Are you freaking out over every new Moth Orchid growth and confused whether it is a new flower stalk or just another root? This video will explain and show you the difference!
For further reference, check out the blog post that I wrote on the topic as well!

Ah! I’ve been following your advice and info on orchids since last year when I inherited my mother’s orchid after she passed. It now has a flower stalk! Just an extra sweetness to it that I was able to do it in honor of her love for orchids. Thank you!

That makes me so happy to hear! I'm so sorry to hear about your mother though, but you now have a living memory of her :-)

Thank you for the info!!! I used to clip off the stalks and try to get them to grow roots. Now I know the difference between a root and a stalk! Oh my! Plants are SO complicated!! You are a TRUE GENIUS with a GIFT!!!

I have an orchid that has roots where the blooms were. Should I cut them off and pot them?

It sounds like your plant is growing a keiki, which is a baby orchid. Sorry for the late reply! I'd wait until leaves grow too, and then cut it off and pot it up. Remember that the small plants will need a good amount of moisture to continue growing so you'll have to baby the plant initially.

I put a flower stalk in water, and a branch is growing from it. There are no roots….what should I do? Plant it or leave it in water?

Planting a flower stalk that has been cut off won't work. It sounds like your flower stalk is growing a side branch which will grow more flower buds. I'd just leave it in water and hope that the resulting flower buds will open! :-)

Awww, sorry to hear that. There is really nothing you can do. Just routine care for your plant. I've done it before too, and I feel your pain!

My phaelenopsis has a secondary spike with roots. Can I cut this off and repot it?

Sorry for the late reply! Sounds like it is growing a keiki, or baby orchid. You should start to see leaves too. I would wait until it grows leaves and is maybe 2-3 inches long and then cut it off and pot it up!

Although I’ve always known the difference it was hard for me to explain to customers how to differentiate between the two. THE MITTEN is key, even though I sometimes forget and say to look for a “paw” or “hoof”! But when you see those smooth tips coming out...you’re looking at an aerial root. Such a great video that everyone needs to watch!

Do know what promotes new leaf growth in Phals? I’m only 2 years in to growing and a lot of my collection has started new leafs. Is it just after the flowers come and go? Because that’s what I always thought but some are giving me new leaves while growing new spikes, while still having old spikes and some with none. Thanks for the video.

Danielle Sharp Having the correct light and overall good growing conditions will promote leaf growth. But these plants won't put out a lot of new leaves. Maybe one or two a year or so! Mine normally will grow leaves after a big bloom, but it can happen at any time during active growth.

Ohio Tropics thank you!! This makes sense. The ones that are all shooting up new leaves are mini phals (which I’ve noticed can handle a little more sun than the bigger ones) I moved them to a different window in my home about 3/4 weeks ago and are receiving more light. But I didn’t put the two together. I just always related not enough sunlight = no blooms.
