. The Desert Sled has the same issues. The offset on the triple trees is different as well, where the SM has very little offset (centre of forks are in line with centre of headstock) the S has some more offset to make it more stable on uneven terrain. Low offset gives a much sharper steering feel, which is why racing bikes have the same setup, with a much steeper headstock angle. The SM still has a motocross frame. Axle location makes big difference as well. With the SM it is underneath the fork, so the wheelbase (where the rubber touches the ground) is shorter as well (along with the offset), making it easier to turn. The S has the axle above the bottom on the outside, to both give a longer stroker and adding to the rake and trail, making it more stable. The swingarm is different as well; the kink is further towards the engine, to accommodate the 150 rear, and the chain tensioner is different. The SM uses a block with a bolt and locknut, as well as a hollow rear axle, while the S has two snails with a pin to adjust tension and a solid steel axle with a nut attached. The blocks are more precise and the shaft lower the rotation mass, so it costs less power to rotate, while the snails are fast and easy, with a very strong steel axle. The fixed nut makes maintenance faster as well, which you would do more off on an offroad bike. The SM also has a shorter rear shock to not sit too high in the rear. I parked my SM next to an S and the difference was a few inches at least. This is also a stiffer shock to help with cornering. Sorry for the epistle, but if people come to look for info on the differences on the SM and S, this is pretty much it.

You seem like you know what you are talking about. Perhaps you could give me some advice. I'm currently riding a scooter but I'm thinking about the next bike I'm going to get. I won't go into details but I'm leaning towards a dual sport. However, most of my riding will be on road. Therefore, I'm thinking about getting a sumo, or more likely a dual sport which I will try to convert for road use (not much of a sumo used marked where I live). The one thing that is bothering me is sumo (dual sport) handling compared to a standard (naked) bike. Given that sumo is basically a dirt bike conversion, it should have worse handling than a standard bike that's built for comfortable riding on roads. (higher center of gravity and longer suspension) Am I correct in thinking that? Do sumo (or converted dual sport) bikes handle noticeably worse than standard bikes? If you feel like answering, could you please go into some details on this.. Thanks a lot!
@Yvolve4 жыл бұрын
Peter Koperdan The main difference between making a dual sport nice for the road but still good offroad, and an SM good on road but also nice for offroad is very different. The suspension setup is very different, but in the case of the DRZ you can buy a second suspension setup and swap it in a day. If you need to ride far to go offroad and also want to daily drive it, get a dual sport with less aggressive tires. A few teeth less on the rear sprocket for more top speed, but you'll lose torque down low. Handling is mediocre because it is set up for off road. If you only do a bit of gravel and light off roading you can get away with having aggressive tires on an SM although they're hard to find in that size. It's also not as nice to ride tires that big off road. The suspension isn't nearly as long as the dual sport version is. There's a ton of different dual sports. If you look at Africa Twins or Ténéré's, you see the difference. They're much heavier and meant for long distance off road, like the Dakar. The BMW GS1200R is the same thing but for rich people. Road bike are of course purpose built and won't work off road. The DRZ is much lighter and easier and is decent on both terrain. The DRZ came from a motocross chassis, the SM was only made because there was a Supermoto championship in France in 2005. They're the first road legal, factory Supermoto for general sale. It's meant to race on go kart and short tracks, so the wheel base is good. I daily drove my SM for a long time, lots of highway, about a 110 km/h is decent with 15/39 sprockets. It would suck off road though, although it still had enough torque to wreck the chain. I rode it really hard as well. They're tractors. I killed the big end on mine and put another 15.000km on it with good oil. Bit of clunking and banging

@@Yvolve Thanks a lot for your reply. And how about SM handling vs standard bike handling (on road)? Is SM comparable or am I better off with a standard bike? Bit difficult to express my thoughts.. but I would like a bike like Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled. Only MUCH cheaper and more reliable. What I like about dual sport bikes is how functional and bulletproof they are. I don't want a high maintenance primadonna of a bike. That said, I don't need too much off road capabilities. I will be riding mostly road and some unpaved roads/paths or let's say really shitty roads. I am worried that a dual sport is a bad choice for mostly road riding. That's why I was thinking about converting it to a SM. However, I also don't need the SM capabilities (whatever they are). How bad are dual sports on road compared to something like Honda CBs? And is it possible to convert a dual sport to something like Ducati Scrambler (as far as handling is concerned, not aesthetics)? Thanks ;-)

In fact, I think a R1, GSX1000 etc are the real beginners bike as most motorbikes noobs are into those overpowered bikes for show and bragging rights more than actual riding. I can say from experience the worst off road you'd want to put on your DRZ would be an actual dirt/gravel or grated road, and even then you had sharp rocks that are straight tire killers sometimes. the 400 S would be better since the tires are made to be upright 99% of the ride but the main concern would be having your bike slide out from under you just because of the loose ground. still though it's nice to take your bike down a dirt road every so often, rarely have traffic and the only other thing you have to watch out for besides rocks is the occasional cow and/or feral hog.

The DRZ400 is not a bike that's absolutely perfect at one particular thing, but it does everything quite well for what it is. It's kind of a " Jack Of All Trades " kinda bike. Looking to do the suspension on mine, and probably the 470 ( 462 cc ) motor since I'm really only lacking the Web cams ( maybe ) / Stroker crank / 1 piece valve's the springs and seats and obviously the rejetted BSR will have to be swapped out to feed it. As it stands right now, 434 BBK CP 12.5 ratio piston, stage 2 HotCams, TT MCCT, E model single layer base gasket ( makes it 13 : 1 ratio ), the 3x3 and JD jetted BSR with a TwinAir foam filter ( I ride both on and off road and have S and SM wheels ) with an RS3 yoshi, Raptor fuel tap, LED everything and with the tail tidy, Corbin seat, Renthal bars with Zeta drop downs and Zeta XC shields with an R6 tube and a fan mod as for current mods. Did one track day ( was a blast ) and alot of mixed up riding ( on and off road ), it's kinda hard to get tired of it but very easy to find trouble 😆

Example 140/50-18 140 mm /25.4 = roughly 5.5 inches wide 5.5 inches * 50% = 2.75 inches 5.5 inches times 2 ( rubber on top and bottom) + rim diameter (18") = 23.5 inch tall tire

Off road you want upside down forks too but suzuki refuses to change blue prints on the drz-s look at modern mx AND enduro forks

90 is NOT the height of the SM front tire...it is 90% of 120.

There's a lot of misinformation in this. To quickly summarise. Forks are longer on the S model and have a bit more travel, they're also not adjustable. Swing arm is shorter on the sm. Those aren't the OEM Brake discs on the sm although they do seem to be the same size as OEM. Gearing is also different on the sm and s

i recently bought a DRZ 400S but havnt been able to ride much cause snow in michigan, i have 50 road 50 dirt tires that came on it but i wanna move to 60 dirt 40 road for next set and then 70 dirt 30 road and continue it til full knobbies, how big of tire can i go? because the dinky 50 50 tires are super skinny and just make me nervous and yea like spite said their upright or feel like they falling over, i want as big as i can go with knobbies without rubbing anything, how big can i go on it?

Last bike was a Honda XR 650 R, it was a little too tall, it shook, vibration, you can't go 20 miles and still feel your hands and feet and it was kinda a bitch to kick start. I want a SM. I wonder why Suzuki still puts carburetor on the drz?? EFI is better. My son had a CRF 250 R with EFI and that thing made amazing power for a 4 stroke 250.
