All respect. Compared to other techies, this man proves that he does a special job. I am a simple subscriber of this channel. The man is fair play. I've been watching this channel for a while and I'm impressed. Succes. I'm from Romania and bravo to the people who are able to provide this information.

The coin battery - this reminded me once I got a laptop that literally had a COIN instead of battery stuck into it. Laptop was dead (water damage), but at least I got 10 cents.

Why is it insane that a "70A P-channel MOSFET just burned trough"?. It burns because of power dissipation. In a short circuit situation the full 12V is dropped across the MOSFET. Even if it conducts only a single Amp that will dissipate 12 Watt in the MOSFET which is orders of magnitude beyond what a D2PAK can handle.

Nice save. I usually strengthen and repair high-performance rails with copper braid. For low power, I prefer to use copper tape. It is easier to cut and takes up less space under the mosfet component. I personally use the thermal camera with an extender, so I can place the tablet in a fixed place and move the camera around. As I do with my endoscope camera.

Need to check that 12v cpu power resistance in the future. The boards VRM is anemic to begin with. Pretty sure a 16 core would be VRM thermal throttled in a stress test.

soo impressive given the state of the trace under the mosfet. real question is was it killed by the cmos battery being fitted upside down?
@MainboardMedic
@MainboardMedic Күн бұрын
Thank you! It defenetly wasnt killed by that! The 3.3V from the battery has no way into the VRM section and also it supply so little current, it would be able to kill a mosfet!

@MainboardMedic thinking bout it probably won't do anything apart not being able to save bios settings giving out negative voltage.

That takes skill. There was this time my father tried adding ram to his computer and he somehow managed to squeeze it in the wrong way without breaking it a true master. FYI It doesn't take long to fry a CPU with no heatsink on it. Do you think the seller even checked it?

The phase probably got hot because you did not put the big aluminium elco back. Much more voltage variance due to that, resulting in much more switching and thus more heat.
@MainboardMedic
@MainboardMedic Күн бұрын
When stress testing, the cap was back in there! Did that just before puting the heatsink back on there!
@larsenmats
@larsenmats Күн бұрын
That phase heating up more than the others may have caused the original fault?
@MainboardMedic
@MainboardMedic Күн бұрын
Might be, but i really cant tell why, with having the passive components checked and replaced the whole phase! So only the PWM controller left if anything!
@rick5078

How am I not surprised it was one of the mosfets not covered by the heatsink that got unhappy?
@MainboardMedic

What temperature are you setting your heat gun to to desolder those SMD components?
@MainboardMedic

For VRM and thicker boards i go around 400C and with smaller passive components i go for around 370-380C!

The owner must have a ATX PS with short circuit protection, ie, you need to unplug it from the wall to reset it.
@MainboardMedic
@MainboardMedic Күн бұрын
As far as i know basicly every standard ATX power supply does that, but my PICO adapter doesnt do that! The server PSU that i use also has a protection, but it doesnt trigger because there is a mosfet in between from the pico adapter! And yet again i will ask, when will you do another "not repairing" motherboards! I really enjoyed watching your videos!
