"He visited a topless bar and met a woman named Joan, who worked there. Joan had a difficult childhood. She was traumatized by both her parents, who abandoned her. At age 18 she married a man who mistreated her..." I genuinely don't know the details of this story, but the background has more red flags than a 1950s May Day parade at the Kremlin.

Wow. My mom and I used to have a very strained relationship. She was emotionally and physically abusive when I was growing up but the physical part stopped when I was 16 (when her own mother passed away) I think back to those years to how badly I wanted her to love me and how I tried to substitute that missing love with random boys and drugs. Being so immature and broken at that young age I am ashamed to admit what lengths I might have gone to to finally feel loved and win her approval. I don't think I could have brought myself to kill another person but the desperation and eagerness was overwhelming. If that really is how the story played out, Joan is the lowest of the low. She knew exactly what she was doing. All she cared about was herself. And all for what??? A piece of side action. Truly disgusting.

@@bthomson yes I have forgiven her a long time ago. As I got older I realized how hard she had it. My dad left in the middle of the night when I was in third grade and I never heard from him not one time until I was 19. My mother became a "functioning" alcoholic. She worked 70+ hours a week at a dollar store (on salary pay of course, so no overtime/time and half pay) and we had no child support or food stamps. She didn't date at all so I'm sure she was lonely. But mostly she was just very overwhelmed. When I was in middle school I was "bratty" and very ungrateful for what she could do. I would openly voice my disappointment when my back to school clothes shopping was done at Family Dollar and Dollar General... Just things like that. Not saying I deserved the kinds of things she did and said. But I understand more how hard it was for her. I wish she hadn't taken out her frustration on me though. We struggled for years after I left home. But two years ago I got very sick and slipped into a coma for 9 days and was in the hospital for 45 days total. After everything she's said and done it didn't matter how strained our relationship was. As soon as I was awake enough to talk I cried and asked for "my mommy." It took a week for the hospital to get ahold of my family but when they did she was the first person I remember seeing . I was still in and out of consciousness and on a lot of pain meds and even hallucinating but there she was sitting in a chair pulled up right up against my bed. When I was discharged a month and half later it was her who picked me up and she had set up my old room for me. This case with Joan and Elizabeth is so infuriating bc I know how horrible it feels to want that love and how amazing it feels when/if something changes and you get a chance to feel what a loving mother daughter relationship can and should be like. I think Joan used her daughter as a pawn. Joan planned that for months- buttering her up taking her out to eat and to movies and whatnot. I hope Elizabeth can manage to get truly rehabilitated while in prison...come to terms with the murder she committed and seek forgiveness from God and from her family. Maybe the second half of her life will better than the first.

I completely agree when you said that “Joan had a terrible understanding of love.” The lack of love and attention while growing up, made her unable to foster strong and meaningful relationships. The way she treated those around her was shallow and manipulative. In my opinion, she spent her life and did whatever was necessary to get the attention and “love” that she never got as a child. I am not justifying her actions nor do I think that everyone in her situation would do the same. However, in this case I believe that her childhood had an important role on the way she navigated the world. Excellent analysis Dr. Grande, thank you.❤️

Saville was a special guest on the show, and kids were asking him questions. One particularly nerdy kid (trying way too hard to sound older and more sophisticated than his few years on Earth) tried to ask Saville an overly sophisticated question but fluffed it, prompting Saville to gently, but persistently tear into that kid, completely humiliating him with sinister relish: never cared for him after that moment.

Prison is odd. I'm not so sure it should be about punishment. As we know, free will is a myth. Prison should sequester dangerous people from the rest of society. US law is based upon free will. It's about the most Christian part of US constitutional law and it is seriously in need of scrapping for more defensible modus operandi. An ideal prison would not always contain different people that it contains now, but the purpose for their incarceration would be different and set a different tone.

I've been a fan of you Dr. Grande from under 1000 viewers, but two things here bother me. 1. Interchanging "dad" and "step-dad" especially when the fact that the victim was not the perpetrator's biological dad was one cause for the rift and crime. I don't think she would have pulled the trigger on her biological dad. 2. The Girl was only 15 - you know her brain and reasoning mechanisms are not fully formed. Add to this, the mother's past, lifestyle, and attachment style to her, and you have a recipe for a puppet. The mother was the puppeteer. I'm not saying the daughter gets nothing, but for pleading guilty she got zero leniency. I feel like her defense attorney did her an injustice, just like her mom did. So sad. I know you are clinical, and an INTP, as am I Dr. G. But a little more compassion for this child. I know it is overused, but she is a victim also.

I think the sentence for the daughter of 20+ years is harsh too. That being said, this case is as rare as children that kill their natural parents. In fact we read more about children that kill their natural parents than we do step children that kill their adoptive parents. It's possible for a child to have just as much contempt for their natural parents (which is to say Elizabeth's contempt meter was obviously *almost* pegged). Her initial reaction to refuse the request by her mother says it was not as maxed-out as children that kill their otherwise innocent parents without prompt, without compel from others.

@@troy3456789 it's not about her relationship with her step-dad, my comment was about being consistent in his summary. I didn't Ike how Dr. G kept interchanging the word, only because her biological dad could have come into the story later. That's all. It's wasn't a remark on love or caring or bonding or relationship. And I truly believe she would have done whatever her mother wanted to whomever. That mother is horrible. The daughter needs intense therapy. She is not a threat to society. She should pay for her crime, but again, at 15 a person is not fully functioning.

@@MeMe-mt6xv I agree with you that she's more of a victim (first of her depraved mother and father, now of the justice system). In the case of Elizabeth, I can get behind the idea of sequestering her from peaceful society at least for a time, because it didn't take much for her mother to talk her into premeditated murder of her provider and benefactor. During her sequestration from peaceful but vulnerable society, she should only be in contact with those dedicated to helping her out of her worldview that creates nothing but needless suffering for herself and others. She needed to be freed of that, otherwise it is entirely possible she will be hell-on-wheels upon her physical liberation.

I'd of been okay with a decade sentence for Elizabeth, as long as the state can provide intense mental health treatment for her. All the problems she has is rooted in the depravity of her parents. Undo that, and it could release her from her own shackles of misery. I'm uncertain 'mental health' (as it is) is enough of a science yet enough to help her at this point in time though. There is a lot of mental health clinicians that promote faith-based religion, and that needs to be scrapped altogether for something more defensible such as mindfulness, ethics training and theory.

I believe Joan did indeed pressure Elizabeth to kill her step father. I don’t think Joan possessed any maternal feelings towards her children, specifically Elizabeth. Sadly, Elizabeth was nothing but a pawn in Joan’s eyes. I feel Elizabeth’s sentence was excessive. She was a very troubled 15 yo girl who was desperate for her mothers attention and affection. I think with the proper therapy (which just doesn’t happen in the US prison system) she could learn to deal with her trauma and perhaps live a productive life.

My analysis...the step father was molesting Elizabeth and Joan did nothing to protect her Daughter. This is evident by her trying at the end to be a good parent..in the end she failed. To get back at her parents, Elizabeth planned on killing them both but couldn't bring herself to pull the trigger on the mother. Still holding contempt for her mother..she implicated her in his death. Happens everyday.

Interesting how quickly people judge "bad" children, but not bad parenting. Both of this girl's legal guardians chose to live as mattresses but when asked what was going on, the so called family members were quick to point out the character flaws of a neglected child. Every adult involved in this madness should have been charged with child neglect. They were all living like sewer rats. And that girl should have been placed in some therapy and related services, NOT prison. America is riddled with neglectful parents who bear no responsibility or consequences. Meanwhile children are paying the price.

@@zenawarrior7442 my point? It's pretty clear. I'm just stating that we might not hear about the cases where everything goes well and thus have biased perspectives. For instance, I don't think most swingers neglect their kids. It's usually older couples that have adult kids and want to spice up their marriages and stuff, I think. It's just an interesting topic to me. Like today I was at the grocery store and vogue magazine had an article "Is Monogamy Dead" or something, and it gave me a spooky feeling. And I do know a few people that seek a polyamorous lifestyle and I wonder if it's truly unhealthy or if some people just can't handle it. I think I would feel insecure and scared my partner would develop feelings for the other person like Joan did for Jeff, but I might feel differently if I was married for 20 years and counting the years I had left to have fun in life.

@@zenawarrior7442 I hope the extremeness of my sarcasm came through on my comment, it was completely a joke, I hope that came through- I actually agree with you 💯!!- I don't understand that lifestyle at all! I'm not one to judge, but yeah, the diseases running rampant, as well as the fact that in my opinion, sex should be much more of a special connection between 2 people who care about each other- I don't see any way the "Swinger Lifestyle" doesn't lead to disaster. I was just trying to be funny with my comment. I have known friends or people who have tried "open marriage", and in the few cases I've known people personally, EVERY ONE ended up falling for someone else they were "having fun with" and they all ended up divorced. Sad bc in all 3 cases kids were involved, just feels extremely selfish with kids involved, but again, I do try not to judge people for adult choices. Hard to see how that one could ever go well though!! Just wanted to make CLEAR my first comment there was a TOTAL joke! Another great one. I like the emphasis on how much power a mother has over a teen daughter, and how the sudden interest her mom paid her (as well as the incessant haranguing) could strongly influence Elizabeth's choice. I wish we knew more about what she believed before the killing might be the outcome. Did she believe her mom would cover for her? DId she believe their stories would be good enough to fool the cops? Did she already know she was bound for prison but thought she would not get a heavy sentence? I would love to have been a little mouse listening to them discuss that.

Maybe she harms almost everyone in her life after she is released. It's good reason to be compassionate with everyone we have in our lives, because we are all affecting one another in one way or another. We can inspire each other to be our best selves; or we can breed contempt, dishonesty, anger, jealousy, mindlessness, ignorance, laziness and entitlement, and literally steal the happiness from others in their lives, like waves going out in a pool from a stone being thrown into it.

“Major Shannon’s Mistake”: Even though Major Shannon had some abilities he wasn’t especially bright. Why should I make these rather less than complimentary remarks? First off, why spend time and money at topless bars? It doesn’t make any sense. It’s ridiculous and wasteful. Second why get involved with a nymphomaniac? It can’t possibly end well as we will see in this narrative. Third, why for god’s sake get involved with troubled teenagers. Only morons makes these choices. Therefore Major Shannon might have been good material for the army, but he was a complete failure as a human being. Thank you!

I am very skeptical of Joan (the Mother) being involved in the murder. Elizabeth was furious that her stepfather was disciplining her and all the so called evidence was based on what Elizabeth said. At the end of the Dateline when both were given a chance to speak, Joan spoke to Elizabeth and I believed her words. Elizabeth refused. I believe she falsely accused her Mother and couldn't look her in the eye. Elizabeth planned it all, including disposing of the gun. Joan would not involve so many people, IMO
