Mother Gothel's Tragic Story in Tangled (Disney)

What if... Mother Gothel DID know best? We don't know very much about her after-all, and she had lived for CENTURIES! Think of all the things she's seen and lived through. It's unfortunate that Disney's Tangled only picks up at the end of hers, so follow me as I delve (too) deeply into "who was Mother Gothel?"

For this animated brainstorm / fun Tangled theory, I'm looking again at the Brothers Grimms' fairy tale "Rapunzel" and seeing how it tracks with Disney's "Tangled." These tales are so different, it's quite a fun adventure, as always! But, in both Grimm and Disney, I've always felt like Mother Gothel got quite the raw deal, even though she was just minding her own dang business, doing all the cool things witches do!
A single drop of sunshine, preserved for centuries under the care and protection of Mother Gothel. But, honestly, how long do you think such a beautiful gift would have lasted in the Kingdom of Corona if it hadn’t been for Mother Gothel's guardianship of it? I doubt the royal family tried to use a single leaf at first to try to brew the potion - you know, NOT kill the whole flower off the bat. Luckily, that power survives and thrives in a new form: the child, and I’d like to think it could have continued passing on down the generations had Flynn Rider not cut Rapunzel’s hair. Think of all the healing that could have been passed along throughout the kingdom! So many healers as time went on! If ONLY Mother Gothel (and the whole Kingdom?!) had acted differently, this Tangled story of Rapunzel could have been quite a beautiful story of sharing! Also, is Mother Gothel a Goddess? Is she a Witch?

@Elalae La so, them using either a petal or the whole flower doesn’t matter, because they still used up all of the flower’s magical capabilities.

Depends on the Tradition of Magic they pull the Ritual from. In an Alchemic Potion or Brew, they may have pulled individual petals- in magic, there are different rules.

So, they actually go into this. In Tangled the Series they show the flower again, its full, they only used on petal from the flower BUT the flower lost all its power when it was used to heal the queen, the power went into Rapunzel. They even tried to use the flower, grind it up and try and make it useable to heal something in the show but it doesn't work due to it no longer having its power.

Agreed. Also, another thing worth mentioning from the series - destroying the flower ended up causing an unbalance in the world, and the king was actually warned about the disasters that could happen as a result, but he went ahead with the decision to uproot it anyway. To be fair, he was trying to save his wife and unborn child, but still.

It would have been extra dark if Mother Gothel killed baby Rapunzel and buried her body, soon sprouting from her grave is... a new shining flower bud 🌼 if the kingdom was able to transfer the power into soup, there’s no reason it wouldn’t find another way to manifest itself back if it found a transferable method

I mean, inside the flower and rapunzel was the sundrop (which is the only thing that really matters and it can't be destroyed, so the flower being used for soup and rapunzels hair being cut doesn't matter since the sundrop is always somewhere), so that seems like a highly likely outcome.

Want a backstory? Copy the 'Pardoes legendarium' from internet and translate it. Damn that's ahead of Disney's level If you're too lazy for that, let's summarize it: Okay so basically, there is this galaxy where Symbolica is in the middle (Most important planet of the many). A little boy was found in the misty woods by this old woman Aliciana. She adopts the boy and calls him 'Pardoes' (Dutch for 'out of the blue'). Aliciana is the ex-classmate of wizard Almar, who is the royal advisor of King Pardulfus, the king of Symbolica. Pardoes grows up and meets his crush Pardijn, daughter of Pardulfus. Few years later the stereotypical bad guy appears and his name is Pantagor, assisted by his rat Rattar. He calls 11 curses one by one on Symbolica and Almar suspects Pardoes of being the chosen one. Pantagor also used to be the chosen one but chose the dark side. All the curses are gone and Pardoes needs to duel Pantagor, and he wins. Almar has trust issues because of Pantagor and doesn't trust Pardoes, he underrates him. But the stereotypical protagonist that he is wins and society is cool again. Pardoes will never know what happens to his parents but really wants to find out, whereas Pardijn wants to help him. Let alone that I only summarised it lmfao

It doesn't matter, the flower isn't the only thing that had the ability to heal. It was only the first host of the sundrop, which was then passed to rapunzel, who still had its power inside her even after her hair was cut, as you can see in the series. The thing that really matters here is the sundrop, which can't really be destroyed. The flower and rapunzel were just the sundrops hosts.

She was willing to do what ever it took to protect the flower. She would have killed the guards to do so if it weren't the fact that they had numbers. She's both deadly and smart, it's not in the realm of possible that she decided that she would be better off to wait and steal the flower back. Plus let's not forget that we know that the flower can bring people from the dead, she decided for herself to keep it. She could have shared it but that's not what she did. Plus I feel have to make it known, she was already a mother by that point and that she abandon her own daughter just to have the power of the flower back. There's nothing good about this woman, but if you have a good argument against this I would love to hear it

Movie Gothel was a doofus because she had centuries to get that flower out of their, put it in a pot and take it home where it's safe or build her house near it or even just put a sign up that says "Property of Mamma G trespassers with be stabbed." Instead she left it out in the open where it was inevitable that someone would find it. Also I recommend the Tangled series. It's oodles of fun and we get to see a bit more of Gothel not going to spoil anything.

I almost 100% agree with Abit on Gothel being put into the situation and other people being selfish with the flower's magic. You think about all these other villains who do horrible things because they want power, revenge, or simply want to watch other people suffer. Gothel did everything she did out of desperation and because she felt like she had no one else to turn to. Still evil, but not nearly as evil as every other villain. Abit does fail to take into consideration that the lack of connection between the sundrop and moonstone would have destroyed the kingdom instead of continually healing it though, which is another reason Gothel was a good guardian of it.

so, as much as i love this, i have a few points [SPOILERS FOR TANGLED THE SERIES. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU WATCH IT, ITS AMAZING] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . TL;DR: Gothel was selfish and vain long before the show started. no one else knew about the songs. Gothel was the last one around who knew anything about the songs. so the royal family would have only known to uproot it. while the hair might have passed down the lines, Corona would have been destroyed during that time. the black rocks from Tangled the Series (which IS canon) would have spread until either the sundrop reunited with the moonstone, or they took over the earth and ended all life. Mother Gothel was not healing forest creatures, she lived in a hut with her daughter and only used to flower to restore her own youth. more info from the show: Gothel was born in the pre-Corona era. she started off as one of three assistants of a scientist and magician named Demanitus. their goal was to find the sundrop and its counterpart, the moonstone. eventually, Demanitus' main partner, a warlock named Zhan Tiri, betrays him, wanting to take the power for herself. she also convinces his three assistants, Gothel included, to follow her instead. Demanitus is able to capture Zhan Tiri in an alternate dimension, while also containing one of his old followers in a magical device, though the other two remain on the loose. then he puts his soul into a monkey in order to watch for the sundrop. gothel is one of two assistants who remains free. she builds a cottage and does eventually find the sundrop, the flower. she uses it purely for her own goals, as to her, being beautiful is most important. she keeps magical mirrors documenting all the complements on her looks that hse gets. she is vain and prideful. eventually during her life, she has a daughter named Cassandra, who she uses for no other purpose than to ensure the cottage stays clean. four years later, the flower is taken by the royal family, who know nothing of the song to activate it. Rapunzel is born, now possessing the flowers magic, the new incarnation of the sundrop. Gothel kidnaps her and takes her back to the cottage while being chased by royal guards. however, instead of going in to the cottage, where Cassandra still is, she tricks the guards into going to the cottage, cuts the one bridge connecting it to the main land, and runs away to the tower, abandoning her own daughter in the process. Disney Gothel technically DID start off good. but due to the corruption of Zhan Tiri, she became cruel and greedy, wanting nothing more than to stay young and beautiful forever, and viewing everyone, including her own blood, as simply tools she could use to achieve that goal. still a good video.

I see Disney, I click. If she did become the baby's nurse and unlocked her power. The royal family could have become overprotective, keeping her in the castle. They would've given her whatever she wanted at the cost of her freedom. Enter Flynn Ryder, her total opposite. A guy who has his freedom (you know, until he gets caught) but striving to have money.... They meet under some circumstances, ran away, blah blah blah. I can still see a Disney movie plot! You could make Gothel the strict and physically vain but loving governess who sees herself in Rapunzel! She could've had a peaceful death, finally finding a purpose and letting immortality go because she found someone to love. Having someone to love would have made her see that immortality isn't worth it if the people around her would perish (maybe make rapunzel not able to heal herself to avoid a plot hole). Edit: That beautiful song could've still made it through! Mother Gothel could have her own verse, while she's worried sick about Rapunzel not because she lost her flower but her daughter! She saw the light. The fog has lifted. *cries in flower power*

Secondly, there's an upcoming Twisted Tale called "What Once was Mine," which will play with the idea of the guards finding a different flower to save Queen Arianna instead of the sundrop flower Gothel uses. There's more to that one, but I'm waiting to get a copy to read for myself. There's also Serena Valentino's take on Gothel's origins called "Mother Knows Best," revealing she had sisters and that before being locked in the tower, Rapunzel and Gothel stayed with someone named Nanny.

Okay, so I noticed that the way you described the original is slightly different from how I learned it. Basically, Rapunzel's biological parents only every wanted for a child. When they got a child, however, the mother became distant and obsessed with the lettuce from the witch's garden. In an attempt to appease his wife, the father broke in and tried to steal the lettuce. However, he was caught by Gothel. I don't remember exactly the course of events here, but I think that Gothel said that she would let him live and let him have the plant in exchange for the firstborn child. So the parents did have a motive to break in and take the Rapunzel plant.

In adding to the fact that Gothal loved living in Tangled the series with creation of Gothal’s biological daughter, it hinted at the fact that she loved the attention specifically from men a little too much and is at least one reason why she desired to stay young. Nope, nope, nope. Gothel in the Disney movie is absolutely the bad guy. No question. She kidnapped, isolated, and constantly gaslit and emotionally manipulated Rapunzel, and then, when Rapunzel stood up for herself, she bound and gagged her and stabbed the man Rapunzel had fallen in love with, who was her first real friend (not counting Pascal). And in the series (spoiler alert), it's shown that she served an evil being and also had a biological daughter who she treated like a servant instead of a daughter, and then abandoned her to run off with Rapunzel, who, again, she kidnapped. I was only 16 when I saw the movie the first time, but even back then, I recognized the abuse, even if it was only subconsciously. I can't understand why anyone can see the way she treats both Rapunzel and Cassandra and still make excuses for her or think she somehow loved Rapunzel. To quote you: Red flag, red flag, red flag, red flag. Sorry, but it really gets under my skin that people still side with Gothel. I was gaslit and emotionally abused by my mother, as unintentional as it may have been, and it infuriates me how it's still not taken as seriously by society as physical or sexual abuse. No form of abuse is okay. Gothel is no good guy, at all.

I always thought that whole movie would never have happened if Gothel just uprooted the flower and took it back to her home to hide it. But what if doing that or even taking from the flower (Roots, leaves, petals, etc) destroyed its healing properties? When Rapunzel's hair was cut, the magic goes away, so what if the same happens with the flower itself? That may explain why they had to use the entire plant to save Rapunzel and her mother. Also, someone else in the kingdom had to have known about the flower and its magic for them to come up with that cure in the first place, or maybe it was a total shot in the dark if it would work at all? Anyway, that's some of my thoughts. Love your videos!

One of them has vivid blond hair and yellow eyes, and suffered through a lot, so Gothel goes a lot out of her way to care for him. But one day she is cursed to look hideous, scaring away the other kids, but this one stays and still likes her. Then one day he dies, and leaves behind the flower, which showed the power of his bright nature, and Gothel, in despair, swears to protect it at all costs. His soul is kind of still in there, so he, in return, returns her to her normal self so that the kids are no longer scared of her and so that she mustn't be alone forever. Then the queen just eats it, and.... yeah.

This video seems to try to imply that mother gothel was keeping the flower secret and alive because she wanted to protect it, which is kind of obviously not what she was doing... she only wanted it for its healing powers, which becomes clear when you see how she doesn't care at all that the flower was destroyed to save the queen since the power was transferred to rapunzel. As long as there was _something_ in the world that had the ability to heal her, she didn't care. Not that the flower being destroyed actually matters at all lore-wise, since in the tv series it's made clear that the sundrop which was previously inside the flower is now inside rapunzel- yes, even after her hair was cut, since the sundrop can't really be destroyed. Additionally, the flower isn't really mother gothels to use/"keep safe," by law it's owned by whoever owns the land it was on, which is most likely the king and queen because the flower was kind of just in the middle of nowhere...

tangled: the series is not a direct continuation of the movie, it is a spinoff series, to be honest, it is basically an alternate universe

Your idea about the power becoming a part of the royal bloodline reminds me of the royal family of Hyrule in the Legend of Zelda games, with Princess Zelda having the golden power that goes down the line and gives her greater powers.

If you look at before Rapunzel, Tangled the series shows that Gothels daughter was left behind for Rapunzel. Pretty evil to me.

I think Rapunzel the Series should be taken into account since it does go into her backstory and such.

Well there are good points in this thought, but even if gothels capturing of rapunzel is caused by the kingdom it doesn't excuse it and the tone of the video sounded a bit biased but maybe thats just me. Though its kinda nice listening it with your lovely voice

I agree using the entire flower is a bad move. However mother Gothel ran and hid from the guards when they looked for the flower, the way she acted was as if she herself was doing something wrong, she hid because ultimately she knew what she was doing it wrong. Disneys version made her the bad guy to begin with

Mother Gothel is so interesting to think about as a character analysis. There is just so much to unpack.

I actually thought of this very interesting backstory for Gothel, in which she loves children, and has a lot under her care. Then the queen just eats it, and.... yeah. This obviously isn't suitable for movie or book Gothel, in neither does she act as if this happened, but it's still pretty cool

Mother Gothel is archeotypical representation of the darker side of Mother Earth, goddess of fertility known in so many mythologies around the world. Those goddesses do have their dark sides, which is... well, it is clearly depicted in movie. Being so possessive over their children that they are denying them freedom and suffocating them. Demeter is the perfect example, she nearly destroyed the world to get her daughter Persephone back, when she was dragged down to the underworld with Hades, and every time Persephone leaves her and go back to Hades (winter) she starts destroying world again untill her daughter comes back. Aphrodite is also a good example. You know those common stories about mother in law hating and despicing her daughter in law because she is sooo jelous that her son loves some other woman more then her? Well, in the story of Psyche and Eros, Aphrodita was torturing Psyche and attempted to kill her for that reason. Long story short, Gothel is the perfect depiction of Mother Earth's dark side.

This theory is all well and good until you see the "Tangled" animated series. It fills out a lot of backstory, and we learn that, yeah, Gothel was evil. But I really like your alternative timeline of, "What if Gothel had been the royal nursemaid."
