It's a silly moment during an emotional scene, but rather than laughing out loud, Homer finds it endearing and smiles with a hint of humour when he raises his hand to his mouth. It's subtle and emotional response to a funny gag, which in turn helps keep the tone of the scene intact.

The way I see it, this episode should have been the ending to the Simpsons. Homer spent his entire childhood believing that parenthood was a mistake. However, Mother Simpsons brought back Mona and Homer realized that even after separated, she never stopped missing him and loving him and with Abe finally standing up defending his wife and son, Homer's journey in embracing parenthood was complete. The one who caused this entire problem was Burns but thanks to the effort of the entire family, Burns suffered loss and allowing Homer to have the chance in seeing victory over the nemesis of the Simpson Family. While the ending felt sad but I interpreted as Homer reflecting on what has transpired. Thanks to all that has happened, Homer has found a new starting point, to be a better man, to be a better son, to be a better husband and to be a better father. With that said, what do you all think about the comment?

It's Mothers Day here in the UK. I watched this scene having completely forgotten how sad it was. I'm feeling broken now, people in the UK are always saying that American sitcoms have no pathos, no emotion, which is absolute bullsmeg because this is easily on par as when Grandad died in Only Fools And Horses. 😭

This really used to be The Simpsons. A truly emotional ending beautifully scored by Alf Clausen. If you didn’t shed a tear watching this I believe you don’t have a soul. One of the best endings to anything ever.

Danny Elfman scored the main theme that plays at the start of each episode, I'm not sure what other music he's contributed to the series, if any. The rest of the music in each episode has been scored by a few different composers throughout the series' run, but the vast majority of it was composed by Alf Clausen who worked on the show from 1990-2017. So Alf Clausen would have been the person responsible for this excellent piece.

A tearful scene. It perfectly shows how lonely Homer was after his mother disappeared

This episode is considered my favourite. It reveals is the identity of Homers mother and where was she entire time. The ending with Homer sitting on his car looking up at the night sky, is enough to pull on your heart strings even more. Just like the ending in Futurama with Fry's dog, this scene can also make you tear up.

Watching this scene as a teen made me sad. But now I am an adult and had to Emigrate from my country away from my family and especially my mom whom I am very close to, so watching this scene again now just makes me cry specially at night when there is nothing much to do and stare at the sky remembering my old days. The Simpsons really nailed this scene

This whole scene represents what Family Guy, South Park and even American Dad could never do. They would always make very stupid and disrespectful jokes in cutaway gags about this while The Simpsons has always been the true deal. Being golden, showing tons of heart and making you love the whole Simpsons family despite some who have insecurities.

I first remember seeing this episode when I was only three years old and this is the only scene I remember I remembered nothing else because I was very little but it almost made me cry and also to this day it still almost makes me cry.

This is so touching, but Maggie’s first word always tears me up. Neither Bart or Lisa could call him Daddy. Homer puts Maggie to bed and says “I hope you never say a word.” She takes out her dummy and says “Daddy.” Then I cry

This simpsons is my favourite show of all time. It has influenced my life and my humour. Each and every character in the show I love and feel like friends to me. Homer is portrayed as the loveable idiot in the family and is my favourite character in television history as he’s one of few characters I can sympathise with and relate to.

LOVE this scene! 1 of the nicest but saddest scenes from all of Simpsons I think, that shot of him sat on his car watching the stars almost makes me tear up. Such a big fan of old Simpsons, had some good laughs from the witty comedy

This is why I love The Simpsons. They are able to take a humorous character and make them relatable. It could have just ended with Homer waving goodbye, but the creators actually took the time to let him sit on the car and reflect. Such an iconic scene

Next to Futurama's ending for "Jurassic Bark", this one always makes me emotional. Such good television. We were so privileged to have a show so radicalizing as the Simpsons.

The first time I fully watched this episode about a year ago. It was one of the most emotional cartoon episodes I've ever seen. If only I saw this back when I was younger. This episode is in my top 10 for sure.
