Konosuba uses it extreemly well though. the animation honestly is way better for it. It wouldn't work in something like aldnoah zero or fate stay night, but it does work in comedy anime when used appropriately, as konosuba does.

Love Konosuba and this OP. But as an animator, this new trend in accusing shows of bad animation just because of screenshots taken of motion is infuriating. People purposefully take these screenshots because the squash, stretch, and exaggeration in animation in motion looks awkward when taken out of context, but that's the entire point. You put all of these awkward frames together to make something look nice and to make the motion look exaggerated instead of stiff and robotic. A good example is Overwatch's animations. If you screencap the different frames, the characters are completely stretched out and it looks ridiculous, but when you watch the full animation, it looks fantastic. Unfortunately, the internet only likes to react and freak out rather than put thought into anything.

Mitchellsockzzz Although not as good as the previous 3 parts, JoJo part 4 still had great animation and still held that Araki art style WHEN it was at its best. It can't be denied that a few scenes were sloppy (think KQ reveal). But to be fair, a lot of these were short scenes or transition shots and weren't even the main focus of said scene. Basically, DiU did have a few off scenes, but they would've been noticed if they hadn't been blown out of proportion.

Thanks for discussing what good animation is. As someone studying animation, it greatly annoys me when I hear people who know nothing about the subject discussing it. Animation is about bringing characters to life through movement. You can't tell that through a screenshot! That's like judging an actor's performance through a picture from their film. Agreed. I'm not an animator and I'm kind of dense when it comes to art, but it's clear as the blue sky to me that Konosuba has great animation and that the goofy looks are used to breathe life into it. When I think about how many people don't get that, it's not that they are _wrong_, it's that they don't perceive it as such. Can you imagine looking at such a lively piece of animation and thinking _"this looks bad because the faces look weird when I pause the screen"?_ How dull does one have to be for that to happen? It's the same reason with British VA vs. American VA (usually, not always of course), where British VA make the whole thing more energetic, with western chart music vs. less known artists, video games in which graphics are everything and game design suffers. There are just too many people who don't get the more subtle details; and I'm not even saying this as if Konosuba was some sort of unknown or underrated anime.

but why would you want super serious animation for a comedy? Konosuba only uses high quality animation if they need to make something epic like the Dullahan fight or when Kazuma is hunting those lizards. The only other time they use it is to exaggerate like giving him such smooth creepy hand animations when he threatens to steal a girl's panties. It's the same people who hate on Kill La Kill's animation when it might look cheap but the studio just went about animating the most creative way possible, not the most expensive way. You call it lazy, I call it super creative and fun, not everything has to be a sakuga moment.

With this and The Canipa Effect's recent video, it's so nice to finally see some people actually giving Konosuba's animation the praise it deserves. Anime fans are so shallow when it comes to appreciating animation. To them, stiff images that look really pretty in static screenshots equates to a show having great animation, rather than just good composition and character designs. But creating compelling designs is far more complex and versatile than simply obsessing over what looks good in a single frame. The actual movements and their points of exaggeration are equally important to their identity and appeal. Great job on the analysis as always!

Love how it turned the classic archetypes on their heads. Kazuma: The paragon superhero with a strict moral code turned into an average guy whose goals are completely selfish and only goes out of his way in the hopes of sexual relations with his party members, and uses gender equality to get women to do work for him. Aqua: Pure and selfless Goddess that grants fortune to the heroes turned into a completely vain and materialistic woman who only wants to be eternally praised and worshipped and grants misfortune onto the hero in the form of ever-increasing debt of her party-girl lifestyle. Megumin: The all-powerful mage character with all the knowledge turned into someone who lets fights drag on and her teammates killed just so she can pull off the "Play of the Match". Darkness: Noble knight that takes her duty of protecting people it turns her into a masochist who'd rather suffer the pain of being attacked over helping her party.

Orlo Strunk read the novel, as a big fan of the series(thou I've only read the official English realeases) the manga felt more like an anime trying to be an anime. While what makes the novel and anime good is that there not carbon copies. Each take advantage of there medium, instead of being restricted by it. The story gets told pretty differently but in a way that make both very unique and hilarious in different ways. While the manga is very basic in it story telling. To be more specific parts that I laughed my ass off in the anime, hardy made me smile in the novel, but instead turn other not as funny scenes much more hilarious because the novel can add more info and detail, while the anime can take advantage of music, voice acting, and animation. And leaves the manga which just tries to do the exact same comedy as the anime which is just unfortunate considering it doesn't have the same tools to work with

Did you seriously forgot to talk about how those running on an empty field was a parody, or even a mockery of those other anime with OPs where characters are running int he field for no reason, and that sky driving scene with no parachute, that's suppose to make fun of all anime where every anime OPs have characters that are in that situation and are smiling or acting pretty nonchalant about it, and Konosuba just make it the reverse and literally make those guys freak the fuck out than the typical scene on the OP of anime character sky driving and reacting like it's not much of a thing to worry about.

Awesome video! I'm glad you stood up for KonoSuba's animation. I won't pretend to understand a lot about animation, but I never understood the hatred for KonoSuba's; I figured it was supposed to be the way it was to be funny. Yea as someone who's gotten into animation a bit anyone who thinks the animation is bad have zero idea what they're talking about. People just get upset when things go off model even if it's intentional, because clearly if it's not pretty and on model it's bad to them. It doesn't even look bad, it looks funny and expressive. Any gripes people have are genuine nitpicks. If you look enough you can find some meh looking shots in pretty much any anime. KonoSuba has some of the most expressive and wonderful animation I've seen and I adore it for that. I've just learned a lot of anime fans really don't understand animation. As they trash anything that goes off model.

I love your analysis and I absolutely agree. I love that the op tells a story, and I love the music too. I think the coolest thing about it is that characters are animated on altering frames to give the animation a more life-like appearance. Maybe everyone else already knew that but as an anime casual it's fascinating that they do that in order to make it seem like the characters are always moving.

something you didn't point out that I think deserves mention. Kazuma is shown multiple times 'speaking' in the later half of the episode. Obviously there is no voice, but you can easily tell what he would be saying. when they first see the turtle he's saying something like "what the heck is that/how are we suppose to get up there" when they're free falling he signals Megumin to use her magic whilst screaming

Konosuba is one of the best anime of all time. Throughout the entire show the characters personalities are very clear. The animation(especially the magic effects) are the best that I've seen and the story is interesting and fun. The show works perfectly in the way that the characters don't act how you'd expect, megumin for example is the youngest on and yet she seems to know what she wants to do and tends to be very mature and knows her limitations well. Kazuma in any other anime would be the one getting exited that the world so closely reflects an MMO game but they made him the one who's hard working and realistic in the way he handles situations(for example not having enough money). Aqua is a powerful goddess so you'd expect her to be wise and calm but she's actually a bumbling idiot who constantly breaks down and seems to have an alcohol problem. Darkness is a loyal knight but she's constantly fantasising about losing and she struggles to actual hit anything. These contradictions to what we expect make these characters feel fresh and at times more realistic and believable. The voice acting is something I find hard to judge as it's in japanese but from what I can tell the voice acting reflects the characters emotions and situation very well and at no point does it feel that they're lacking in any way. Lastly there is nothing better than the humour seen in konosuba, they consistantly make it hilarious and never overuse any jokes, a good example is how kazuma is very good at collecting panties with his steal ability. No matter what happens the show is consistant and one of the best. It's honestly hard to find flaws with the show! :P
