The Tarou(太郎) is just something added to boys’ names, it literally means “first born son”. So his name means “Loving Loverboy”

There’s a quick gag in episode 2 when Karane gets distracted by cat. She thinks to herself “there’s a kitty here” as she grows cat ears and a tail for like two seconds. And then everything goes back to normal and it’s never addressed. It’s probably the single most relatable scene in anime I’ve ever seen. It spoke to me on a spiritual level. Just seeing random animal and how for a brief second that animal is basically your entire world. Forget everything else, guys. There’s a cat here. Holy shit.

I think it's incredibly impressive how 100 gf can do literally whatever it wants. Somehow it has created an aura of utter absurdity built atop a warm beating heart, and that allows it get away with literally anything. One chapter is a cute slice of life chapter with the various girls, the next is a genuinely touching dramatic chapter about one of the girl's struggles or growth, the next is an utterly baffling absurdist humor chapter that treats the fourth wall like it basically doesn't exist. No matter what story it is, if it's the 100 gf telling it, then I believe it and am invested. Basically, its somehow become the Deadpool of harem anime.

There's a part of the manga I got to recently, where a recent girlfriend addition, Momoha who's like 'deadbeat drunk homeless ethics teacher' (basically Hiroi from Bocchi the Rock) gets to have a moment between Nano (girl who cares only about Efficiency) and Meido (girl whose whole existence is pleasing others), where she helps the two of them work out a situation where Nano had a handmade schedule to visit every single lightshow in a festival as quickly and effectively as possible, and Meido didn't want to speak up over something another girl felt so passionately about-- Momoha convinces them to take five minutes and think about Why they want what they want, and Nano admits that she was optimizing around 'the most loving memories she could make in one date', and Meido didn't want to get in the way of someone else's happiness, and eventually, Nano realizes that the love in the memories you make is shared between everyone involved and she needs to be considerate of others without getting ahead of herself like this, and Meido recognizes that sometimes the most happiness people can share is when they give a little feedback to each other and find the midpoint of both their respective kinds of happiness. All of this comes out of three characters who had never interacted up to that point, one of whom is brand new and was literally introduced by showing her living in a tent behind the school daydrinking and offering sex to a high school student if he felt up for a quick bang (her words not mine). This is the chapter that comes immediately after the single most contrived joke in the series, where the editor of the manga himself shows up in everyone's dream and tells them 'no, you can't all get drunk, even as a joke, even while playing pretend, you are mostly minors and that is illegal', and Rentaro spends genuinely an entire chapter explaining his insane-as-fuck plan to make everyone look and act as if they were drunk, by giving everyone drinks optimized to induce hiccups, changing the temperature of the room with enough precision that everyone's faces are flush and a bit sweaty, and making them do tongue twisters until they start slurring their words, all as an excuse to show off how all the girlfriends up to that point would act if they were drunk, while the entire time every single panel as a 'No alcohol or mind-altering substances are being used in the making of this feature' disclaimer appears in the corner of literally every single fucking panel as a measure against anyone who might flip to a random page in the volume and get concerned about a depiction of drunk minors. I mean this with all the love in my heart, Hyakkano is fucking deranged and I love it to death.

Between a lovable protagonist you want to love and SEE loved and a massive cast of characters you want to see hanging out together (and in some cases more than that!), this series has what makes a perfect entry in the genre nailed. When your harem could unironically have a shipping ranking of JUST different combinations of the girls, yet simultaneously is one where you are happy to see all of them getting time with the leading lad, you know you’re doing a harem right. As a believer from the moment the very first chapter dropped I am so happy to see people continuing to love this series. It’s such a genuine gem.

I adore so many of the pairings of the girls in the manga. Hakari and Karane keep on giving, of course, but I love that Nano becomes increasingly affectionate (in her own way) towards Shizuka. Karane and Ahko, Iku and Rin as alluded to in the video, Naddy and Chiyo, and Hahari and Kishika are all great too. Seriously, read the manga.

I’m convinced Cid is an ace king. I think that part of the comedy of his obsessive Tuxedo-Masking is that he’s actually unconsciously missing that element of being a romantic figure with a bit of danger. Obviously the Shades and all the Numbers are way into him, but when he shows up he’s always inspiring fear or awe in the principle female cast, without that “he’s so dark and mysterious and sexy” bit.

100 girlfriends has been my personality for the past... three years or so. I've been working on scripts for youtube videos that I want to make talking about each of their characters. I have so many thoughts about every single one of them (all 31, as of writing this comment). About the structure of the manga, about the writing decisions, poor and great, sus and wholesome. Nothing has made me happier than seeing the overwhelmingly positive reception to this thing that I hold so close to my heart. Lowkey the part of the manga that season 2 will be adapting (volumes 4-6) is my least favorite part of the manga. The ideas were good, but a lot of the execution just wasn't there. I really hope that season 2 of the anime manages to execute more effectively on the manga's ideas and give them the weight they deserved. You'll excuse me if I'm a bit scared though. I really hope this adaptation of my least favorite part of the manga are received well by the community. A lot of people who've read the manga claim that it gets bad after volume 3, when in reality I'd say volumes 4-6 just have the highest amount of stinker chapters condensed into three volumes of manga. Volumes 7 onwards are still incredibly charming, though unfortunately not as intricate as volumes 1-3 were. That's what happens when your cast of fleshed-out characters is expanding into the dozens, you just can't upkeep the same narrative structure volumes 1-3 had. Well I mean you could, but then other characters would be pushed out of the spotlight, and that goes against the mission statement of the manga as a whole. All in all, that was a long-winded way of saying. I love this manga, and I hope that if season 2 ends up being disappointing, it won't discourage people from coming to check out the manga.

ALSO SOMETHING I THINK ABOUT A LOT Rentarou's love for his girlfriends canonically surpasses god powers. There was like a time god or like a god of festivals or something in one chapter, and one of the girlfriends who really loves festivals wished for the festival to last forever. One obvious monkey's paw later and she's stuck in a time loop. She asks for the time loop to end and the god reveals that he's siphoning power from the people trapped in the time loop, so he doesn't want to end it. During this entire conversation time is stopped. AND THEN RENTAROU COMES AROUND THE FUCKING CORNER AND STARTS THREATENING A FUCKING DEITY WITH PUTTING HIM SIX FEET UNDER THE GROUND. I love this manga so much it's so goofy and silly and so, so wholesome it's the best.

YES YOU SAID SO MUCH THAT I AGREE WITH. 100 girlfriends, paradoxically, is a shoujo anime. You'd assume from the tin (and from the first six volumes) that we were leaning more towards a shounen audience, but as we've gotten an increasingly large and strong female cast the stories have gotten less male gaze-y and more about these girls' relationships with one another. Even the chapters that focus on Rentarou and one of the girlfriends are often wholesome and rarely have any fanservice. There are specific examples and chapters that come to mind. Karane and Hakari's relationship with one other helps elevate both characters beyond what they could do on their own. You constantly see them bickering and feuding with one another. Calling the other names and getting into shouting matches. But then in another chapter you'll see them showing each other memes, or talking on the phone, and it becomes clear that these are two characters who love each other despite all of the fighting that they do. You get the impression that when the metaphorical cameras are off, and the comedic aspects of their characters aren't being called to the forefront, these two are best friends (or maybe lovers 😳) who don't harbor any real ill will for the other. There's a chapter where Ahko (Goofy Gyaru, easy S-tier character) helps out Suu (Number Fetishist who doesn't care about anything else) because she has a lot of trouble in social interactions. I love this pairing so much because it shows off Ahko's social awareness. She gives off the impression that she doesn't have much emotional intelligence, due to her face constantly being in a goofy grin, but the amount of maturity she shows in helping Suu navigate what is, to her, an impossible task of remembering people's names. I mean how is she supposed to remember anything that doesn't relate to numbers?? Why would that interest her?? I really didn't like Suu before this chapter. I thought her gag got really tired fast and didn't see much past the central joke that she was a weirdo who only cared about numbers, but this chapter with Ahko opened my eyes and let me see the person that Suu really was. She was autistic. Or well, that's my headcanon at least. It made me relate to Suu's struggles so much more, and she became one of my favorite characters afterwards. Instead of seeing this brash weirdo, I saw a brash weirdo surrounded by people she wanted to get to know better, and who is constantly doing her best. These characters interact one another and bring out aspects of each others' personalities that add to the emotional core of the manga as well as the comedy, and that's why I love it so much. The idea that any new addition could be the X-factor that sets off all these unexpectedly wonderful chain reactions.

What really astounds me about this manga is how the author is able to keep it so fresh by continually establishing new groupings for girls that no one would expect and making a banger chapter out of it. It makes it uniquely rewarding to keep reading because when a new girlfriend is introduced, they're not just some side character who only shows up once in a while, they're part of the main cast. Additionally, the fact that despite mainly being a comedy, the series has great continuity and rarely reverts back to the status quo after a chapter helps make all these interactions between the cast even more significant. Despite being the 3rd girlfriend, Shizuka still gets development and the relationship she has with Meru simply couldn't be done with any other character. The most recent girlfriend, Nemu, gets development and establishes a connection with the same time as the first two girlfriends, Hakari and Karane. Truly, no one feels left out, it's insane.

I'd like to thank 100 Girlfriends for being peak especially because it helped me realize what makes or breaks a harem anime: the relationships. These kinds of anime's live and die by the characters and their interactions with each other. And the bad ones fail in making you not buy into the relationships and comradery the characters are supposed to have with each other. This is what separates your Tenchi Muyo's from your Love Hina's. Your Highschool DxD's from your Rent-A-Girlfriend's.

That's true even for non-harem romance stories with more than two central characters. Most love triangles would be improved if the two legs had a relationship beyond "rivalry over the hypotenuse," and the exceptions already _have_ such a relationship.

Watching 100 Girlfriends has made me realize something important about harem anime as a whole; Harem anime are actually sports anime in disguise. Think about it, with sports anime, you are given different players or teams to root for, and the show does its best to make you hope that your favorite player comes out on top. Harem anime traditionally does exactly this, but with waifus instead of sports players. However, with the 100 Girlfriends, that rug got pulled out when a stable and committed polycule was introduced right off the bat. It made me realize that all prior harem anime was no different that competative sports when the very competition was undermined by cooperation and synergy.

You would not expect it but they actually both give surprisingly good representation to the non-monogamy community. 100 Girlfriend is more on the idealist fantasy side but we deserve that too as much as perfect monogamous romance stories. Rentaro is the reincarnation of King Solomon, who had over 800 wives and concubines. King Solomon, famed for his wisdom, would not have been able to maintain 800 wives without being extremely wise. Likewise, Rentaro literally forced himself to be smart enough to solve climate change because of he didn't it threatened to end the world which all of his girlfriends live in. Rentaro has to be hard working, dedicated, loving, wise, and attentive enough to keep all his girlfriends happy. And every chapter of the manga or episode of the anime he does that in ways that are always clever and usually pretty darn funny. It's brilliant. If Kaguya-sama Love is War is the highest IQ romcom ever written, then that makes 100 Gf's possibly the highest IQ trash harem ever written.

one thing this leaves out is the manga does a lot to build out the relationships with each of the girls, there are often entire arch's of 2/4 chapters just around the "Rentarou Family" and how they get along together without him around and those really help flesh out the series overall

Those chapters prove this series basically Smash kicks the Bechdel Test off into the distance time and again.

I remember in the early chapters, people were expecting "Anonymous Friend A" from chapter 1 to be a reverse-trap that would get added to the harem. It seems like that character has completely disappeared, but it would be fitting for the first character (not counting the girl that rejects him) Rentarou spoke with to be the very last, secret GF.

What I really find interesting about this series is, like you said, it gives a lot of the girls time with each other which makes a lot of relationships within the Rentarou Family blossom (hell, there's a joke in the community that one of the later girls, Ahko, has a harem within the harem itself because of how many of the other girls she forms a bond with). So much so that lately the manga has focused so much on the girls that Rentarou barely shows up anymore... which should've been a win for most harem fans right? Except most of the fanbase sorely misses when he showed up every chapter, which is telling how much of a great MC he his that a lot of people want to see more of him. Which is great that they started doing a type of chapter lately called "Rentarou's daily life with his girlfriends" which comprises of a few small stories of Rentarou together with a single girlfriend which helps a lot since lately it felt like his relationship with a few of the later GFs are a tad underdeveloped. tl;dr Rentarou is great and everyone loves him. 100kano is goated.

100Gfs is really well written and fun for such an insane premise, and one of the best, if not the best of the harem genre. There are no losers in this harem in the sense that every girl gets to be with the MC (no competition) and the MC himself is also not a cringy loser type person, and you can see his sheer commitment with how he genuinely cares for every single girl, and knows what to do and say to make them as happy as possible. That plot twist and the sprinkle of 4th wall breaks are freakin hilarious as you really dont see it coming at all. The subs and jokes are also on another level with references that really suit western audiences. Many people seem to be turned off by the title alone for how ridiculous and de-gen it sounds, but they're missing out on such a gem. The manga I heard also takes its sweet time as more characters enter the show. The anime can literally can go on for a decade before reaching all 100, which I genuinely hope it does for how entertaining it is, lol.

I watched and liked just a couple of harems, so I'm not an expert, but on my little knowledge about I think that the main difference between 100 gf and the rest is that the author and artist managed to make 30+ characters likeable and unique. Not a single one is a cardboard copy. Some characters may have overlapping characteristics but each one is still unique, so that makes it fresh. That and the fact that Rentarou is not denser than a black hole, the guy is set on making each one happy so he doesn't loose time, he goes straight to the point. And for him they are not just excuses to be with someone, he wants to help them be the best version of themselves first and foremost, and for them to be happy

The 2 best things about 100 girlfriends other than the fact its legit funny, fanservice is top quality, and also Yuri... 1. As I, you, and many others have said is seeing the girls interact with eachother. As a person who was in a poly relationship before, if the girls like eachother its so much better and getting to see that fullfills something in me. 2. Rentarou is such a good guy its ridiculous. Im straight, and honestly I dont even know fully if id say no to dating him because he treats the girls so well, helps them get through their baggage without ever making them feel guilty, and shows that he is 100% capable of loving them with all his heart. Theres a lot of best girls, but Rentarou is truly best boy.

Fleshing out a select few characters for a story is relatively easy. The more characters you add, though, the harder it gets. Akamatsu giving all of 3-A their own time was already impressive. Then you add background information for pretty much all the supporting characters as well, including those you only see in flashbacks. That we know _100GFs_ is not only going for the full 100, it has set out to treat each one equally, is also extremely impressive.

SPOILERS... Later on in the manga, Rentarou was reflecting back on his life and adventures with his girlfriends and talking to god, and I love how even though the whole soulmate magic system in the series is a bit silly, Rentarou, the chad that he is takes it so seriously, because essentially his life, and more importantly the lives of a hundred women he meets are in his hands, however, he doesn't want to reveal the whole soulmate mix-up thing so that the girls wouldn't be coerced or feel that they are forced to be in a relationship with him. He just tries his best to be genuine, and so far it works every time. Even though he is grateful for his life now, he would rather not have this 100 soulmate thing in the first place and is really angry with god because he doesn't want the lives of these women, whose fates were now upturned by a fuck-up on the celestial scale, be in danger or robbed them of a potential, possibly bright future that has now been erased by a coincidental meeting with him. Point is, this series has a lot of heart and genuine moments of maturity, mix in with the silly and horny, and that's why I consider Rentarou to be one of, if not the most lovable protagonist, and this series being one of the best romance comedies, and not just within the harem subgenre.

(I apologize if you did mention it at some point but around the halfway point you started talking mostly about 100 Girlfriends specifically so I assumed you were done exploring other examples and I just couldn't wait. Also I stopped halfway because I intend to watch this at some point and don't want to spoil tooooo much). It might not count as a harem on a technicality because the Girls forget about the MC the moment they fall in love, so the MC doesn't "accumulate" relationships into an actual harem. They return to becoming perfect strangers. But they all truly fall in love with him.

Apt timing, as yesterday I wrote a little essay on why i love 100GF. And it is that Rentarou, and the series, and the author, and the artist. They love women. They adore them. They give each female character a depth, a history, a lifetime of experience with their oddity. And Rentarou loves them, anyways, no matter what, and so will you, the reader. And because of that the girls appreciate and care for each other, which is *sadly really rare* in media. And it begins with him. Rentarou is just the vehicle for the endless infinite love for womanity. And each gf asks a question of 'would you love if': "Would you love me if it made you look bad?", "Would you love me if i expressed love with difficulty or in unhealthy ways?", "Would you love me if i didn't love me?" And Rentarou will always say yes.

For another series which scratches the 100 Girlfriends itch, I recommend Osananajimi wo Erabenai! (I Can't Choose A Childhood Friend!) It has a similar premise - protagonist Yuu Suzukaze can do nothing but think of his childhood friend Karin Machihashi, as he had a massive crush on her before she had to move away. He wanted nothing but to reunite with her, making a wish on his lucky charm to do so... which evidently worked, as multiple Karins join his school. He quickly realizes that all of them are based on facets of the original Karin and decides to make all of them happy. It's definitely cut from the same cloth as 100GFs, at least.
