Hawaiian monk seals are endangered and protected under Hawaii state law. Officials ask people to stay behind the roped off areas on the beach for the safety of onlookers and the seals. This mother seal (Rocky) recently gave birth (July 9, 2022) to her pup at Kaimana Beach. NOAA strongly urges swimmers and beachgoers to stay at least 150 feet away from mother seals and their pups.
This area in Waikiki is a common spot for swimmers to do open ocean laps. NOAA released a statement when the pup was born, informing the public that Rocky and her pup were expected to remain in the Kaimana Beach area for 5-7 weeks while the pup nurses.
Hawaiian monk seals are an endangered species, and only about 1,500 are left in the world.
In the second clip shown in this reel, onlookers can be heard yelling for the woman to get out of the water. Witnesses also told KITV that the woman did not sustain any puncture wounds but seemed to have an injury on her arm. Otherwise, we have limited info on the swimmer.
*I put an article about Rocky posted by NOAA fisheries in my stories if you want to learn more about the mama seal. For example, this was her 14th pup, and her second pup born in Waikiki.*
