I don't think she should have been arrested YET. But he should have used the evidence of the recording to give her an ultimatum. SHe WILL be arrested unless she went to the pawn shop under Police escort and got the keys back, with the Police involved I'm certain she'd have to make an arrangeent with the pawn shop to buy back the keys after she got the money back, either from a loan, returning her new phone, whatever it takes. But wow I'm shocked at how the wife poorly handled this all, she's not a good person.

Story 1: NTA. The MIL committed B&E and grand theft. I’m still using a five year old iPhone, and yet I’m not stealing to buy a new one. Update to the first story, op served his wife divorce papers at her job, Yeah now everyone in her office gonna find out why they are getting a divorce. He warned his landlord of his future ex and MIL behavior then MIL’s arrest, he not gonna renew her lease and gonna change the locks. Before you all ask what if his wife tries to empty the joint account of cash, he already got the password change and took his share and using it for his divorce lawyer I’m not sure what the laws on divorce are since depends on place to place. Let’s hope op can leave with without his ex trying to gouge his wallet.

Story 1: OP should have called the Police, and after showing the footage gone with them to the mother and told her straight "I have footage of you stealing my antique keys, here's an offer. Go back to the pawn shop and get the keys back, however you need to. Take out a loan, return your new phone, I don't care. You have 2 days to get them back or I will have you arrested." You'd be giving her a chance to fix her mistake and if she does she wouldn't have to get arrested at being middle aged.

Story #1 - OP if your wife for whatever comes crawling on her hands and knees demanding u take her back say no. Because here's the thing it's one thing to get support from your adaugther and her husband, but it's another to be pampering like the wife is pampering her mother. The fact that she is 53 and threw a fit because u refused to give her a new smartphone because her current one was 2 years old makes me ask 2. One how old is the OP's and two how long has she been pampering her mother. Based on what was described, I would guess easily over 1 year. Also, based on what was described, it seems like your wife expected u to pamper her mother when u 2 got married. So if she's gonna act like that towards marriages that might happen in the future(not to sound mean), but she won't have them long term until something changes.

Am i the jerk For not allowing my grandma in my life? My grandma has a bad backround whit my dad which means we dom't speak a lot. She lives a few houres away from me but my other grandma lives in a other country, she always visites us birthdays,christmas ect.
