one of my buddies tried getting me into bitcoin when it was around 80 cents. I was going to buy $1,000 worth for kicks but didn't really understand the concept and when started telling me about planning to buy expensive graphics cards to "mine" them thought it was some kind of scam to sell hardware. My bud bought 8 gpu's but then lost most of his savings in stock market and sold the gpu's before setting them up. Then years later he came up on money and invested 100k when bitcoin prices were going crazy. He was paying 2-3x retail cost for used more electricity efficient GPUs. Rented space in data centers to setup his mining farm. Then bitcoin started crashing and for few months he still did ok mining other cryptos and exchanging for btcs but with so many new coins coming out whole market got diluted and it was too hard to make $. It got to a point where his mining couldn't even cover electricity costs and had to fight to get out of his data center contracts and then sold off all his hardware for big loss as gpu prices collapsed with btc and other cryptos. So sick guy was onto it from the beginning and was so sold on the concept and still ended up losing bunch of money. He could have made 10s of millions of dollars just running his 8 gpus collecting bit coins.

How are people going to call this a bullshit idea when it is clearly functional, solves a long-standing computing problem, and has been growing exponentially in use and progressive advancement for 6 years. Want a real scam? Try digging into how inefficient and inflexible our current transaction and financial systems are. How centralization has given huge institutions free reign to essentially gamble with people's money, and then get a nice bailout when they ultimately and inevitably fuck up.

Thanks, 400 antminers will most definately turn a profit as they are Application specific devices, meaning they are for mining crypto-currencies ONLY. Bitcoin mining is not very profitable anymore, and you need specific machines for it. You can mine ETH on a normal computer all you need is a decent GPU, then you can convert that into BTC, that is the best way to mine right now, but it's not clear how long that will last so it is a risk.

many people have a hard time understanding bitcoin. I believe it is because people think that money must be created by central banks or governments, but bitcoin shows this is false. It is possible to have money without banks or government.

These computers all over the world do an insane amount of calculations which secure the bitcoin network (10^18 calculations per SECOND). About every 10 minutes, a miner is awarded new bitcoins (currently 12.5 bitcoins) by the network for contributing to the security of the bitcoin network. But normal everyday users of the bitcoin network do not need to worry about doing any mining.

well that depends , the rate to "find" a bit coin is constantly getting harder, meaning they need to mine slower or get new hardware , hardware is like 2k usd per unit + powersuplys , i was lookin in to settin up mining , but the current rate of mining is to slow for the best hardware to pay of in any amount of time when taking in to acount power cost as well.
