She can know exactly what she wants at 23/24 by getting married and having a child, but a 25 year old not wanting kids is "too young to know what they want". It's beyond hypocritical. Women's life plans are generally only seen as valid if they involve marriage and children. If it doesn't, then the mentality is always "they will change their minds, they are too young to truly know what they want". Which is ridiculous.

She's obviously trying her best to be supportive of her daughter, despite having a different perspective and working with a cultural divide. As a daughter of a more traditional Korean mother, that earns my respect. I grew up hearing the typical "you need to get married and have kids to support you in your old age" shpiel, but I always knew that my mom would love and respect me even if I didn't.

YES......I am a first child to my family and after having me they blamed and hated me for the things they couldn't accomplish. I was emotionally hurt and still struggle with the blaming myself for the state my mom end up with and severe mental illness. No kid is an experiment. I am doing well in my education and want to adopt kids in the future with my best friend. We live together and aren't interested in any type of relationship. I hope all things work out and we raise our kids free of emotional baggage

People always suggest adoption like it is the easiest thing to do. It really isn't. Whilst I 100% encourage people to adopt if they wish to, I do not want to delude people that it's an easy decision to make. Having a child at all is not an easy decision to make, for various reasons. I'm just tired of hearing people adopt thinking it will be easy, and then returning that child. So heartbreaking.

I love how the Asian mom was able to reflect and hear that her daughter said she has put pressure on her daughter and she apologized for it and said in the future she is an open book and will be there for questions or to just hear her out and support what she wants. Having children is the BIGGEST commitment you will ever make! Children affect your health, happiness, finances, freedom, your dreams, every aspect of your life. I find it shocking we collectively have this enormous pressure to fit the "ideal mother" stereotype. I'm so encouraged that women and girls are pushing back on this narrative. I remember once when I was around 8 or 9 years old, I used to take arabic class with one of my mom's friends. After the class, they were gossiping (like all people do lol) about their friends' daughter. She was in medical school, a really smart woman, very accomplished, yet the only thing my mother and my teacher were talking about was the fact that she was 30 and wasn't married. Not that she was an amazing person, had a kind demeanor, was almost out of medical school. It was that it was such a shame that she was too old to get married. I remember thinking that sounded so weird, and even at such a young age, that was implanted into my head. I still remember it 5-6 years later and it kind of still annoys me that people think that way. I'm not saying it's wrong to get married, I'm saying it's wrong to define a person based on their marriage status or something like that. Update on the woman though, she graduated medical school with high honors, has a great job, isn't married, and is living an amazing life :D

That actually is interesting to me. I know a lot a lot of mothers parents fathers and children in the midwest where I live, at the age of 18 you need to be out of the house independent and on your own. It's a blessing that I'm still allowed to be in this house that I'm in. My mom could have kicked me out a long time ago would she is legally able to do yes, because I am over 18 and an adult legally. That's a scary realization that I had learned when I found out that legally, she did not have to take care of me anymore. So that took some gustel out of me and the things that I wanted to be.

I don't think she meant it quite like that. I mean obviously she raised 5 children, made some huge sacrifices for them, and apparently did a great job from the looks of her daughter in this video and the other one she discussed a little bit. I don't think she's minimizing the level of commitment it takes for a woman to be a mother. I think she's saying childbirth and motherhood is one of the heights of the female experience. Which it is if that's what a person wants. To be able to make that sacrifice of your time, your body, your priorities, the amount of love a mother has for her children is one that I don't think can be eclipsed by any other human connection. She wants that for her daughter. My mother wants that for me. And it can be hard for them to understand this generation of women who have more options and more freedom to say no to motherhood.

My mom had her tubes tied. She never wanted a child of her own. She was a foster parent. I was a foster child who came into her care and she fell in love with me and adopted me. If she had not gotten her tubes tied, she would have never been my mom. I'm so grateful to have had her for my mother. Goes to show that if you get your tubes tied, but later want children there are other options than giving birth. EDIT: Thank you everyone for your kind words! My mother was a fantastic woman with a lot of heart and humor. She's no longer with us, but she taught me a lot about what it means to be strong, selfless, and true to yourself.

I think it is because tubal ligation contrary to a vasectomy for men is pretty much irreversible for one. You can always change your mind about sky diving, but not about carrying your own child after that procedure. I can imagine that a lot of mother’s (especially those who felt so called to this purpose in a way) who gave birth themselves had quite the profound experience through this rite of passage and being the carrier and channel of that life that probably only they can truly understand. And then if you have that experience that was mind shifting maybe in so many ways it can make someone sad it will no longer be possible for some else in that way. And also sometimes it happens that for a moment the me/ you separation isn’t felt strongly and somebody else’s decision can make it feel like it affects your own. That’s my thoughts anyway.

I love my mum, but when it comes to gender and "womanly roles and traditions" I fall apart from her. Exactly what I was thinking. A child isn't an "experience " it's a human being and if you want to have a child you should be sure about it and really want it because as you said the worst childhoods came from the ones that weren't truly wanted. Not everyone is suited to be a parent. Also because you give birth to a child or you helped in the process of that child that doesn't automatically make you a parent. A parent is the one that doesn't just give birth or raises a child , it's the one that cares about the child's wellbeing and happiness, it's the one that loves and supports the child in whatever happens. I truly believe that not anyone can be called a parent and if you want to be called a parent you need to act like one not just say you are one(and that cames from personal experiences).

@@d.k.219 I agree because I was one of those children who neither parent wanted, but they had me and got married because of the pressures of my grandparents even though neither were suited for either parenthood or marraige. I won't go into details, but growing up was a truly horrible expiriance, and it is awful that children are seen as objects that everyone is required to have rather than an actual living being that deserves better than to grow up being neglected and told that they are a burden and a mistake. Most people may want children, or be pressured to have them, but NO ONE should have a child if they aren't prepared to give it the life it deserves. Or at least one that doesn't suck.

I don't believe she meant it that way, I saw it as more of like these women should be somewhat willing to experience the truly empowering time of carrying a child. Why else would so many women get emotional once their bump appears? It is a beautiful experience. I'm sure she didn't mean they should have a child just to have it, clearly she would want them to be ready for them, both financially and emotionally (If at all!) She's encouraging her own beliefs and likely is projecting and reflecting the moments she felt during her own pregnancy. 🥺

White Sky i agree with some of what your saying, back in my high school years there was a class were they teach you the basis of taking care of a baby and let you take a robot baby to experience parenthood.. sadly that class was removed for whatever reason. And yes some who don’t expect to have a child can learn form experience that way or ask for any relative who has kids for advice and I totally agree with that. But even then there are people who don’t change, like abusive or strict parents. There are crime cases of parents killing there own children. Some parents just give up parenting their own child I believe that some people can become good parents, but not all will be the perfect parent material

She shipped us off somewhere she *"thought"* was better for us, because, she went there when she was 14 (my age now)... But those years sucked so bad. And the one chance she got to get us back, she didn't. She blamed the people who SAVED my sister & I. ha! She isn't in our lives anymore, because she couldn't own up to her own faults. It's sad that I can't have my mother in my life because of the things she did. And she will not blame them for taking us into their lives... they didn't have to but they did.

I have known my whole life I want to have kids. I want to get pregnant and have them biologically, but because of health issues that might not be possible. I actually think I'd be fine never getting married, but even if I don't I want kids. In a marriage, using a donor, or adopting, I want kids. And no one in my entire life has ever asked, "Well, but are you sure?" Why is it that me being sure I want kids doesn't get questioned, but others being sure they don't want kids is constantly questioned. I've never been told, "Yeah, but what do you know at 19?" but people who don't want kids get told that all the time. It's just ridiculous.

It depends on if you come from a religious or a secularist point of view. From religion, it's fulfilling and one of the purest forms of love and is a calling. From a secularist point of view, species exist to reproduce. It's unnatural for organisms to desire to not reproduce. Not saying that everyone should become a parent, but those are the basic arguments for parenthood.

I’m sorry, I’m not trying to invalidate your experience because it is true that a lot of women get pressured into having kids. But it is also absolutely the case that a lot of women get pressured into a lifestyle that _discourages_ them from having kids as well, as the lady at 6:14 demonstrates. I also know that whenever I talk to my mom about wanting kids, she also questions me on that (you don’t have a career, do you know what that will that do to your body, just wait until you’re 30 etc), and I know it’s not because she’s malicious but because she wants what she thinks is best for me. We get questioned no matter what choice we make honestly, but I don’t think it’s fair to paint it as if the pressure is only one way, when a lot of women, myself included, have felt pressure in the opposite direction too.

I think it's really smart that today's generation only has children if they are ready for it and really want it. Previous generations were pressured into it, even those who didn't actually want to start a family, that's why there are so many broken families. We might make less babies, but hopefully it'll result in a happier, better future for our children, because we make conscious decisions, not just do it because we have to.

I just hope that people from other countries move in here, cos otherwise there are too many people on the earth. But there are talks that our goverment tries to support people to make more babies. One of the biggest issues my mother and I had when I came out as a lesbian was that I would never carry her grandchildren. I was so upset, hurt and confused. I guess I understand where she's coming from as it's probably been one of her dreams for me, and I respect that, but it weighs so heavily on my shoulders. Even after 6 years of me being out (she's very accepting now and she's my number 1 supporter) I can't help feel extremely guilty for not following the life she wanted for me. This episode really helped me realize that I'm not alone, straight or not.

Being able to see that men can be sensitive and caregivers just as much as women, and that women can be leaders in the workplace and provide most of the financial support for her family was really important for me to learn. Obviously these traits don't apply solely to stay-at-home dads or working moms (housewives can also be strong women and working dads can also be caring/giving) but this was how i saw them manifest in my own parents.

Me too my mom is the one who has the most stable income and my father has raised us as a stay home dad for 5 years and every other day each parent handles the cooking, and does an equal amount of chores no matter if my dad is working or not. It truly is unique to be raised this way because I know how strong I am.

I do not think that the housewife in the pink shirt should be ashamed about her family dynamics. Every family is different and if that works for her and makes her happy, then that is totally fine. She sounded ashamed that she lets him take care of all the financial stuff but if that's something she's not great at, its okay to leave that to him. Taking care of the home and doing chores etc is also a very difficult task. Feminism is not only about women being incharge but being happy and comfortable in the roles they want to play be it breadwinner or housewife. she does not seem like she feels oppressed by it so there's nothing to be ashamed off.

Nowadays, there is such a stigma about being a SAHM. I am one, and our family functions very much like hers with a few exceptions. My husband takes care of all the financial stuff. I feel shame sometimes because of that. Not that I'm not capable, but that I'm viewed as less because I'm ok with him. I feel there is also a stigma (in some circles) of moms who go to work instead of staying home, too. We are all different and have different needs.

Though I do not agree with having kids and marriage being serious life decision, I do think that if one decides to have these they should be sure and ready for these. I think marriage, since divorce is so common, is just a type of living condition a person chose to live in, I dont think it should be a "serious life decision" because it sounds as if after divorce one cannot get marry again, no judgement btw this is just my opinion. And having kids is rather a responsibility one chose to carry, which is why I think if a person decides to have kids they should be ready and really sure about it because regretting it would be too late by the time, like considering capability of carrying a kid, finance, patience, etc.
